This is the nightmare for any bike owner pic.twitter.com/T1JhIpqu75

In this dashcam footage, a mountain bike flies off the back of an SUV executing a high-speed pass. The footage shoes the bike hitting the ground, the tire exploding with sealant flying everywhere, and the bike flying off into the field, narrowly missing a nearby car.
Isn’t this every mountain biker’s worst nightmare?!
wow looks like the bike wasn’t secure on that rack
Ahem, what rack is that? Remind me to not buy one like that.
That’s why I have a pickup truck, no rack necessary! I would have had a heart attack and crashed my car if that was my bike!
I do believe this is due to them driving on the wrong side of the road.
Looks like the driver didn’t seem to notice. Probably a surprise when they got to the trailhead or home. I normally lock my bike to the rack with a cable-lock, so if it comes lose, I’ll drag it behind my car until I notice the sparks.
Maybe. If something steel touches down. At night. If you are not looking at your phone.
I had my bike fall off the hitch rack on the way to ride the 401 in Crested Butte this summer. Totally lucked out and just scraped the grip and seat, yes it was my fault not the rack I own. I was so excited to get my wife out to ride the trail I didn’t tighten the retainer down enough. Man that is the sickest feeling watching it bounce on the asphalt in the rear view mirror.
I threw up in my mouth just reading that
This is why you should buy a cheap minivan… Our from new 2003 Windstar is the perfect mountain bike vehicle and dog hauler.
I always added a rope through the frame with my old rack, because I didn’t trust the frame clamp. Twice it saved my bike. A bit of paranoia and redundancy can be a good thing.
Wow, drc …. redundancy. I’ve used that in other areas of course, but not on securing my bike. THANK YOU !!!!!!!!! And Dennis, your comment about travel and rebound “wins the prize” imo. Hilarious.
“Isn’t this every mountain biker’s worst nightmare?!”
And every driver’s nightmare! Imagine that hitting your windshield — or watching in the rear view mirror as YOUR bike hits the car BEHIND you! I use a long bungee cord through the frame to doubly secure my bike to the rack.
Exactly, just my thoughts: The biker looses a bike, the driver behind him can loose his life.
Having a pickup truck with cap on bed is a peace of mind to be able to put bike in.
I wish I could have seen their faces when they got home!!!
I always strap bikes and kayaks to the rack AND to each other.
