  • in reply to: Moab vs Fruita? #113912

Here’s how I deal with the decision:
    Fruita = Spring
    Moab = Fall
Each is too good to exclude!

Yes. The Lime Gulch fire has evacuation orders and trail closures near the Buffalo Creek area.

I’m currently riding a 1999 Trek 7000 26" hardtail and a 2008 Trek Fuel EX8 26" full-suspension. However, in my workstand right now is a partially-assembled Niner EMD9 which will eventually take over for my 7000. When/If my EX8 finally gives up the ghost, I plan to replace it with a RIP9. I demo’ed a RIP9 last summer at White Ranch and LOVED it.

Although I only have significant trail time on 26ers, I think it is a serious bonus to have both a HT and a FS in the stable. The most obvious benefit is having a second bike to ride when your are "tinkering" with the other. But what I found interesting, is that I believe time on my FS has made me a better HT rider. The FS has given me the confidence to try different lines through technical terrain. The FS does compensate for some rider error, but that translates to more practice without injuring myself! Once I can clear an obstacle smoothly and consistently on the FS, I find I can duplicate the move on the HT pretty easily.

When I first moved to Colorado, I lived less than 3 miles from both the NBB brewery and the Odell Brewing Co. in Fort Collins. These days, I’m still only 90 minutes away, so I consider myself pretty fortunate. Of course with all of that readily available, I’m trying to find a reliable source for Alaskan Brewery Co. products! Particularly their Pale Ale (no, not the IPA!).

Forgot to add: I like to support NBB because they support the disc golf scene in Northern Colorado. Back when I was playing competitively, they would offer "A Case for an Ace" during local tournaments! The only thing better than hitting a hole-in-one was getting to stop by the brewery and pick out a case of your favorite!

Flying to San Fran in a couple of weeks and looking for a place to rent mountain bikes and suggestions for a premier "do not miss" trail… We are intermediate riders who ride primarily in the southeast near Asheville and North Georgia. Can anybody recommend a mountain range or national or state parks, say within 4 hours?? There looks to be a zillion trails on singletracks… hard to figure out the best one (s). Thanks!!

Last time I visited San Francisco and rented a mtb, I used Bike and Roll – San Francisco.

They had a good selection of mtbs, including a decent FS, trail bike (Gary Fisher Roscoe), which was my choice. The employees did a very good job of fitting me and adjusting the cock-pit for comfort.
As for a ride, my brother-in-law and I rode across the Golden Gate Bridge and rode the Tennessee Loops in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Not very technical, but great views, and plenty of climbing!

…and they’re heavy and expensive (for grips)… You can get them without barends too.

A pair of the non-barend race version GS-1s (used to be named GX-1?) are only around 155g. For the added comfort, that is not much of a weight penalty over your average lock-on grips. But they will run you about $36 or so…

Oh, and to answer your original question: When I wore out my original drivetrain, I replaced it with an SRAM X0 setup with a Stylo 3.3 crankset. I have really enjoyed the switch. I also changed out the handlebars, stem, and seatpost to the Bontrager Rhythm line; but that had nothing to do with performance, just tweaking the cockpit for fit.

I have owned a trek fuel for five years now.Try Kenda Nevegal tires. Otherwise leave bike alone. But i would NOT drop in from five feet. Bike was not designed for that unless you weigh about ten pounds. Fuel was never meant for big drops…

    +1 for sure.

I have ridden my ’08 EX8 pretty hard over the past few years, but I would never consider doing drops of 5′ on it. That’s even if I had the skills to pull it off! 😀 I’m not sure if even the Remedy is rated for something like that.

My favorite jerseys right now are from Sugoi; I have three Hans and two Wallaroo jerseys. They are all relaxed fit, and just loose enough to be comfortable without bunching under my Osprey pack. The Fino Tech fabric on the Hans is a wicking, quick-dry material, but it does not feel overly synthetic. The Wallaroos? I’ll admit that I was skeptical about merino wool until I tried it, now I just think they are awesome!

in reply to: Will you be able to afford your summer MTB road trip? #107029

I’ll do at least two trips this season: a Grand Jct./Fruita trip, and a repeat of the Crested Butte/Monarch Crest trip from last summer. The first will be a decent-sized group trip to spread out the expenses. My buddy and I will try to keep expenses down on the second by camping and bringing our own meals/beverages.

I disagree with the smooth tires also. If my mtn bike is my only bike and I want to commute, why would I wear down your "real" tires while riding on pavement?

+1! About three years ago, I bought a pristine 1999 aluminum hardtail on craigslist for a great price. It included a second wheelset too. I primarily use it for commuting with a set of semi-slicks, but I keep some knobbies on the other wheelset for any time my trail bike is being serviced. I don’t care if I get weird looks for the smooth tires, it makes a great commuter!

I like barends and don’t care what anyone says. I even have them on my flat bars on my rigid singlespeed.

+1 here too! I still run them even though I take some ribbing about it. Personally, I have only experienced the positive aspects and none of the negatives…

My wife got me a long-sleeve, merino wool Sugoi jersey. I think it will be fantastic for cool weather, especially when paired with a silk-weight Patagonia base layer.

Plus, my mom got me some Ergon GX-1 grips for the Niner EMD I am building for next season.

in reply to: Turkkey day ride! #103437

What a great three days! Wednesday was a NCSC group ride at Lake Pueblo State Park.
    Image
Thanksgiving morning was the annual Turkey Day ride in Ft. Collins: Coyote Ridge-Rimrock-Blue Sky-Indian Summer.
    Image
And yesterday was another NCSC ride at Deer Creek Canyon. (I forgot to bring my camera and Ralph hasn’t posted his pictures yet!)

I think today will just be an easy spin on the bike path!

in reply to: What have YOU learned about mountain biking? #102471

    11. The journey is far more important than the destination.

    12. It doesn’t matter [i:22n54p1k]what[/i:22n54p1k] you ride, it matters [i:22n54p1k]that[/i:22n54p1k] you ride.

    13. Without the ups and the downs, life would be pretty boring.

    14. I am not obligated to overcome an obstacle in the same manner as everyone else.

I agree and I enjoyed it too. IMO, they put a decent amount of thought into their decision. In fact, I think you can very easily deduce the company’s mission statement within Carla’s response…

[quote="fleetwood":1l3je6bk]Thanks for the info Trek7k. I don’t recall a write up on the Niner.

I didn’t get a chance to ride a Niner – they weren’t at Outdoor Demo OR the main Interbike show. Not sure what (if anything) to read into that…[/quote:1l3je6bk]
Apparently, Niner made a conscious decision not to attend Interbike this year. The topic came up on another mountain biking website’s forums. A representative from Niner responded on the thread with their reasoning. Although I am not really in the know when it comes to events like Interbike (or Outerbike, etc.), it seemed to make sense to me…

P.S. I didn’t include a link to the "other site" since I’m not sure if the singletracks.com powers-that-be would approve. I like this site too much to step on their toes!
