It was a cool event, I haven’t seen any thing similar in FL besides the Xterra stuff.

When I did it the layout was run, bike, and run. Each run I believe was a 5k, so 10k total and the MTB was 8-10 miles.

    Hey Leah,

Last year I won a dirty spokes duathlon.

Basically just go hard at what your best at, I was not in the lead for the first run, but took over in the mtb section and held on for the last run.

Most people are either runners or bikers, so they won’t be fast the whole time.

Lol, everyone is posting random topics just for the contest.

Your right I pretty much just ride/race XC, but I got an itch to get airborne.

If you want to race seriously you need to decide, if you do, you want the lightest thing you can afford.

Carbon is crazy strong when engineered correctly, several companies make carbon DH bikes.

I don’t know why people have this perception that Aluminum is stronger than Carbon. There’s no welds on a carbon bike so there are no weak spots! Think about when an Aluminum bike gets a dent a carbon bike absorbs the same impact, like plastic doors on cars.

If you get a Scott or similar brand, you can completely lockout the suspension for climbs, smooth sections, and sprinting for that podium spot.

Personally FS 29ers are huge bikes, and a lot heavier. If you get a 29er don’t go FS especially for racing.

Look at the pros, they pretty much all ride carbon 26 HT or FS depending on the terrain.

A reminder about the work day this Saturday:

Just a reminder that we’ll be working on the Rock trail at 10 a.m. this Saturday. We’ll be working on the pump track (actually making the dual slalom into more of a pump track and making it longer). If you have them, bring shovels, rakes, tamping tools, and wheel barrows.

I’ll buy pizza for everyone for lunch. Bring water and snacks. We’ll get most of the work done by 3 so we can watch the game (or go ride).

Call/email me if you have any questions or need directions.

Hey guys great work on the trail so far, here is another e-mail from Clint Gibbs:

It looks like the only Saturday that will work this year (working around races and stuff) is October 30th. We will begin at 10 a.m on the pump track and will have a Bobcat tractor. Please bring shovels, rakes, tamping tools and even a wheelbarrow if you have one and can transport it. Also bring a machete and loppers in case we have extra hands and can do trail trimming too. And of course remember to bring a lunch and some water.

Also, if you had mentioned that you want to donate to the Rock trail, now would be the time to get it to me! We need to rent the Bobcat and get a load of dirt. Thanks!

PS Please shoot me an email if you can make it so I’ll know how many people we’ll have out there.

From Clint Gibbs, Rock church liaison and avid Mountain Biker.

This is for all of you mountain bikers out there, or parents of kids who ride/race BMX or mountain bikes. As some of you know we now have a pretty sweet pump track at the Rock trail built by the guys with the University of Florida and other local riders. It was used for a race a month or so ago.

We need to do some maintenance on the track to make it easier to ride for the masses, which involves taming the jumps down a bit, solving some drainage issues, and possibly extending the track. This will involve renting a Bobcat or similar machine. This is where we could use some help!

If you would like to donate to this project, we’d really appreciate it! $5 or $10 from a group of interested people would really help.

The Rock trail has become so much more than I imagined when I first got out there with a machete over 5 years ago. It excites me to see the scope of the trail expand, and I really get excited when I see my 6 year old son enjoying the new track.

Please email me directly at [email protected] if you’d like to help with donations and/or time.

    Thank you!

    Clint Gibbs

Only UF students can race for Team Florida, but anyone is welcome on our training rides.

However, there’s been talk about having an open DS race later in the year so we can get more use out of the course.

in reply to: Dual slalom in Gainesville FL!?!? #92211

That’s probably a good idea, but we don’t have a bobcat anymore and the church wants the holes filled in.

in reply to: Dual slalom in Gainesville FL!?!? #92207

Not really, were just hoping the Rock does not decide to build something there for awhile. To keep it going, it’s going to take the people who ride it to work on it, like most of Santos.

A starting gate is going up soon as well, if it’s not there already.

It’s pretty sweet to have DH in Gainesville, that’s for sure.

The team is mainly focusing on cleaning up the trail this week, as our TT and STXC is out there as well.

in reply to: Dual slalom in Gainesville FL!?!? #92205

It’s going to get ridin by the public, but it needs to be in racing shape for this weekend.

It will be worked into the regular XC trail eventually, it will survive longer if people ride it after our race.

It’s setup to be rather big currently, but it was only finished last week.

Anyone is welcome to come watch on Saturday, the race flier is at seccc.net

Yeah, wait til next week with the pics.

    Thanks!

in reply to: Dual slalom in Gainesville FL!?!? #92203

We, Team Florida, built it for our race this Saturday. It’s 95% done. Please be weary it cost a lot of labor, planning and money before advertising it to the entire world, especially before our event!

It’s for MTB’s only, please don’t ride anything with a motor on the course.

However, it will be built into part of the public Rock trail.

Is 2×9 possible with the SRAM XX?

in reply to: Light XC Crankset, Opinions? #91568

I’ll have to check out Race Face, right now I have a Shimano FC-M542. So it would be a 160 grams give or take savings. Any thoughts on quality? Stiffness? Thanks!

The weather is looking good and the schedule is looking better, up for riding some N. GA single-track tomorrow or this weekend?

Sounds like it could be the opportunity for a great new trail system, where did you find the details?

in reply to: Riding Bull Mountain area, Dahlonega, Georgia? #86238

Thinking about head up there this weekend on Sunday, what are the trails like right now?
