Some of this land has been preserved through the national monument declaration, but some of the woodlawn land is still being considered for retail and residential development. There is a petition to stop it and more information available through here: https://www.change.org/petitions/save-t … ord-twp-pa
I always get turned around when I ride there but I think the area in PA that is slated for development includes the trails around the vineyard for those familiar with the area.
Good news. Just scored another Karate Monkey off ebay within my budget. Going to have a happy happy brother 😀
I’d stick with steel, but I’m a relatively heavy guy (~220 lbs) and might need the support. I did talk myself into my first aluminum bike (cyclocross) last year, and its’ been good but I’m not sure I’d like it as much on a mountain bike. I ride rigid though, suspension would alleviate a lot of my concerns about aluminum frames.
I’ve only test-ridden some of the more exotic frames, and they felt a bit too flimsy for my liking. But if I didn’t have the extra pounds I probably would have loved them.
"fleetwood" wroteStop all the bickering fellas. The man just lost his bike!
I have a hitch-mount rack and I’ll admit there have been times when I feared this was going to happen. My first thought was not about me or my truck, but my bike. Fortunately, there have been no incidents.
@ jamis29er — glad to hear no one was hurt and I hope you are made whole when all is said and done.
This is my worst nightmare! I drive ten times more carefully when there’s a bike on back.
Getting a new bike is always fun, but I don’t think it ever offsets losing the old one.
Good to know, thanks. I don’t even know what my Surly weighs (maybe I should find out, just to get a frame of reference).
I was poking around on BikesDirect and it appears the GT Peace and SE Stout would also meet my needs.
Great info, thanks! He’s ridden both my mountain bikes (a surly karate monkey SS and a 15 year old trek 930) on moderately technical singletrack, and in talking to him I don’t think he actually wants gears/suspension on his ride. We’re planning to take a 4-5 day camping/biking trip early next summer, and the less moving parts to break down out there the better.
I’m holding out hope that I can find a good deal on a karate monkey frame and build it up for him on the cheap (maybe scoring some upgrades for mine along the way 😉 ) but it’s good to know the redline is a viable option if I can’t.
The diamondback does look like a good deal, but I don’t know a lot about their frames. I’d prefer to put the money into a quality frame that he can upgrade than all the bells and whistles, especially considering the abuse he’ll be putting it through shortly after I give it to him (after he graduates from college in May).
