So I made it up to stonewall/white twister today and enjoyed it. Had to do a little bit of backpedaling on Stonewall but no big deal. My question to you all is do you see a lot of bears there? I felt like I smelled bear pee quite a few times on the trail, also saw some areas on the sides of the trails that bears have dug out. White Twisters got a lot of blueberry bushes which usually equals lots of bears. Just curious as I generally ride by myself and it made me a little nervous.

Good to know, maybe I will give it a shot.

I am famililar with White Twister and Stonewall Falls near Tiger, but I have heard they can be pretty tough to follow unless you have someone with you who knows them. What do you all think. Is there a decent map somewhere?

Did you consider getting a Giant Trance X2, that is a XC bike that has 5 or 6 in. of travel on the front shock. Great for XC and Downhill. I have an Trance X3 and it has been awesome. Its held up great for the first year and its saved me from wrecking hard on some downhills. I believe the Giant you looked at before is designed more for downhill than XC.

Once fall hits you should go to DeSoto National Forest just North of Biloxi, Mississippi. Great natl. forest with some old longleaf pine forest, 20 or so miles of trails and if your lucky you may get to see a rattlesnake!

I appreciate all of your input and am definately leaning towards the Giant.

Leppah, I wouldn’t mind the Reign, but I do not need quite that much travel.

I have to agree that you will get your most bang for your buck if you buy a used bike off of craigs list or something of the sort. When I started riding about 4 yrs. ago I couldn’t affor more than $300 so I bought a Trek with no suspension at all. Big mistake on my part, as I got about 6 months into riding it the bike fell apart and I ended up having to suck it up and buy a $600 Marin Hawk Hill. It worked great for me for awhile. I was able to upgrade many of the components and I still ride it now. In more recent times I am starting to break some of the components that have not been replaced and am getting sick of putting money into it. Therefore I am going to blow my tax return and bonus on a much better bike.

Another idea is to check around for your bike stores for 2008 models and sometimes even 2007 models, these are excellent brand new bikes that occasionally can be purchased for a fraction of the cost that they were brand new.

    Anyways, good luck!
