Pros: A good introduction to Front Range riding.

Cons: Not comprehensive.

Recommendation: A good introduction to Front Range riding that folks new to the area should pick up. There decent maps and location information, as well as some neat historical info. Its just missing a few of the trails that make the Front Range a great way to ride.

Pros: Lots of trails and information

Cons: Not extensive

Recommendation: This book covers many trails on the front range and is a great starting point for mountain biking in that area. The descriptions contain great maps and directions, and the chance of getting lost is pretty much non existent.

The only issue is that this book is definitely NOT comprehensive. There are many great trails that aren't listed in here. They may have just been passed over, but many have been added since the book was last updated.

Pros: Covers major trails from north of Fort Collins down to Colorado Springs. Trail descriptions contain stories, historical facts, and points of interest that tell you more than just what to expect from the ride.

Cons: Trails are not indexed by technical or physical difficulty so you just have to page through the book to find one that matches what you want. Trail descriptions contain stories, historical facts, and points of interest that tell you more than just what to expect from the ride (yes... this was a pro too).

Recommendation: Most of the information in this book is still accurate but since it was last updated in 2003, it is best to confirm the important parts (trail head location, landmarks, closures) on the web whenever possible. Sections of the trails of the maps in the book are marked with the diamond=expert / square=intermediate / circle=beginner scheme commonly used to categorize ski trails. This difficulty designation, along with the elevation profile provided for each trail gives a quick graphical picture of what a trail is like. Each trail is also described by a set of turns and notable trail features listed by mileage which can be very helpful when combined with a bike computer's odometer feature. The individual trails detailed in the book are accompanied only by a written description of how to find the trail head. For those who do better with a map, tracking the directions on a printed (or online) road map before loading up the bikes and heading towards the trail might help avoid time lost looking for the parking area.
