The 2018 Mongoose Teocalli Offers Bomber Build Kits for Reasonable Prices

Mongoose has just lifted the curtain on the drastically revamped Teocalli for model year 2018, and I traveled to their US headquarters in Madison, WI, to get the scoop. Not only do the new models of the Teocalli offer significantly upgraded component builds, but the frame has been improved as well.

To begin, the new Teocalli frame features 160mm of suspension travel for 2018 (up from 150mm). The suspension platform has also been revamped, with a free floating shock position combined with a four-bar linkage. As with seemingly all suspension improvements, Mongoose claims this design will increase the suspension’s responsiveness in the rough and while braking, limit pedal feedback when dropping the hammer, and generally climb and descend better than ever before. The rear shock sizing is also now metric.

The frame details have seen upgrades as well, with Boost rear spacing, internal cable routing, and lighter and stronger aluminum.

As for geometry, the new Teocalli gets the LLS treatment with a longer top tube, slacker angles, shorter stem, and wider bars. The head tube angle is now 66.5 degrees across all sizes. Check out the chart below for the full geometry breakdown:

While the frame updates provide massive improvements over the 2017 Teocalli, in general these changes simply make the Teocalli on par with other alloy bikes in the market. But what sets Mongoose apart, however, is the value that they provide through the bikes’ component specs.

Mongoose Teocalli Pro – $2,999

The top-tier Teocalli maxes out at just $3,000–a price tag that you might only see on the bargain-basement bikes from some other brands. Yet despite such a relatively-affordable price, the component builds of these bikes are absolutely bombproof!

The Pro comes spec’ed with a Fox 36 DPS 3-position Evol fork, a Fox Float DPS rear shock, an 11-speed Shimano XT drivetrain (with an 11-46 cassette), Shimano SLX brakes, X-Fusion Manic dropper post, WTB KOM i29 rims, and Schwalbe Hans Dampf 27.5×2.35″ tires. For just $3,000 this build is impressive!

At a claimed weight of 31.75lbs the Pro isn’t a featherweight, but at this price and with this much suspension travel it’s competitive with other similar bikes that I’ve been testing recently.

Mongoose Teocalli Expert – $2,499

The Expert is spec’ed with a RockShox Yari RC Stealth fork, RockShox Deluxe RT rear shock, an 11-speed mixed Shimano SLX drivetrain, Shimano BR-M615 brakes, an X-Fusion Manic dropper post, WTB STp-i29 rims, and Schwalbe Hans Dampf 27.5×2.35″ tires.

Claimed weight: 32.25lbs.

Mongoose Teocalli Comp – $1,999

The Comp is spec’ed with a Manitou Magnum Comp fork, X-Fusion 02 Pro RXL rear shock, a 1×10 Shimano Deore drivetrain, Shimano BR-365 brakes, X-Fusion Ace dropper post, WTB STp-i29 rims, and WTB Vigilante 27.5×2.3″ tires.

Both of the sub-$2k builds from Mongoose are very competitive with the bikes listed on our budget full suspension buyer’s guide.

Claimed weight: 34lbs

Unfortunately the 2018 Teocallis weren’t available for us to test, so stay tuned this winter for a real life review as test bikes become available.
