    That’s awesome

welp, I got the Apex back together. New tires and brakes. Cleaned and re-lubed everything. I was able to salvage the thumb shifters as they are indestructible. I pull all of the cables out and lubed them and the inside of the cable housings using a gun cleaning trick. Re-fit everything and now it rides like a champ. He is happy with it. It took me a few hours but it was cool to kick back a few cold ones with the old man and show him a thing or two for a change. Now we just wait for the grips and new seat to get here and we are all done. https://goo.gl/photos/qxFM4oqusFYyQ1cBA

As you can tell my dad doesn’t like change. He bought that truck in the picture brand new when I was 4. Im now 33 and he is still driving it so trying to upgrade parts on the Apex was not happening. His motto: “If it isn’t broke don’t fix it”. Me, I cant keep a bike, motorcycle, or vehicle longer than a few years and I get bored but I digress.

Next on the list is this one for my mom:

I just do it for it fun. I’m going to start on them tomorrow and take some pictures. It’s a basic deal. They only want to get them up and running again and clean. I recently did a late 90s Trek series 6500. It needed everything but a bottom bracket and crank. He never rides It and I’m going to try and score that one off of him

I dont know where that is but if there are trails in the area check google for local shops. Most have some type of rental program where you get what you need.

I washed out running tubed at 50lbs. Converted to Tubeless at 50lb and reverse mounted and traction got way better. From there I tinkered with pressures  down to 35 found improvement. found that 25ish is my zone. The blocks bite well reversed. My rides are mainly half climb half decent at allatoona Creek, Blankets, Big Creek, Rope Mill, etc… I’ve basically been running trial by fire in corners I know.

Sounds like a cluster but it would hurt to check the indexing of your gears. May be an easy fix related to maintenance. I always start at the obvious and work up. Helps me to avoid throwing parts at something.

There is a butt for every seat. He is probably tagging an untapped market in his local area and will likely be successful. He is simply sourcing parts and building “his bike”. Not uncommon. This is where many riders, myself included, got started. My first was a BD bike from motobecane. It didn’t murder my budget and allowed me to learn at a minimal cost of entry and learn to work on my own stuff. I still have the bike and thrash it regularly. However I see your point. It Ingenuity and innovation are very expensive. I bet he gets an A I. His marketing class though!

It’s tough to give you a straight answer due many varying factors like personality, skill, intentions, end goal etc. I started much like you but have ended up doing a complete 180 and now spend all my time on trail trying to get as rowdy as possible.

I’ve read good things about the Maxxis. My LBS had the Pisgah on sale for $24.y bike came standard with TCS WTB rims so I was able to convert to tubeless for $75. I will likely try the Maxxis next though the Forte Pisgah are working well. Just couldn’t pass up the deal!

Thanks for responding Jeff. I measured wrong last night. I actually have 160mm plus rails and seat exposed. Soooo ill just insert post to achieve 160 at the top and enjoy the radness of my dropper. Amazing how clear things get when you take proper measurements.

I was just having this discussion yesterday. I bought a new FS rig and am now converting my hard tail into a pump track/ jumper. I’m leaning 1x on it and 2x on my XC. My first build so I’m researching. You guys have all made great points. I cant speak to the drivetrain question but as far as tires I am converting to tubeless. I want to do it to run lower pressure as I run many “soft” trails and loose rocky trails around here. I also don’t want to have to worry about tube issues. I will keep a spare tube and pump with me though just in case.
