Alright it is on MSU soil in a sense. The Economic Research Center on the north side of campus off highway 182. The parking area for the High Performance Computing building is where you’ll park. The trail is thru some bushes at the north end of the parking lot. Sometimes called the HPC trails. Gonna go ride it tomorrow

adjusting knob is adjusted and cog is shifting smoothly now. No slips, no skips and I got every gear back now. Thanks for the help guys!

As far as the bike… I have no expectations of it at all except for it to continue to malfunction overtime since it is a low end bike. But as far as I’m concerned, I pedal and it moves so i’m gonna hit the trails with it getting more experience and then maybe one day i’ll be good enough to get a higher end bike and not be afraid of beating it up so bad. But for now this Mongoose will do just fine for a learner/ trainer. (Especially on the changing out parts and fixing aspect of it)

Thanks again for all the help. Glad it was an easy fix. College student…got no money…

Well i got my tire aligned and the gears seem to be doin a lil better but still not shifting thru each gear which is prolly one of those things that break down over time. And yeah it’s the one in my profile. It is a cheap-o bike but its what i could afford at the time and needed it… I’m working on getting a new one but gotta make this mongoose last until then. How can you check a derailleur to see if it’s bent?

Any comments on a Mongoose Nugget?

Check your cable tension. You mentioned your bike isn’t that old – have you adjusted everything after cable stretching/break-in?? Also, check your rear derailleur hanger if gears are slipping, it may be bent.

No i haven’t adjusted anything except the brake cable. I’ll have to look into the gear cables. And possibly the back derailleur is bent. Would the tire look like its somewhat crooked? like closer to one side of the frame?

Thanks man glad I found this site. It’s really helpful on finding trails in my area. And the forums are an excellent way to get hints and tips on anything and everything. I’m really looking forward to getting out on some trails that I don’t have to cut myself. Where I’m from the closest thing to a mountain we have is a house up on a hill. It’s all flat
First of all, every posting here has been helpful advise for salsa, the OP of this topic. You call it blah, blah, blah, freaking, blah arguing, well, if thats the way you feel, then so be it, but it is termed as "DEBATING" not arguing.

Second of all, you are obviously new to MTB’ing and Singletracks, so criticizing other members & experienced riders for there postings is not a good start. This is a member forum for MTBR’s and there will always be debates. Get use to it.

Third of all, there will always be a debate between clipless & platform pedals as their will always be a debate over 26er’s, 29er’s, and 69er’s among other things as well. This is life!
your right man where do i get off criticizing your debates and comments when I’ve only been a member for about an hour at the time… real bad way to start off… and I apologize.

I did see that movie, hahahahaaha,There’s never a camera when ya need one is there?
How high on the tree did you hit it,I mean, once you hit the tree you had to have fallen a little bit to the ground.I got that image in my head of you hitting the tree and sliding down it like a wet rag.hahahahaaha.

yeah tell me about it! that’d been great footage too… I had to be at least 6′ up the tree and no i didn’t slide down it like a fireman pole I had too much momentum i just kinda bounced off and landed flat on my back.

Worst crash… When i first started riding it was on small trails thru the woods in my neighborhood on the Gulf Coast that me and a buddy carved with a chainsaw and fourwheeler. We made some small hills one in particular right before a hard turn. We’re out riding one afternoon i’m out in front of my buddy and we’re twisting and turning thru the trail and coming up on that one special hill. I had a pretty good bit of speed and never expected to get airborne. I go sailing thru the air bout 6-7 ft off the ground straight towards a pine tree. I ditch the bike best i could. Have you ever seen George of the Jungle with Brendan Fraiser? When he faceplants the tree and his arms and legs wrap around it? I definitely pulled one of those " Watch out for that… BAM!…tree" moments Walked away with minor cuts and scraps but huge scars on my pride. LOL

I’m an extreme newbie to mtbk’n and to this website… I was readin thru all the reply and things for this topic and I gotta say, "I don’t think the guy that posted it got much help" I read two or three small things to help this guy out. I also read alot about it’s our style riding one way isn’t better than riding another it’s a choice blah blah freakin blah. My point exactly IT’S A CHOICE. If he wants to ride clipless and is wanting tips on how to improve give him tips on how to improve. I read alot of the comments made and I felt like I was stupid for posting the question…wait…I didn’t post the question! All I’m saying is leave the arguing out and just give the guy tips on clipless pedals.

I for one agree with practicing unclipping and clipping on level grassy areas till you get the hang of it. I had clips on a cross country bike and concrete isn’t so forgiving when you try to come to a stop and your feet get caught up in the clips. Just like anything else it takes practice on top of practice on top of more practice and once you think you got it practice some more.

Good luck man! I’m right there with ya on learning new things about mtbk’s
