  • in reply to: A Beginner’s Review of Going Clipless #100381

Crashing sucks, but I’m a little worried to fully endorse (at least at this point) that the clipless pedals wont EVER cause a worse crash. My postulate was based off a small sample size. So, if you’re eating it pretty hard every time you hit the singletrack, I don’t know… I might stay out of the clips. Especially if i only wanted them to stay on the pedals better, I would go flats with soft shoes like the downhill dudes. But if you really need that upstroke, as of right now I’m of the opinion that you’ll pop off the pedals pretty easily in a crash.

I found that the proper breaking technique actually lightened the load I put on my hands. When I started, I ALWAYS had two fingers on the break levers, but you only need one to apply the needed amount of breaking pressure. When I made the switch, the added control from the third finger on the grip actually allowed me to lighten up my death grip 😆 (I had previously had a problem with my hands falling asleep, now no prob). Don’t know if this is new to ya, but it was to me, and helped a lot.

I automatically thought of the bike I almost went with (the pine mountain 29er by marin)! I too dig the green, but the light blue was too much for me. I like their nail trail 29er that’s black with the neon green, but i went with the cheaper bolinas ringe (more entry level, less color).

I also like a good white and red bike.

**fingers crossed that i linked an image correctly, i have no idea**

I love it when I find two roots a good distance apart that I can "roll" (dunno if this term is MTB appropriate but when I raced BMX we called it "rolling" if you floated the front tire over the obstacle and rolled the back tire through, kind of like a wheelie)

in reply to: Newb here #100067

No experience with a SS here but I’m a fan of the 29ers. They truly do role well and can get over obstacles with more ease than a 26er (at least in my riding comparisons), although I think you sacrifice a little weight and have to corner a little differently. A lot of people will reply with "it depends on what you want to do with it", which is VERY true, but it sounds like you’re into something that’s an all around sort of bike. Again, I’m a big fan of the 29er.

Right now is a very volitile time in the frame industry, carbon is becoming the norm for a lot mtn bike manufactuers( I love my carbon nomad!). I would say that waiting through the summer, if you can, would be a good idea. I know specialized and scott both had hardtail 29ers w/ carbon frames weighing around 22-23 lbs for less than $3k in 2011, they may be even better in 2012.

But how long does carbon last? I’m weary about the tradeoff’s between lighter parts and endurance. Is it easier to break a carbon frame (sorry, I might be bouncing the topic here)?

Went into my LBS one day with a whole list of upgrades I wanted to do for my bike (fork, wheels, handlebars, etc), but he took a look at my bike (which is not even 3 months old but very entry level) and said the cheapest way to get all of the better equipment on a bike would be to save up and get the better bike, versus dropping a bunch of bones on seperate parts. He said the manufacturers assemble the bikes cheaper than we can because they get their parts in bulk.

So, per that advice, don’t build, save and buy.

    Thoughts?

Haha +1 on the fluids. A buddy of mine went to Denver for training with his business and his station at the training room ha 4 bottles of water at it… he was encouraged to drink them all, and keep drinking throughout the day.

in reply to: Doc told me not to ride, but… #99897

I admit, I know I shouldn’t ride… so I have two choice: 1) disassemble the bike so I don’t ride it or 2) spend a lot of time on singletracks. Well… if my posting becomes erradical nonesense, mods, feel free to boot me for a while haha. No, I know I should try to stay off. He just wants to see if riding is what’s causing the problem, so it’s not like I’m trying to heal something. At any rate, maybe I’ll just ride some light, fireroad type stuff and stay off the singletrack as a nice medium. Or (gulp) run for exercise…

Ran into a downhill meets downhill situation last night… crazy! Luckily we both picked "right lane" because we were bombing at the bottom!

in reply to: What to do when it rains? #99855

When I’m not riding, I live my life vicariously through the many helmet cams on youtube and on this website 😀 It’s a good way to scout some trails at least.

I’ver done some minor investigation. Tent camping is 12 bucks and almost right next to the trailhead.

And here’s a description on some of the trails:

And if we want to really go crazy, we could aslo whitewater raft while there. It’s about 41-46 bucks depending on the day, but I’m really only concerned about MTBing.

Yeah, i usually find that uphill riders stop first because they are moving slower, even though I’m breaking hard on a downhill. So, on a downhill I definitely attempt to stop, but usually find that they have already bailed the trail

in reply to: So who introduced you to Cycling? #99665

Parents sent me to a BMX clinic at Black Mountain BMX in Arizona for a 10th birthday present (mom figured it was safer than go-kart racing). Anyway, I was good at it. The bug must have stuck because I crossed some MTBers at Norris when hiking and got to thinking about a road bike I had collecting dust, so I made the ole switcharoo and now I’ve found a new obsession.

Anyone else start out BMXing when they were younger?

Cool, i’ll grind out some more details over the next week(s) and have a more formal presentation of the idea 😆 this could be epic

High 90’s would be rough… especially while camping. hmm… that makes it hard to plan for. Postpone idea til early fall?

Okay, tried it yall’s way, with a good jam on the way to the tracks… WOW, i was so ready. I went with "I hope you die" by Bloodhound gang, haha. Sooooo, subject matter is a little rough but the guitar and double bass, heck yeah! I had my 29er carvin today!

It’s all just got me worried, especially when people like that are in a group of the like-minded. A group of em poppin out of a truck could really get one of us hurt, like if that guy were in a truck full of his buddies with just you, no tellin how far they would’ve taken it. It’s so effin hard, but we’ll just have to take the high rode when riding alone and try our damdest to educate them (seems futile, I know). Eff em anyway, we’re in better shape, we’ve got a longer life expectancy 😀

in reply to: Getting Cussed Out by a Fat Redneck #99525

Some people are just wired that way man… there’s usually more there than we know. Alcoholism, family violence, etc… I worked retail during return season in undergrad and felt like a big white dog turd (step brothers reference) the entire time because of how angry people got, and how they insulted me. I find it so friggen hard to sit back and let those people walk on me when I’m doing nothing wrong, so I totally feel you!

You might lose some weight, but how about strappin a crowbar to the frame too 😃
good thing trees don’t get pissed at us, we’d have a whole host of problems on the singletrack
