This year I started commuting to work on my mtb and it was sloooow going, so I got an old ( early 80’s) Motobecane 10 speed frame and built it up as a fixed gear commuting bike. It is great to ride the road with a real road bike and the fixed gear aspect adds enough of a twist to make the boring road a fun place to be (not as fun as the trails).
In January I entered a downhill mtb race at a ski mountain in Maine, it was a slalom type course with a 4′ jump at the finish line. I was doing about 15-20mph at the jump and my front tire broke through the snow at the top of the jump 😮 I ended up passing my bike in the air and landed on my head/face. Was out cold on impact and was being loaded into the rescue before I knew what was happening. After 5 hrs in the ER and CT scans of my head, spine, and abdomen was told I got a concusion and banged up my inards pretty good. After 5 days of p’ing blood everything was OK.
Now I’m a 3 season biker At least no downhill in the snow 😉
Thanks for the suggestions, I have been looking at the Reba but was a little concerned if it was rugged enough.
A bash guard is the way to go. I got a 9-speed bike this spring, it came with one. I don’t go out if my to bash rocks but now if there is a rock or log in my way I don’t hesitate to attack it.
Besides the big ring is only missed on the road, and I try to avoid roads anyway 😀I rode a Specialized Hard rock for 3 years (hardtail) This past year I bought a 29" rigid steel frame and fork bike, I LOVE IT!!! I do think I ride better now, it is because the bikle itself is a better feel so my confidense is better, also i am climbing stuff I never could before- probly do to better traction?
I was going to forget about my 26" bike all together but am now thinking about it as a s.s.
Don’t think I would ever buy a 26" bike again but who knows.I allways where a helmet.
Two weeks ago I was riding at Bradbury Mountain, a trail I ride often and pretty well. My rear rear tire caught a rock and kicked out slightly so I swerved to avoid a painful crash and instead hit a tree at about 12-15 mph and broke my helmet in two spotts. No injuries, just the embarassment 😳I tried night riding once, I borrowed a light from my brother and off I went through the woods. It was a 3 mile ride in at dusk, then the ride back, I was 1/2 mile in and encountered probably 100 bats, one hit my helmet and I freaked. Off came the helmet to see if it was in a vent hole, it was not but my night riding ended. I saw some house lights through the woods so I dragged my bike down a banking, across a stream, and up through somebodies back yard.
