Solid advice Michael. You make great points. Getting a proper fitting frame is important, having proper stand over height is crucial if your riding in snow. Nothing worse than crushing the family jewels! I'd also add that if you live in a land of snow and ice studded tires are essential, it can be the…
Awesome trip through amazing country. Exceptional way to bring awareness of a serious issue to all Alaskans to the forefront. Bjorn, Kim and crew have accomplished amazing feats of strength and endurance all over Alaska. Hope to see you at Big Fat Bike Festival in Homer, AK this winter.

Great footage. I've driven through the Yukon several times, was always in a hurry and never had the time to explore. Such an amazing place, I might just have to check it out this winter. I'm guessing the video was shot in the spring as they looked lightly layered. Better bring extra layers!

Happy GFBD 2016! May the flakes fall and everyone in snow zones get their snow.
Great list Greg. I'm up in AK and I bought the 45nrth Wolfgar boot. For my neck of the woods it's a great boot as we get stupid cold at times. One item I'd add is an insulated water bottle, if it's stored in your frame bag you'll actually have liquid. I'm probably going to…
I guess not many Alaskans read Singletracks. Surly brought the Pugs to mass market with much consultation from Alaskan John Evingson who was already making his own fat bikes in AK. Mark Gronewald was also making the Wildfire fat bike before the Pugs came to market. FatBack and 9:zero:7 followed shortly after with their complete…

Hey Mongwolf, make it happen! Night rides on snow are amazing, the best is when the trails are already packed and it's lightly snowing. I've pedaled through a few heavy snows, which is also a blast but you burn out faster if your packing trail. It's why I love Anchorage, so many people on fat…

It's not easy to be honest, thanks Greg for sharing. Depression has it's negative stigmatism that has many not wanting to admit out loud that they suffer from it. Most of us suffer from seasonal depression. I live in Anchorage, AK, in winter it's get really dark, like sunrise at 9:30am and sunset at 4:00pm.…
Thanks for the stroll down memory lane Chris! I lived in Portland from 2000 to 2004, rode Surveyors Ridge and the Dog River Trail several times. It is one of my favorite all time rides. The views are out of this world and the trail has the old school primitive feel. I always enjoyed the…
Tubeless on the Fat Bike is the way to go. If your running aluminum rims with knockouts its more problematic than rim without knockouts. I upgraded to Nextie carbon WD2 rims and have a reliable tubeless set up. It's not uncommon to have a few burps and seeping at first but after a ride or…
I'm up in Alaska, the Fat Bike has been a game changer here. It may not make sense for those that don't live where winter visits each year or don't have beaches to ride. I ride my Fat Bike year round, it kicks ass on snow, we have endless beach options and I use it…
Given the information that Brad ran into the bear, I'm glad they have called off the hunt. You can't blame any animal for acting defensively. I live in Alaska. Every ride is in bear country, even in town on paved bike trails. I just rode Resurrection Pass last weekend by myself, definite bear territory. I…

Great article, thanks Roger. Cool that you got your first mountain bike in Kodiak in 1989, I got mine in Anchorage the same year. I'm 46yrs old, not a racer, not a trainer, just a mountain biker trying to get / stay in decent shape. Last weekend I tackled a 39 mile traverse in Alaska,…
