They may a little, but that is not really their aim. The insert does push directly against the sidewalls, and likely there is some added stability. I only used the insert in the rear tire so I didn't notice any significant difference.

Eastman, I agree that a bearing puller or dowel works best, but with some patience and a good light a wide blunt screwdriver can also get the job done. You simply need to take care not to scratch the hub shell, which really isn't that difficult.
