29ers from a female perspective

posted May 28, 2008 by trek7k

I’ve been considering a 29er for my next mountain bike and I’ve been trying to read as much as I can online about others’ experience with the larger wheels. I’ve even test ridden a Cannondale 29er and it felt great but I imagine the 29er works so well for me because I’m tall and I’m not bad at climbing (not to toot my own bike horn ;) ). But are women trying and buying 29ers? I doubt Mudhunny would be interested since the wheels are as tall as she is but I found at least one woman who seems to be enjoying her 29er.

Eva Grabinski is riding a True North Cycles enduro 29er and has written a couple posts so far. I imagine Eva will be posting more about her experiences, grab her RSS feed and see how things go!

I can’t speak for women riding 29ers (although I do see some in pics from time to time). Generally speaking, I’ve been really stoked on my Niner EMD 29er. I came off a Trek Fuel 98 FS bike. I find I can still descend as quickly as my FS friends except in the really bone jarring gnarly stuff. Anything with flowing singletrack I can dominate on the 29er. My one grip is the climbing. Not being a gifted climber, I find the bike a bit sluggish going up hill. My other grip is super technical sections. I do have to say I miss the 26er, but I hope it is just a matter of getting used to the bigger wheels.

I’m a guy and the only thing I’ve done with 29ers is stand over them in the shop. I’m 5′ 8″ but my in seam is short. At least the ones I’ve looked at just don’t seem like they’d work well for someone who is short. I’m sticking to 26″ wheels for now.
