[quote="skibum"]If you’re already thinking of Santa Fe, I would encourage you to keep thinking that–it’s a wonderful place which has some great biking.
Agreed, Santa Fe has some amazing biking and the culture down there is wonderful. You won’t be disappointed with that choice!
If you’re looking into downhill biking I would recommend Winter Park, it has some of the best downhill trails in CO. The cross-country trails aren’t bad either 😃
We have had minimal rain in Grand County, trails are in good shape here.
Thanks for the report, I am going to add this to my list of "must rides" for next fall 😃
September 2, 2012 at 20:00 in reply to: Why electric bikes could be the next mountain biking #112259There is an older gentleman in our community that has an e-bike and it works great for him. Before he had that bike he would ride his mountain bike down to town and around the level area but he had to walk the mountain bike up the hill to his house. With the e-bike he now gets around with ease. That is the only reason I would see to own one of these bikes. If your healthy and young there is no reason to have one, get on a mountain bike and enjoy the health benefits of pedaling. 😃
Although this is a very short section in the national park it is part of a larger trail that will lead from Grand Lake to Winter Park, CO. It is also a much larger issue in that it will be a first of a kind trail in a national park. There is a questionnaire that the park service has developed asking about if mtn biking should be allowed on this trail. I think because this trail may be a first of a kind, Singletracks should consider doing an article about this and directing users to the site to fill out the questionnaire. We need as much support as we can get. I would be happy to give someone information about the history and the process to get to the questionnaire if you’re interested. Although this trail will be the only one permitted in Rocky Mountain National Park, it opens the door for more trails in other national parks!
I will have been working on this trail segment for nearly 10 years through our local trails organization / local government and can’t wait for next year when I get to actually ride it. Let me know if you want to do an article on this small but very important trail!
July 29, 2012 at 19:52 in reply to: National Park Service Announces Expanded MTB Opportunities #111016Here is an article about the new law and how Rocky Mountain National Park is considering a 3 mile section on the East Shore Trail. It states "There is one 3-mile stretch of trail in the park being considered for bike use, said Vaughn Baker, park superintendent. It runs along the east shore of Shadow Mountain Reservoir, on the Grand Lake side of the park".

Hope to be riding that trail in 2014!
July 22, 2012 at 16:09 in reply to: National Park Service Announces Expanded MTB Opportunities #111014Rocky Mountain National Park will be working on an Environmental Impact Statement this summer to allow for mountain bikes on about 3 miles of singletrack trail in Grand Lake, CO. We will need lots of support from the mountain biking community when the report comes out next spring so look forward to more information in the near future. 😃
I use an iphone for my gps tracks and it seems to do a good job. As Greg stated above, the accuracy is not perfect mostly because of the refresh rate (it’s faster on a gps unit) but it is good for what I want. I use the application "mapmyride" and it seems to be the best out there. As for battery life, I have had my iphone for one and half years and I am still getting about six hours of gps time before the battery dies.
"bulfers" wroteAnyone got any recomendations for some good trails within range of daytrip from Colorado Springs?
Come up to Grand County, we are only 3 hours away and you can get away from the heat and the smoke. Winter Park has the downhill resort trails and plenty of cross-country trails.
I own an Enduro and love the bike, it handles everything I throw at it. Now I also live in CO so it is a perfect bike for this terrain and I would guess it would be to much for back east. Just wanted to tell you the Enduro is a great bike just in case you are still looking at it.
Wow what a great trip. Enjoy and I look forward to reading more trip reports! 😛
@ ChuckJunkins – if your only looking to GPS your rides you don’t really need a mount. I keep my iphone in my pocket or in my camelback and it works perfect.
@randymclane – please submit a review once you try out the iphone video, I wonder how well it works and maybe will try it if you find success.Wow, I didn’t know about the lifetime membership deal, that is great. I will work on mapping some of those trails this summer.
It sure makes you wonder, if mountain bikes were around in 1964 when the wilderness act was introduced, would the language have been changed from no mechanized uses to just no motorized use.
It has been great to get such an early start to the riding season especially after the previous winter when we got dumped on until June.
We are going to develop two or three trailheads in the town (with a sign stating it’s trailhead parking 😃 ) and then signage would start from there and would follow the roads to the national forest. The major trailhead will be in the downtown and be about one mile from the national forest boundary. Signage would be installed all along the sidewalks leading through the residential neighborhoods to the forest service boundary. There are two roads that lead to the forest. We would also have signage leading to a private subdivision that has public trails as well.
It is exciting to see how much mtn biking is coming to the UP, when I lived there 10 years ago there were a lot of trails but they weren’t marked or advertised. Can’t wait to get back up there to ride one day!
The Winter Park area has some good riding although a lot of trails are not found on this website. If you go to http://www.playwinterpark.com/mbcusa-index.html they have maps and a list of some of the trails in the area. We are even snow free already this year! Have fun!
May 11, 2012 at 18:06 in reply to: Roads and trails in Grand County, CO to close temporarily #109067Thanks for posting this information Greg. Sad that I live here and didn’t think to post it on this website, glad you did.
The trail closures will be temporary and there are plenty of trails in the County that will remain open during the logging. Just call ahead and enjoy the trails. We are already snow free and ready to ride!!
I played on a recreational hockey league this winter and then started using loseit.com in early February and I am down from 210 to 195 and I am 6’1". Hope to lose another 10 pounds by mid summer. I can’t wait to get out riding and not have to carry that extra 15 pounds around 😃
loseit.com has really helped me understand how much food I can consume, I was consuming to much before 😆
