  • in reply to: Are all mtn bikers alcoholics? #106037

As a self diagnosed alcoholic, i found mtb’ing to be my replacement (actually all cycling). People have vices, no matter what the activity. So the answer to your question is NO! The difference as i see it is some ride to drink, some drink to ride. I see more drunks on fixies at the alleycats than I do on the trails.

This forum has a good map of the local trails. Only one "official" trail system ITP, thats at Morningside preserve, but thats only a couple miles. If you have strong lights, there is an ITP dirt ride tuesday nights at 830pm from Candler Park that hits a handful of unidentified singletrack. Also check out SORBA for some maps and suggestions.

well it certainly wasn’t 60! And even tho there was no rain, we were in the "clouds" most of the day.. And it was wet….. The creek was rideable and the last time the chain would be clean. That SOB snake was as vicious at it could be, but I sure enjoyed my day on the pinhoti. I have a 1×9 and coulda made it with a 1×3….I saw somewhere a dude ran a 38/21 singlespeed and broke 3 hours??

in reply to: IRA trail discussion #96155

we discussed that. As long as they (the county) knows we are using it, and accept the fact that the NA condones it, its all good. This is not big enough of a park to "draw" mtb’ers from OTP. Even if Mason Mill is connected by bridge, it’s still not quite enough. Well maybe it is, but the IRA entrance doesn’t really have any good spots to park. We now park on the bottom of Park Drive, but if there are 10-15 cars/trucks parked there on weekends, then the non users might start complaining. And we do not want any complaining. So now it looks like its just gonna be locals and dirty mustachers. The NA was not aware of what SORBA did at Morningside. I suggested they go over and check it out. But they do not want any parking lots.

in reply to: Best mountain bike trails in the midwest? #75600

its a little late, but CAMBA in Wis is by far the biggest trail system. Copper Harbor in da UP is the most gnarly, even epic. Other great trails are in the Kettle Moraine, both North and South sections. Nine Mile is a sweet spot in central Wis. On the Lakeshore, Kewaunee has some killer trail. Trails around Madison are pretty cool, too, as that is glacial terrain.

in reply to: IRA trail discussion #96153

It was a most excellent meeting on the trails at IRA. This park has some private property on it, but 90% of it is county land. The two neighborhood Associations nearest the park have "control" of the property. (Clairemont Heights / Medlock). Walkers are a little confused with the maze of back and forth the trails have become. The proposal is to add a "blazed" walking trail, pretty much straight back to the river, then continuing in a counter clockwise. There is a proposed bridge closed to the water works / new water tower that will connect MM & IRA. Does anyone have a GPS view of the trails that can be posted?? The "highground" section was discussed and all were very pleased what has been built there. Charles from SORBA was blown away by what we have out there. He had the handy IMBA trail solution book that he gave to the NA after referencing it at every concerned sectinon. After the meeting I took him through IRA/MM/POT. He suggests we open the dialog with Mason Mill again to get official status. Every trail was expertly built and very sustainable. We’all should be proud!!

Sram seems to be cutting into shimano’s market recently. I recently went with a Sram 1×9 setup after 6 years of SSing. LOVE IT!! Flawless.

good to see you into cycling….I would suggest riding the DB until you are sure you enjoy it, then upgrade the complete ride. Turn the Rockhopper into a singlespeed. Use the DB for guests or rainy /muddy days.

in reply to: Single Speed Vs. Geared Debate! #95109

It depends on your location. ANY bike can be ridden anywhere, but certain terrain will favor that certain bicycle. I love SS simplistic ride, but gears are more practical in the Mts.

If you are in a position to fine someone for there inappropriate bike skills, that will make the most impact. I would like to see more "trail heads" host clinics about how to ride and NOT ride. Posted rules are only 50% helpful.

in reply to: Snake TT #1 is this weekend! #94193

it was a most gorgeous day! First time in the mountains for me, and it did not disappoint. Logistics and volunteers were spectacular! I thought the first 1/2 was harder than the second, rockier half. The scenery prevented me from "racing", but now that I know what to expect, I can ride it a bit different. I did a 4:51 for the 34. When I finished, I set my bike down and had some chili and cobbler (yum). When i went to change into warm clothes, I had a flat tire. Talk about timing!!
