I live south of Seattle now but was stationed on NAS Whidbey as well. Check out Galbraith in Bellingham. It’s worth it to stop by Fanatik Bike Shop in Bellingham, get a map (The money goes back to the trails), and talk to the guys in the store about what trails to hit. As for Seattle, Duthie and Tiger Mountain are great trail networks and are pretty close. Check out https://www.evergreenmtb.org/ for more info and other trails. Just click on the “Trails” link for a map of the state and trailheads with more info and directions. Most states have a local MTB non-profit as well and although Singletracks, Trailforks, and MTB Project are amazing, sometimes they can’t compare to local sites. Have fun!

I had the SMALL/MED Raceface tailgate pad for my Toyota Tacoma and it was perfect, no complaints. Has velcro straps that connect to the downtube for really bumpy forest road shuttles, but the pad fits the bikes so securely, there’s no need to strap them down on paved roads. I recently purchased the new Ford Superduty, and got the LARGE Raceface pad. It’s amazing. There’s a velcro flap to access your tailgate latch and I cut that off so my rear facing camera still works perfectly. I haven’t tried yet, but I could easily carry 8 bikes with the LARGE pad. I did have six in the Tacoma on several occasions. It also has padded dividers so the bikes don’t fall into each other in sharp turns.

I originally picked up a nice thick horse blanket and used it for years. Only ran me about $25. Never had an issue. When Race Face came out with their pad though, I picked one up and love it. I leave it on when I ride (all over Washington State) and haven’t had any theft issues. I don’t know of any way to secure it but I’ve looked at all kinds of options without a solution. I sometimes leave a game cam locked to a tree and nicely hidden when I go on long hikes, and I’d prob do the same if I were on an all day MTB excursion.
