in reply to: What Maxxis tires do you recommend for Moab? #256225

I will have to say I use minion SS on rear and dhf on the front.  That is pretty much my go to, as it even works really well here in Colorado springs.

in reply to: What's your relationship with tubeless tires? #251029

For me it is defiantly a love hate relationship.  I have set them up long enough it is a breeze, and love the fact about pinch flats and thorns and so on.  My one problem is I can’t seem to run them low enough as I have a tendency to punch holes straight through the center tread even at 30 psi on the rear tire.

    in reply to: Moab…yes another ? #246379

I will have to say that I ride both flat and clipless but generally lean towards clipless for every thing.  I have ridden in moab plenty of times and use clipless every time.

Now to answer the question about what makes moab different as to which to use, generally is because of the risk as a lot of trails have some pretty good exposure.  That is especially true for the black and double black trails. This is simply because there are times you might need that foot down really fast since you are on a cliff edge.

    Anyways hope this helps.

in reply to: XT Brakes Don't Work #240691

I have had this happen with several brakes not just xt. The cause for me was being dumb when i bleed them and got a bit of oil on the pads. It doeant take much to oil to contaminate the pads and once this is done they will squeal like crazy and have no power. Depending on how bad they are contaminated sometimes they will get cooked clean over time but in other cases they dont. I suspect a similar thing happened with the previous owner of thise brakes.

in reply to: 27.5 wheel question? #240189

So there are few things to think about for tire width. First it is the internal dimension of you rim that dictates what the max size tire you can run is. The last thing is while the fork can generally run fairly wide tires your rear is more limited. Especially if you have a front derailleur.

in reply to: riding park and natural trails in Colorado in july? #236512

All the parks in July should be open.  Like it was mentioned already thunderstorms happen constantly during the summer especially in the mountains.  As for bike parks one of the bigger ones is winter park.  As for heat it depends where you are to what you can get, higher up generally the cooler it will be, so for Crested Butte you’ll be looking at some where in the 70’s.  Hope this helps, if you have any other questions let me know.

in reply to: 1×9 to 1×11 drivetrain conversion #231833

Lol ikr, there’s a few uphill sections at trestle that drive me nuts.

in reply to: 1×9 to 1×11 drivetrain conversion #231830

Lol hey I got a 10 speed on my park bike, too many pedally sections.

in reply to: 1×9 to 1×11 drivetrain conversion #231821

Are you wanting to change cranks for the conversion, as you could just keep the saints and get a narrow wide chain ring from some one like race face and then upgrade the rear cassette with what ever 11 speed you decided on. Obviously you’ll have to upgrade the derailleur, chain, and shifter as well. Personally I love sram so I would go with the gx, but be careful because the 11 speed gx needs the hd driver on the freehub since they all have the 10 tooth on them, so if you can’t or don’t have the hd drive then go with shimano.

in reply to: Mountain Lions #225072

They are all over the place where I live, but rarely give them much of a thought.  I will say that I occasionally wonder how many of them have just watched me go by.  I also have a bear bell on my trail bikes but that is more for hikers than anything else.

in reply to: Downhill – What to Expect #222465

I do lots of Downhill riding and I will say that those bikes are a bit different than your everyday travel bike.  With that said if you arent actually riding at a dh park I would stick with a trail bike as any bit of up hill can be a pain on the dh bike.  Now if you are talking less than a hundred feet climbing on the trails then sure a dh bike could be a blast for the harder trails.  Just keep in mind as Jeff said, it will take a bit to get use too as they ride differently.  Be prepared to bash a few pedals until you figure out when you can pedal.

    in reply to: 120 psi with 20% sag…more like 50% #218847

Ah yea that would make sense.  Lol, hey we all have those days.  Good old learning curve. At least you didn’t do a mistake like my dad and take his rear shock apart under pressure

    in reply to: 120 psi with 20% sag…more like 50% #218825

Yea for a fork I very much doubt that.  I have several different types and none are no where near a max of 210 (with the exception of the talas being close).  Now for a rear shock that is possible for many and there is a fox float rear shock but i believe they are even higher than that.  Personally, I would trust the manufacture for max psi as they are the ones that made it.  However, with your issue I usually have the opposite problem.  I like stuff plush, and usually run my shocks well under what the sticker says for my weight.  I,m at 200 lbs and run my for at 52 psi, which gives me a sag of just a hair over 25%.  Rear is similar in that i run it lower than what they say for my weight and run at 120.  How are you checking your sag. What I mean by that what are you doing on the bike.  Here is a good video on setting the sag GMBN

in reply to: Do you ride with a bell? #216829

Well I think the bell is more meant to let the beer know you are there so you don’t startle it as that is when they are more likely to attack.  However though, that is a pretty interesting point.  I havent seen any bears on the trail, but I did run across a bobcat which is as skittish as it comes to wildlife and it didn’t bother him much.  Not sure what would happen and hope not to find out.

in reply to: Do you ride with a bell? #216817

I have alot of blind corners where i live so i always use one.  However i use bear bells since they are always going.  Thought they would be annoying and I wouldn’t see wildlife, but it doesn’t seem to bother wildlife and I have gotten use to them and tuned them out.

in reply to: Best shoes for platform pedals #216816

I own several pairs, both clipless and none.  They stick like crazy to the pedals and are great for the hike a bike parts as they stick to the rocks as well.  As far as price goes, you can easily get deals on them.  Five ten’s website has close outs that are a lot cheaper and are still brand new shoes.  Prices range anywhere from about 49 to 70 dollars.  A few are a little higher but that is the general range for close outs.

Pikes peak is about to get even longer when they add the new missing link trail to extend barr trail even further down to the chutes if im not mistaken

in reply to: Types of Bash Guards #216039

I will say on my trail bikes i dont run one, but on my downhill i run the mrp g3 chain guide.  It works very well and they have either steel or carbon to cut down on some of the weight.  Just to be clear it is a chain guide but does have a bash guard at the bottom

Nice vid, I rode that trail last year and man it was a blast
