Description
Tres Marias is a shared hiking and biking trail that starts at the parking

area at the bottom of the mountain (where the outdoor cafe and artesians

are located). The east side trails are mainly used by hikers, but the trails

go around the mountain adjacent to route 60 and up to the top of Tres

Marias. If you climb, be prepared for some hike-a-bike sections (as much as

5-10 min) but the trails at the top are smooth and easy...though there are

a few spots with a lot of exposure.

Review: The main trailhead is on the east side of Ullum dam. There are trails going all over the place, and it is easy to get lost if you don't keep track of where you come from. Most trails are built for and by hikers, but there are armored rock sections, small jumps, and evidence of mountain bike use everywhere. The trail to the top of Tres Marias mountains is steep; you will have to dismount, put your bike on your shoulders, and walk up steep switchbacks for 5-7 minutes. The climb is worth it. Once at the top of the switchbacks, most everything can be ridden with ease, as the trail is well used and maintained. From the summit you can follow the ridge south, and if you keep an eye on route 60 to the west then you can find one of many trails down that will parallel the road and go back to the trailhead. On route 60 you will undoubtedly encounter a plethora of cyclists. Note this area is very remote in some places. Also of note, there are some seriously gnarly places for carving your own DH lines (especially on the west side of the dam), especially if you have a long travel bike and brass huevos.
