Description: Rail trail in far southwestern Virginia. Very easy - 12 miles roundtrip through state scenic river gorge, part of recently designated 125-mile backroad/back country route system; this trail is bordered by sheer cliffs, hardwood trees and the river. Access is via U. S. Route 58-A at Coeburn, VA., then south on Route 72 for 2 miles and follow the signs, large parking area maintained by U.S. Forest Service. Coeburn is due west of Abingdon which is off of exits 17, 19, and 21 on Interstate 81.

Actually, it's the Guest River Gorge Trail, not the Guest River Trail, and it's located outside Coeburn, not St. Paul.
This trail is sort of like the Virginia Creeper Trail's baby brother. The GRGT is much shorter, has a better, smoother surface, and its scenery isn't as varied, but it is stunning -- lots of towering rock formations, several waterfalls and a scenic river. It's gorgeous when the leaves are at their peak.
I gave the trail a 3, mostly because of the scenery. The only challenge is the climb back up to the trailhead from the bottom, and the grade is pretty tame. A good ride for recreation, a family outing or fitness.
