TRAIL REVIEWS   review this trail

I liked this trail for the most part, though My group & I found the route color markings a little confusing in some spots as i remember one post seeming to have every colored arrow pointing the same way & also different ways at the same time...beings we are all pretty much beginer mtb'ers we took one look at a red section because we were curious & we quickly remembered that we were still beginers...I think we would all return to try it again but none of us were very excited about the sandy sections which there seemed to be alot of (or the horses) The sandy areas re-affirmed my opinion that I dont miss being clipped in on mtb.

The trail has been much improved over the last 2 months. They have done alot of maintenance to fix the eroded portions of both the red and green trails (others don't need fixing). In August it was getting pretty poor but now it is in the best condition that it has been in for a long time. Also, they have partially separated the red trail from the horses. If my memory serves correctly, there are four re-routes. Overall, it improves the trail by adding interest in several areas.

Awesome trail! I rode the red loop and it was great from start to finish. There is literally a little bit of everything (climbs, jumps, downhill, switchbacks, rocks/roots, and flats). No matter what type of riding you like you will enjoy this trail. My favorite part of the trail was "table top chute" which was a fast downhill with some slight drops. The whole trail was great though. Excellent markings and trail maintenance make this a great place to ride. Looking forward to riding here again!

I agree with most posters. These trails are fun with tons of flow. The red loop is the best, 100% singletrack of the intermediate variety. Green loop is great as well but does include about 1 mile of forest jeep road to access the actual singletrack. Combine for a nice 16mile ride. You can fly on these trails as we are in SW michigan and there is zero climbing. Just how mountain biking is suppose to be! Its 8 bucks if ur a out of state vistor and like 29 for a pass for the year.

These trails are a lot of fun. Nothing too crazy, but plenty of flow. There are a few moments that are technical but those are limited. I saw a dude on a 10 speed with NO suspension ripping through the trails, that would be a challenge.

I've been biking for for around 3 months now and I loved this trail system. I wouldn't say there was anything just too challenging in it though. It has a good flow and is well marked and maintained. A few of the climbs will sneak up on you but on the second ride through, they were conquered.

Great fall day to ride. There is some sand that will come into play at bottom of hills and sometimes when banking turns. There is a lot of variety of things to encounter on the trail. It keeps you on your toes. This review is only for the red since I haven't rode the other sections in 9+ years. There are a couple areas where it's not marked well. My friend and I ran into other riders that were actually going the right way. We had to back track to find the trail section we missed. Other than that section everything else is laid out well. The trail is shared with hikers and horses.

Really liked this trail since the first time I rode it 4 years ago. Excellent for bikers starting out and working their way up. For great fun, "Granny's Garden" and "Roller Coaster" are some of the "must do" trails. Trails are very well maintained and are always full of new surprises with each ride. Great trails for riders of all ages. Cons: Does allow horses to ride in the trails. Be aware of any at the time of riding.

3 trails (red,Green, yellow listed more difficult to easiest) Thee is also a beginner blue trail. There is something here for everyone! Located inside F.Custer state park $24 annual, 6 daily for resident it well worth the visit here. Stay at the campground for the weekend and have a ball. The red trail is my fav with a bit of everything. Switchbacks, few moderate climbs, log piles...This trail is lots of fun as is the Green too just not as long. When finished take a short drive to Battle Creek and stop in at Arcadia Brewing or Head to K-zoo and stop at Bells Brewing

Similar Trail: Yankee Spring and its only about 30 min drive from here! My rating for Fort Custer would be More difficult for the Red or Green trail

Great ride for everyone. The red loop is easily the most fun. My older daughter (a very aggressive 12 yo) and I ride the whole red loop. My wife and younger daughter join us for most of the red loop but skip the harder sections such as Granny's Garden. For most of the trail the whole family can join because most obstacles can be ridden around by younger or less experienced riders. This means that both younger or inexperienced riders and advanced riders can enjoy the same loop. This is easily the best ride in the area.

Awesome trail! My most favorite around. Very well maintained trails. The "Trenches", "Rocks n' Roots", and "Grannies Garden" have to be my most favorite sections. Awesome ride for beginners and experts. Happy riding!

This is one of the best maintained trails and well marked trails that I have seen in Mi. I rode the Red loop which was an 8 mile loop, and is rated the most difficult. I had a blast riding this loop. Granny's Garden, the Amusement Park, and Cardiac HIll are just a few of the fun names that are printed on the trail map that I recieved @ the DNR booth at the park gate. Excellent trail, I would recommend giving it a try.

Fort Custer has 3 great loops and one OK loop. The trails are well maintained and the signs are great. The red and green loops get the most usage. Red has 3 memorable, but manageable, climbs and fun Army training trenches to ride through as well as a good mix of XC and technical sections. The green has two track, tight singletrack, a few switchback climbs and log crossings. All managable by an intermediate rider with good lungs. The yellow is a great beginner's trail. If it has been dry for a while, there may be some sandy spots. The blue trail, which starts at a different trailhead, is the 4th choice for most riders. The South West Chapter of MMBA does a good job working on these trails. Trails are open to horseback riding, hiking, dog sled training and hunting.
