if your rear suspension is a rockshox then there is a little dial on it that has a rabbit or a turtle on it, turn it more towards the rabbit for a faster response, and that may help with climbing. i am unsure what the dial looks like on a fox, but it would operate the same way i’d think. and if it has a lockout, maybe switch it when you begin to go uphill.

i used to have a 1999 mustang and used one of the trunk mount ones from walmart, i had to take my front wheel off because it put my bike at a steep angle. it wasn’t ideal, but it worked and was secure. i used it for about a year. i took it off after each time of using it. i no longer have that car anymore though.

all of the advice i get from people as far as visiting mexico is stay inside the cities, venturing out on side trails and stuff could be the last thing you ever do. there are cartels down there that love to kidnap americans and sell them back to their own governments or hold them for ransom or kill them. it’s in the news all the time.

in reply to: Clipless SPD Pedal Suggestions #125249

I have the nashbar singletrack clipless pedals, they were $29. I really like them, they are simple to use and aren’t huge.

in reply to: advice for clipless pedals #124961

I was afraid of going clipless, so what i did was put them on my road bike and kept platforms on my mtb. so i rode a ton of miles and got used to clipping in and out, and then switched the clipless pedals to my mtb and put about 200 miles on it to get used to the feel of it. i took my 29er to an mtb park and just went for it clipped in. i got some knee pads and just sucked it up and did it. i only fell once, and that was because i didn’t have enough momentum at the top of a climb. other than that, i did almost seven miles of somewhat technical singletrack and fast berms and small logs, and also some bridges and stuff. in my opinion, being clipped in made my ride much more enjoyable, and made climbing way easier. was a lot of fun, and i am glad that I made the switch.

I went to nashbar to get my pedals, I got the nashbar singletrack pedals, they were only $29, and that site has sales all the time. I got a pair of Pearl Izumi’s on ebay. they were lightly used, but I got them for a steal at only a little over $20. You pedals will come with cleats, so you don’t have to buy them separately.

You can adjust the tension on them the lightest setting, which makes them easier to get in and out of. While I was at the park I ended up having to tighten them up because I was having a difficulty "finding" the pedal upon startup. Once I adjusted it, it was easier to clip in.

It was kinda scary at first, but I got over it right away and it just seemed more natural.

    Lots of fun.

in reply to: Washington State Trails for kids / families #124496

There is a paved trail that loops around Lake Washington. My buddy and I rode part of the loop from Kirkland to the Udistrict. It’s plenty wide for two way traffic, and it is nice and smooth. As for MTB trails to check out, there is Duthie Hill in Sammamish, it’s a MTB park with all sorts of things to do there. There are beginner trails that get more technical and difficult. DH, freeride and jumps and stuff too. It has pretty much everything there. I saw lots of children there last time I was there, and people weren’t going super fast on the beginner trails, so your children can get used to the trail without having to worry about getting smashed. Everyone seemed to be pretty cool there. All of the trails are one way, so you don’t have to worry about people coming straight on to you, so you can cruise pretty good once you get your confidence up.

    that is great news!

in reply to: Best Shoes For Platform Pedals? #120843

I picked up a pair of 5-ten freeriders for my platforms the other day. I do not yet have the courage to ride the trails clipped in. (i ride my roadie clipped in though) After I use them I will update.

Not sure I follow; why do you need a new crankset for a 9 speed cassette? Are you going to a 1×9?

currently my bike has a 7 speed cassette. Would I need to get a crankset that mates up with a 9 speed cassette or would I be able to continue to use the one that I currently have and just put a 9 speed cassette on my wheel? I ordered a derailleur to replace the one that I just got, so that goes is compatible for a 7, 8, or 9.

It isn’t really that easy is it? I thought it would be more difficult.

i actually found some Avid BB7 mechanical disc brake package for inexpensive and installation instructions, now just to see what the scoop is on the hub and wheel.
