Description: (( This ride is 8 miles of singletrack followed by 2 miles of jeep rode followed by .6 mile of singletrack)) The 1st climb ENDS 2.5 miles and 1,943 feet of climbing elevation later at the junction to FOREST HOLLOW trail.. Go LEFT.. Now ride another 5 miles on (usually) very narrow roller-coaster beautiful singletrack..
At 7.5 mile total-mile mark you will angle RIGHT onto BEAR CREEK Trail..MORE climbing ( 380' in .6 mile) to junction of jeep road.. Go LEFT..MORE climbing (280' in .3 mile) to the cattle guard (@ 8.4 total trip miles).. Jeep road ups and downs for 1 mile ( total climbing 400').. This now puts you at the TOP of what I call the luge track portion of the jeep road.. This section DECSENDS 360' in .6 mile.. as you roll out of the luge track the road curves around to the LEFT..
At the end of this jeep road you will come to a small clearing on your left with a campsite (firepit).. Look DOWN the hill to your RIGHT.. You will see the HUBBARD CAVE trail-crossing at the stream (Deadmans' Creek)..
I rode this trail 2 times last summer (2002).. The first trip there were 6 or 7 fallen trees across the trail so I stashed my bike and hiked the .6 mile to the first cave.. On the 2nd ride the trees had all been cleared and I was able to ride to within 20 feet of the 1st cave..
There are at least 4 caves along this VERY VERY narrow trail.. They are all large enough for you to WALK into.. 2 have names: Hubbard and Ice.. Bring along a flashlight if you plan to explore them..
Apparently, many people find the first 2.5 miles of this ride(SCOUT trail) to be too difficult and they opt to take a 10 mile ride on a forest service road to get to where BEAR CREEK trail intersects the jeep road.. THOSE folks are missing out on 50% of an AWESOME singletrack ride.. FOREST HOLLOW trail (and SCOUT trail) will absolutely BLOW you AWAY..
And it and SCOUT trail can litereally KILL you.. ALL of these 2 trails are spent along a (at times) very narrow trail with a drop-off of 1,500 foot DOWN to the mighty Colorado River and Interstate 70 below..
Your reward for surviving this ride is a recovery dip in the Glenwood Springs city-block sized spa and cabana.. Too Cool..
If you are making a trek to Moab (duh) then give yourself an extra day to do this (relatively unknown) ride.. It'll be near the top of your ride list from now on.. Oh yeah
