When I first got my 29er, the hub got loose after only a month of riding, causing a slight rubbing on the frame. That sounds like the most likely scenario to me.
Well, it has been a little more than a year since I started this post, and 29ers are the hands down favorite among singletracks riders (according to the poll). I believe that the inherent value and benefits of a 29er speak for themselves, but it is great to see that so many others feel the same way. A riding buddy of mine has done the math, with a 29er vs. a 26er; the 29er has a "long legs" advantage of 18 inches. That means, that when I’m in gear 2,5, and he’s in gear 2,5, I’m going 18 inches farther under the same gear ratio. That is probably why the 29er is yet to be on the olympic stage. There is just too much of an advantage. Not to mention all of the other great rolling benefits. Thanks to everyone who has contributed their thoughts and opinions on the subject. 😃
I really like crank brothers egg beater and mixer. Both are great choices for your first clipless pedal setup.
I use the shockproof, waterproof, Olympus 1030 sw. 10.1 megapixels, small and light weight. A great camera, I highly recommend it.
In my opinion, tubes are as outdated as rim brakes. If you like pinch flats, heavier weight, and less traction; use tubes!!
Alot of guys in the Alabama, Georgia area like the ignitor in front and the maxxis crossmark in back. With 29ers, in my opinion, tubeless is a must. I like both crossmarks as well. They are light and still give good traction/cornering. As far as the wheels, stans ztr are pretty sweet.
I have them on one of my bikes, and LOVE them!! I would have them on both bikes, but they are kinda pricey. I had alot of numbness and pain in my hands on long rides, now that is no more! I highly recommend them.
I would agree with brianw, by avoiding heavily trafficked trails in the rain. Here in Alabama we have fewer riders and less erosion. Over in Georgia, there has been alot of erosion on some popular trails, and some even close when it rains. The key is to check with local imba/singletracks websites, and use good judgement. 😉
My turn.
I ride 1 to 2 times per week, and my resolution is lose like 50 pounds. So to reach this goal, I need to ride ALOT more and eat healthier.It seems that lately I have been riding more in the rain and wet conditions, than in the dry. So for me, the most important thing from a maintenance standpoint is to dry everthing thoroughly after the ride, then re-lube the chain. You want to make sure that no metal parts rust. Other than that, your fine to enjoy riding rain or shine.
I have ridden blankets creek, oak mountain, raccoon mountain, tsali and many other Alabama and georgia trails. Of the ones mentioned, I really like raccoon mountain the best. The others are great trails, but raccoon mountain has all of the things that I look for in a great trail system. It has tech features, great views, and lots of fun!!
I have your same bike, and I think you got an amazing deal. I bought mine in jan. of this year at full price. I live and ride in northeast AL. The terrain here is perfect for the fisher. A really good improvement you can make to the fisher is a new set of maxxis crossmark tires w/stans tubeless setup. You wil save a ton of weight and lower rolling resistance. Enjoy your new ride!!

I have the HIFI too and I love it!! I would definitely recommend it. Also, have you considered a 29er? Its the future of XC riding, and will give you a big riding advantage on technical xc trails.
One that is really ironic/coincidental is "Freshies" (Keller Williams). It is written as a Ski anthem but it works for biking too!

Beaker, It’s testimonials like that, that really show how 26ers are inferior to 29ers. If the founder/godfather of mountain biking believes in the 29er; So should you! http://www.fisherbikes.com 😎 (by the way, I’m just kidding) 😉
It could be a tire pressure issue. I have noticed that I lose a little bit of control with a higher pressure (above 37lbs). This is especially true with low tread profile XC tires.
If I were you, I would look at the equivalent gary fisher bike. The GF Marlin is a better buy for the money. The main differences are the G2 geometry and great looks of the marlin. http://www.fisherbikes.com
I have two fishers myself, and if I were you I would look for a 2008 x-cal or other high end 29er on an end of year closeout sale. If you can’t get a break on any good 29ers, I would definitely say that the Hoo Koo E Koo is your best bike in that price range. Happy hunting 😃 .
