I would certainly tell you to go with the Trek. It looks like that GT is a sporting goods store bike. Meaning it’s better than a department store and might be put together better as well. With the Trek you’ll get a bike that not only has frame size options, was built by people who know what they are doing but also you’ll probably get some sort of service package with it.

I would recommend a LBS. They will look over everything be able to tell you if something major is wrong with the bike. They might catch a crack or a part the is failing that you might not know about. They will also be able to determine is things like the chain, cables, housing and even brake pads are still in good shape/not worn. It is always a good idea to have a shop do a safety check on any used bike or after a crash.

You cannot swap a XO cage with anything but another XO cage or this: https://www.garbaruk.com/rear-derailleur-cage-for-sram-10-speed.html.

I often ride my Felt DD30 instead of my full squish. It is an aluminum frame with  rigid carbon fork. It has 45Nrth 26 x 4.0 Van Helgas that grip to everything. Normally if I know I want to go full send on a trail I don’t know well I’ll take the fatbike to it first.

Hey I own two Felt bikes. I have a full suspension XC 29er carbon Edict and a DD30 fatbike. Both bikes have been great for me. I have have the full suspension for about 4 years and it has been able to take everything I throw at it. The fatbike plows over everything. I do wish they made a 29er with more than 100mm of travel though.

I say grips, saddle and pedals were the first upgrades for me. If your not comfortable on the bike it won’t matter if it grips to the trail.

It might be worth checking these guys out: https://www.garbaruk.com/rear-derailleur-cage-for-sram-11-speed.html They make replacement cages for both 11 and 12 speed Sram derailleurs. Not to mention they come in colors!

My cross country rig. It’s a 2015 Felt Edict 3. Full carbon frame using Felt’s FAST suspension. There is no rear pivot, the carbon frame is designed to flex. This pic is from last summer. It’s full XT now. 1×11 with One-Up’s Shark 11-50 conversion. 34 tooth Absolute Bike chainring. Hope Pro 2 hubs laced to Stan’s rims w/ DT swiss butted spokes. Continental Trail King 2.2 up front and Mountain King 2.2 rear. Upgraded to a Rock Shox Monarch RT3 rear shock. Loaded Precision stem and seatpost. RaceFace Turbine handlebar. Specialized Rival SL that has moved from more than one bike.
