in reply to: What keeps you from riding in the winter? #229545

This year I made a commitment to rider all winter. The trick is to have the appropriate clothing. I noticed that I tend to OVER dress. Its a work in progress. But so far so good

I wear $9.00 DeWalt safety glasses. I bought them as a temporary replacement when my wife “Borrowed” my $125.00 Wiley x pair. They work just fine. I still wear them. They look good and if I break or lose them its no big deal.

in reply to: 27.5 MTB Inner Tube ?'s #228168

I went tubeless this year. Best move I have done for my bike. But before that I would just go into my MTB shop and get whatever tube they had on the shelf. Like Treating said they are all about the same.

If you buy a crappy bike your experience will be the same. Maybe try looking for a leftover 16 or 17 at your local bike shop. (LBS). Also ask them about their rentals. Many bike shops will rent out MTBs and sell them at the end of the season. I would talk with a good MTB shop and ask for help. Make sure they are a mountain bike type shop. We have a rail trail family fun bike shop in our town. They are super nice guys but they dont know jack about mountain bikes.

I would start with a good used hard tail and a decent fork (airshock) If you like mountain biking you will quickly go to a new bike instead of upgrading a used bike. If you dont like mountain biking sell the used bike and you are not out a lot of money.

I judge my speed and danger zone by my gut (and toes). When I go down a trail at speed if I am going to fast for my ability I know it right away. My toes and gut tingles. Sounds weird but I know when to back off. I have ignored those warning signs a couple of times. Got lucky a few times with only a OMG I can believe I did that..and Ouch what an idiot. A couple of things have helped me. I put a dropper post and that has increased my speed on tricky downhills. (Pushed the tingle back a little) But also know that wrecking is learning. Push that envelope and relish the tingle!!

    Old Dude still riding!

Life is way to short to be in a job you hate. If this is your passion send out the resumes. See where it goes. Dont look back or hesitate if you get an offer. Good Luck. Im a 54 year old and as I look back on my life there are times I had the opportunity but not the courage. Just do it.
