Sounds just like a Marine….."Semfer Fi"

lol…Army, actually…that was a loooong time ago 😮 😃 Same principle applies, though…especially to MTBing or training of any sort. Here’s another old favorite: "Pain is weakness leaving the body". Not sure I ever believed that one… 😛

Back on-topic, I’ve found that pullups are one of the best total-body exercises you can do…they work your back, arms, core, and hip flexors (to some extent). They certainly kick my tail, that’s for sure. 😮

When I had to store mine outside years ago I used a plain blue tarp and bungie chords to secure it. It’s not pretty, but it kept the rain off of it. The only thing to watch out for is bugs (spiders, mostly) and rust; since the bike’s outside it’s going to attract a lot more rust. I didn’t ride for about 4 months and after that time outside I had to have all my cables replaced. Just something to watch out for.

I’ll hike (plenty of trails around me) or do body-weight exercises (pullups, pushups, dips, etc.) in my garage gym. I keep thinking about getting a road bike, but living in Oregon an MTB makes more sense, even for asphalt… 😮

in reply to: Helmet, full-face or traditional? #78466

Thanks for the great input and information, guys. Here’s my dilemma: not to toot my own horn, but my head’s pretty valuable. My wife has MS, and I there’s a lot I have to do for her…driving, helping her around, getting her to/from work, etc. I can’t take the chance on an injury that sidelines me (then why the hell am I mountain biking…? lol), so that’s where the appeal of the FF helmet comes in.

My LBS has the Deviant in my size (I tried it on) and I liked it…I might pop down there and give it a second look tomorrow after work. I’d rather be a safe dorky-looking XC rider than an injured cool-looking XC rider. 😃

I’m really happy to hear about the GoPro Hero; I was having a toss-up between this one and the Oregon Scientific ACT3K camera…looks like I’ll be going with the GoPro. 😃

I’ve got a new Venture HC that works really well; even with good tree-cover I haven’t had any problem with signal loss. The software could be better, but I use a Macbook, so there’s that…it’s getting better, though. But the unit itself is fantastic.

I was actually considering getting an Edge 205, but I’m not sure it’s worth it yet.

If a new guy can offer his $0.02 on the matter (a little late to the game, sorry), I personally can’t stand clipless pedals and wouldn’t trade my cages for anything. I’ve used them for 16 years and I can come out of them faster than I ever could with clipless pedals. My story: I dislocated my kneed badly in January of 2006 when I took a bad fall on a road bike with clipless pedals…I didn’t come out fast enough and landed smack on my left kneecap (horrible sound, excrutiating pain).

That being said, it’s a personal choice….my choice is to never use them because of that fear. I’d rather go endo (which I’ve also done) than wreck my knee again. My uncle, an Ironman competitor, uses nothing but clipless pedals and swears by them. To each their own…find what works best for you. 😀
