I’d give craigslist a look & see if you can find a good used bike. You may be able to find one of the previously mentioned brands (iron horse, diamondback, jamis, etc.) at a good price. Good luck!
I’ve got a Gary Fisher Marlin (hardtail) and I absolutely love it. I’m not sure if the more-experienced riders on this forum would consider this entry-level or not. IMO, Fisher makes a really good bike, and it worked well for my budget. Hope this helps.
how much are you looking to spend?
I’m in east-central illinois and it was about -18 when i came into work this morning. i think the high yesterday was around 0.
I think Gary Fisher makes a pretty good frame, too. I don’t have experience with many other frames, but I really like my fisher for the xc stuff I ride.
Do you have any problems with them slipping? Is the main benefit of lock-on grips the ease of replacing them down the road? How do you secure non lock-on grips? Thanks again.
RIDE MORE!!!
Thanks a lot for all the info…it’s a huge help.
Don’t think I’m quite brave enough to try the install, but it’s good to know they’re not that involved to install.Just filled it out & submitted. Hope this helps.
I agree with the Gary Fisher recommendation. I was in your position not too long ago and I went with the GF Marlin and absolutely love it. I also recommend AGAINST the Marlin Disc. The discs it comes with are mechanical, rather than hydraulic…so in my opinion, you’re better off going with the v-brakes (which are really good quality on the marlin) & saving to get a good set of hydraulic discs later on. Also, the Marlin comes with disc-ready hubs, so the upgrade should be much easier. Hope this helps. Good luck.
Thanks a lot for the help. I’ll have to check these out.
