Saris Freedom SuperClamp Hitch Rack – $430

There are plenty of ways to carry bikes on vehicles, but my preferred method is the hitch rack variety. You can leave both wheels on, which frees up space in the car, and you don’t have to worry about overhead clearance. The Freedom SuperClamp is the newest hitch rack in Saris’s line. It comes mostly assembled out of the box, you just have to slide on the wheel trays, mount it to your vehicle’s receiver, and you’re ready to go.

At just 30lbs for the two bike rack, the SuperClamp is easy for just about anyone to take on and off a vehicle. Like most of the other top racks out there, the SuperClamp doesn’t make any contact with the frame of your bicycle. Instead, two large “shepherd” hooks slide down over your tires to hold the bike in place. The way the rack is designed, it can fit the majority of wheel sizes, even down to 20″ BMX bikes. It also works with fat bike tires, but you will need to buy the optional fat tire wheel trays. Saris integrated cable locks into the rack, which provide some security for post ride grub-grabbing, but they should be paired with more substantial u-locks or chains if you’re leaving your bikes unattended for extended periods.

Even with the an adaptor to make the 1 1/4″ arm fit my 2″ hitch, the rack is rock solid. The individual components of the rack all feel solid as well – the pivots for the arms are case-hardened, which should make them extremely durable. After months of heavy use, the detents are still crisp in the arms and on the hooks, and the rack has yet to develop any slop.

And the icing on the cake of the SuperClamp is that it’s made in Wisconsin and carries a lifetime warranty for the original owner. Should anything go wrong with your rack 5 or 10 years from now, you’re covered.
