I’d like to second what mtbgreg said, Quehl Holler trail at Blanket’s Creek is a rockin’ good time. I’d also like to add Henry Farm Park in Jacksonville, AL. It is only about 3 miles long but it is a tough ride with some good little climbs. I’ve heard it has been improved but I am not sure what the changes were….I need to get back up there…

in reply to: broken spokes and flat tires #113420

Someone may have already mentioned this but….Try getting some tire liners for the flats. I’ve used them in my 29" and had NO flats at all. They are pretty cheap…http://www.pricepoint.com/Brand/Mr-Tuff … -Liner.axd ………… and they work like a champ. I guess you could go tubeless if you wanna mess with that…I have no experience in tubeless. As far as the broken spokes go…I cannot help you. My cheap bontrager wheels get broken spokes about every other ride. It’s just the way it is i think if you have cheap wheels. Paying $500 for a new wheel set is not an option. I’d buy some spokes and change them yourself. Just set the tension close to the others. I don’t think it matters that much. My took my rear tire to have it "trued" cause it was all outta wack. I paid the guy and took the tire home. It is basically the same as it was. Maybe that stuff is a science and maybe it is luck….and maybe it doesn’t matter anyway on cheap stuff….

in reply to: Loose front derailluer cable #118085

    Thanks Schwim,
Yeah the limit screws are good. The chain isn’t coming off the rings on either extreme. Plus they wouldn’t have anything to do with the chain not going to the middle right….correct? I guess it is just the difference in the new crank and the index movement of my shifter. I’ll just continue removing the slack when I shift. I think I’ll remove the derailluer and clean it up and readjust and get it the best i can. It just seems goofy that getting the slack out the correct way would alter the shifting and now allow enough movement to get from the largest back to the middle…oh well…

in reply to: Crankset/Bottom bracket issue #117288

Yeah…the issue is hard for me to follow too and even more difficult to put into words. From what i can tell the two chain rings are spaced the same. I just don’t see how it would cause the front derailleur to have to max out each limit screw. I thought maybe my shifter sequencing was off somehow (can that happen?). I wish that I’d have just replaced it with the exact same crank…finding it on line was cheap and easy. I’m gonna take the bike to my LBS on Tuesday to see what they can do.

Santa Cruz Bicycles Nickel Frame w/ FOX RL @ $600.00

Both of these are more suitable as "All Mountain/Trail" rigs (not the best for light Cross Country use). Heckler is more plush with the extra bit of travel. Nickel has taper head tube, anti-bob pivot geometry, and has been discontinued. I’d recommend the Nickel while they still last.

Thanks Blundar, I’m impressed with the prices of these frames. $600 is pretty affordable…though it would have to wait for front suspension and components. Anyone else have any input on these? Indeed the Nickel sounds pretty good…

It really looks awesome. I cannot even imagine riding in snow like that. Not much snow down in AL. Bah, I’d probably just get a sinus infection from riding in that cold………….

Contact Pat @ Wigs Wheels in downtown Anniston. I think it is 13th street and Noble. Pat is a trusted friend, and he can advise you about your wheel issues.

I figured i’d bump this back up. Absolutely Wig is a cool cat….Love that shop. I visit those dudes more often than i care to admit. However, i just can’t see that my choices are either my stock bontrager wheels or $1000 mavic crossmax wheels. There has got to be some middle-ground.. I’ve been looking at maybe the 29" Mavic Crossride wheels…I can get them online for around $290. We’ll see…

    in reply to: Front wheel/hub problem… #113470

According to Trek, the fork on my bike is a 2010 Rock Shox TORA SL SOLO AIR 29 T80mm w/G2 OFFSET w/STEEL STR, w/TURNKEY LO. It was set to my weight (around 190) when i bought the bike but i’ve never messed with the rebound. To be honest i looked at it for the first time the other day…i put it on the slowest setting (was on the fastest). this issue is definitely in the fork. The metallic "banging" i can feel (and sometimes hear) is the fork bottoming out or the fork returning and bottoming out on the upstroke. I really wish i could find what the air pressure is suppose to be in the non-drive side of the fork. I read on a forum that a 220lb rider kept it around 190psi. I’m not quite that heavy so i think i’ll put it around 180psi…not sure how i’ll find that psi around…On the drive side it doesn’t matter if i switch it to lock out or not it still does basically the same thing. i’m going to try to find a rebuild kit and change the seals. I don’t really know what else to do…..

    in reply to: Front wheel/hub problem… #113468

I checked the bearings and cups last night. Both were in good shape and are rolling smoothly. This has got to be an issue with the fork. I did notice that even when you switch the little lever on top to "lock-out" it doesn’t lock. My front suspension, I feel, probably needs some maintenance or servicing. Anyone know what this entails? Can it be done at home? LBS?

in reply to: New to MTBing FORKS QUESTION!!! #113152

    MJ,
I’d say before you drop however much on a Trek. Look at Bikesdirect.com. The Motobecane bikes are a great buy and have great reviews. I just bought my road bike from them. I own a Trek Cobia (which I enjoy very much). I just wish I’d have known at the time that i could get much more bike for the amount of money i spent. For the $1000 I spent i could have got a very good full suspension bike with better components then came on my Cobia. Give em a look….

in reply to: 29er wheelsets #112748

I weigh around 190. I’ve had a couple pull through the hub and a couple break at the nipple. They are coming apart just from riding. Probably from the downhill on that trail. I am leery of the cheaper wheel but dropping $999 on some wheels seems crazy…I paid nearly that for the bike…Anyway I plan on going to my LBS today, we’ll see…

in reply to: Hydraulic vs Mechanical disc mountain bike brakes #111817

I’ve only owned a couple bikes (so far) and only one of which had disc brakes. The original brakes were hydraulic (Promax). I had so many issues with them that I finally replaced them with mechanicals, 2011 BB7s. Like one of the previous posts said, hydraulics work good when they work. Mine never worked good, maybe cause they were cheap. Based on all the research i did before i "upgraded" i went with the BB7s and am not disappointed. I like that i can adjust them with no problem with no freaking bleed kit. Pair them some Avid speed dial 7s and you really cannot go wrong….

in reply to: Shimano Octalink Crank issue #110404

I was able to clean up that thread and get it out with my Sette tool. I never took out the bottom bracket as i just didn’t figure it was necessary. I’ve had no obvious issues with it plus they are sealed bearings. Everything is back together now and all I’m working on now is a perfect adjustment on my brakes and rear derailleur. SATURDAY, will be my first ride after my little unfortunate crash. Shoulder isn’t 100% but i can’t wait anymore……..Thanks for the help.

in reply to: Chain slip #110193

Also check the B adjustment on your derailleur. I had the same issue for a while and after I increased the tension and got my derailleur hanger and largest sprocket on my cassette as close as they could be, I never had the issue again.

in reply to: Best Disc Brakes? #110116

Thank you guys for your help. My bike isn’t terribly fancy so I think I’ll go with the BB7s. Inexpensive is a big plus for me…especially since the wife has to be onboard. I like the ease of maintenance and simplicity. I don’t think I’ve seen them come as a package with the brake levers….guess I have to get those separate. Thanks again

I can’t wait for these trails. CAN’T WAIT. I worked on them with IMBA and other volunteers last Sat. I am covered in poison ivy today but it was worth it. We’re heading back up there this Sat. after the presentation at the Anniston Meeting Center to do a little more work before it gets dark. Anyone, everyone, come out and join. This will be an incredible boost to Calhoun county. It’ll obviously be awesome for local mountain bikers since we’ve lost so many miles due to land clearing.

in reply to: College student starts his own bike company #103190

"A further question: who wants to buy cookie-cutter Chinese bikes anyways? Apparently, he assumes that college kids looking for a cheap commuter do, because they are probably just looking at the price tag. And the thing is, he’s probably right."

The free market will decide whether or not they want Chinese bikes. If this guy’s shop does well then great for him. Personally, I probably wouldn’t purchase one. If his shop does poorly it’ll be up to him to change his business to meet whatever his customer base is. The free market is just that. Free to fail, free to succeed. The risk is his to take….

in reply to: Looking for Riders in Blue Ridge GA #100837

Jimmy, I’ve never heard of Mulberry Gap? That a specific trail? Sept 9-11 sounds good, maybe I could join at lease one day or two…

I hope to be up in Jasper soon. Not to say that I wouldn’t cruise over there to ride Blankets if a group was going. I’d have to convince my wife it was a rare occasion. 😕

I plan on riding this weekend at Oak Mountain Park in Birmingham. Anyone up for that? I know it’d be a road trip for some of you…

in reply to: Looking for Riders in Blue Ridge GA #100834

I grew up in Blue Ridge. Graduated from Fannin in 96…….96? I think that’s right…I forget now. I live in Anniston AL now but often come up to Jasper to visit relatives. I really want to get back up to the Ridge and ride on Aska. Plus there are lots of good trails around there. I’ve done Ellijay a bunch on Bear’s Creek and Pinhoti, love em. Blanket’s Creek is a little further away in Woodstock but I’d love to do that one. Chilhowee (sp?) off River Rd is close too. I am not sure how it would work but if someone is organizing a group…I’d love to join in.
