September 21, 2017 at 17:56 in reply to: Mountain biking at night: What questions do you have? #225337It’s all about the spider eyes glowing at you as you ride along….I learned that was what we were seeing last Tuesday. Awesome stuff. I have a cheap Chinese light on my helmet. I never charge the battery unattended. The light has been flawless and its bright. I have a Bontrager 700 lumin on the bar. One thing Ive learned is the bar light and the helmet light should be the same “color” I have a riding buddy that has the same set up but his Chinese light on the helmet is a different color than the bontrager on his bar. When i mention color I’m talking about the light beam color. Not sure if it causes him problems or not but it is noticeable.
September 13, 2017 at 17:00 in reply to: Searching for a new tracker/watch/heart rate monitor #225065I use a garmin vivosmart. It was a good value at the time I bought it. I would buy it again if something happens to this one. It has worked flawless for me and I like the features. I have it on most all the time. For MTB i use it as a heart rate monitor and start a new “activity” right when i get going. The “activity” keeps the heart rate in the screen so a quick glance gives me the information I want. The screen is modifiable so you can configure what you want to see on the “home” screen for the various activities. I’m not sure the accuracy but it gets me close enough to know when to back off a little or just stop and take a quick break. I’m 53 ride like I’m 25 at times and don’t need no issues with the ole ticker while out riding.
Drive a couple hours on south down 81 to Roanoke and ride the Carvins Cove trail system. The trails are awesome.

I use to wash my bike like a car. I figured that if i can ride through creeks and mud my water hose cant hurt a thing. Well it started to creek and pop I took to the shop. $120.00 later the pops and creeks were gone and I had a lesson in cleaning my bike. Water hose has not touched my bike since! I bought a nice set of brushes to knock the mud off and a damp rag after that. I also use Maxxima SC1 on the places more likely to get muddy. If any thing sticks to those spots it falls right off with minimal effort.
I like my G-form they even provide a bit of compression.
I am fortunate to have a truck with the keypad entry. I just lock the keys in the cab and go on. I always do this not just when riding. Center right right center left ha!
Wife and I were riding and was taking a short stretch of fire road to the next trail. We ran across a young lady riding a Hello Kitty “mountain bike” that was obviously from a big box store. Her helmet, shirt, shorts and socks were all Hello Kitty. We talked with her and she asked how far to a boat launch. It was a solid 7 miles on the fire road that gets more and more hilly as you go. It was summer time and she had one water bottle. She took an uber to the trail head (fire road) and was going to uber at the other end.
Hello! I am a hard rock/metal head! Pop Evil, Amon Armoth, Shamans Harvest, Avenged Sevenfold, In This Moment, Slipknot ..the list can go on and on…I never listen while riding though messes my concentration so before and after a ride always! However I shoved the headphones in my ears one time a year or so ago while riding. There was this one switchback I just couldn’t get through no matter how I tried it. This time i made it like a champ as I was coming out the other side Slipknot was hammering in my ears the vocals went “a long time ago we discovered nothing could stop us…..” damn what a moment. Any other 50ish metal head mountain bikers out there?
Report: nice ride today 1,631 feet climb according to strava….hard crash on last sweet downhill trail called “The Gauntlet”. I got kind of careless, was going to fast over some ass kicking rocks could not get slowed down. I began to get a little off balance on the bike. Trying to catch my balance, brake and stay on the trail my shoulder busted a tree. Tree did not move, I went over …handle bars got the ribs and the ground got my hip/butt. Got up made sure nothing was broke or bleeding checked bike, bike survived. I’m a bit sore but licking my wounds with a cold beverage!
Completely cleaned yesterday using some SC1 for the first time. Almost hate to ride my bike looks so good. Today i go to Carvins Cove do some climbing
Lots of quality trails, safe parking, and a good place to camp close by if traveling. A good local brewery is a plus and some good places to eat near by.
