Thank you for the help, you can officially trash this thread if feel the need.

I only see the “edit” option once I first submit the post. Once I click off of it and come back the edit option is gone.

Thank you Jeff. I will do that. How do you go about getting them to show up in the thread? With the image link on the ribbon above? Put the URL there? Also, was there not a way to edit a post in a thread, thought that option was beside the reply? Is it a timed?

    Giant Bike Build

Does anybody see the link? Does it work?

in reply to: One Giant Rehab #236132

Please delete this thread. I was going to share my build but photobucket now wants 100 dollars a year to host photos and frankly I don’t use the website near enough. If somebody knows elsewhere to hose photos from a much better deal please let me know.

    Sorry for the trouble.

    Thank You!

That was a sweet video. This is the reason I am building the bike I am. To explore and ride different terrain than my local MTB trails. I have all sorts of forest service roads, long winding gravel roads mixed with pavement and remote beautiful places to ride.

in reply to: What was your first mountain bike? #234738

Mine was a 1992 Raleigh Heat, bought at the local bike shop. It was completely rigid when I bought it, I later put a Rockshox Quadra on it.  I also upgraded the bike to clipless pedals back in the day and that was a total game changer. Both in the way I rode and how I wrecked. LOL..

I sold the bike about 15 years ago, I know the owner still. I have tried to buy it back but he won’t sell it… I just want it for sentimental reasons.

My dream bike that I would go by and look at every other week was a Raleigh John Tomac. That thing was baaad!

in reply to: Building a Cyclecross/Adventure Bike #234494

Thanks for the advise… I may end up switching over to a 2x drive train, but for now I am going to run a 1x and see how I like it.

I used Wolftooths website when I was thinking (still thinking) through gear ratio. I could almost go 11×40 or 11×42, if I thought my derailleur could handle that much chain difference. Both Sunrace and Microshift make 11×42 and 11×40 rear cogs.

    https://www.wolftoothcomponents.com/pages/1x-gravel-setup

Just talking out loud, I can make a X9 short cage work on a 11×40, I would think I should be able to get a mid cage to work on a 11×40 or 11×42… hmm…

So if I run a 1×42 up front to a 11×40 in the rear then I would line up very close to the 4th line on the graph on the link above. Hmm…

    So many options.

in reply to: new tires #234342

I am currently riding Maxxis Ardents on a Hardtail. I like them OK. Good tires for my area in East Tennessee. They seem to work well on packed clay dirt, loose rock and slick mud. Not so well in sandy areas.

Prior I had Bontrager Team Issue XR3’s. Really liked those tires, probably more so at this time than the Maxxis Ardent.

Prior to that I had Kenda Small Block 8s. Not a bad tire, wore well. But the tight pattern allowed them hold dirt and mud easy.

in reply to: What to Buy: Old and beefy or New and Rigid? #220741

When I had maxed out my 600 dollar hardtails ability I decided it was time to upgrade as well. I looked at a lot of entry level full suspension bikes by GT, Giant, Specialized, etc. The price for what I was getting vs. what components it was outfitted with and the weight of the bike didn’t seem to be a huge upgrade. So I took my money and put into upgrading my hardtail. I took my 1000+ dollars and completely rebuilt it from the ground up. Not one thing besides the frame is original to the bike. I have made a few tweaks in the last few years to the original rebuild like going to a 1×10 drive train, which I have loved, but in the end I felt like I ended up with a really good bike.

in reply to: Looking for a new tire #220416

I have tried posting the pics three times. Twice they momentarily showed up only for the whole post to disappear.

I have ran them at 30 because that was the lowest recommended pressure on the tire. They are currently at 28.. they have a slow bleed. I usually bump them up to 30 before I ride and they are usually a little under when I finish.

They are XR3 Team Issue… They have hooked up well for how I ride. They have offered plenty of traction and been a good climbing tire. Where my Small Block 8’s before would break traction on roots and rocks these will hold their grip more times than not. They also shed mud and debris better. My only concern is the cracking of the rubber between the tread. There is some life left in the tread but not much. They are a soft rubber compound tire, at least that is what the LBS told me when I bought them.

I guess I am looking to change again to see what else is out there, and if I like something else better.

in reply to: Looking for a new tire #220317

I will take a look into the Maxxis.. What I have done with my last two sets of tire is run the same size 2.2  w/ matching tires and rotate them at 500ish miles. I am possibly looking at running a mixed set with a dedicated front and rear tire. I like the idea of riding the same size and style tire on the front and rear so I can rotate them and extend the life of the tire.

I don’t do much dedicated downhill but get after the XC trails pretty hard.

I have looked at the Minion DHF and DHR online. Those are a good looking tire, pretty aggressive.

I have also read good reviews of the Crossmark.

I have read good things about the Continental X king and Race King. Running a 2.4 X King up front with a 2.2 Race King in the back.

After crunching numbers and looking at my riding log I am probably between 900 and 1000 miles on the Bontragers. They came highly recommended from my LBS.

I will post pictures later of the tires. Most of the time I run them at 30 psi. I way 155 pounds and they are tubeless.

in reply to: If I knew then… #220086

Take your helmet, and if you forget it… go back and get it.

When biking on unfamiliar trails or areas you are not comfortable with, plan plenty of time to ride. Don’t take out on trails you don’t know late in the afternoon… you might be riding back in the dark…lol

in reply to: Dealing with flying insects when biking #220020

Just chase them down with water from by Camelback and consider it protein. Living in the Southeast it is just something I cope with. I agree stopping for a minute can be aggravating as it seems your are instantly attacked.  I do rub down with Avon’s skin so soft bug repellent line on some trips. Especially long ones where I will take breaks along the way. Seems to help with biting insects… not so much with knats.

in reply to: Shimano Vs. SRAM Drivetrain? #194231

I rode Shimano for years and never gave it another thought. Had friends that rode SRAM. So this past winter I switched over to a 1×10 set up with SRAM shifter and rear derailleur. I am not sure I will ever go back to Shimano. Like said above the shifting is crisper and in general seems smother and tighter. I have loved the change over. Just my 2 cents. I run a N/W raceface crank and front chain ring 30 tooth. I don’t use a chain guide and have not needed one after almost 500 miles this year. I run this setup on a hardtail.

in reply to: 1x Drivetrain conversion – Dangerous? #192357

I switched from a 3×9 to a 1×10 this past year. I went with a 30 up front with a 11-42 in the rear. The 30 is bit too small for my liking, as the 30-42 combo is more climbing gear than I need, and the 30-11 is not enough low end at certain times. I have found myself maxed on certain downhills wishing I had one more gear to drop. Doesn’t happen often and it really doesn’t impact my overall ride, but there have been times I hit the shifter and was maxed out.  I will probably switch out to a 32 front ring next time around.

You will like the simplicity of a 1×10 system. Less moving parts and less weight. It makes for a smoother quieter ride as well. I have a lot less chain slap than I had before as well.

in reply to: Wear earbuds riding on the trail? #189577

The last couple of months I have quit wearing them completely and don’t miss them. I use to wear one in but not both… now I just don’t wear them at all. I got into MTB to be outdoors in the woods doing something exciting, and to get away. I use to never wear them at all, but for whatever reason started doing so the last couple of years. Now that I have gone away from them, I doubt I will ever go back.

To be honest, I think I ride better.. I think I react quicker and more in tune with how my bike is handling and performing.. Probably because my sole concentration is just on the trail and not something being jammed in my ear. Or may be that is just what I am telling myself…. 🙂

in reply to: Slapped my sticker on my ride! #189088

Yeah, I have a pretty open canvas. Hard to mess up black on black, and my bike doesn’t have any sort of real design. Just matte black. I struggled with the idea of the added weight, but figured it was worth it in the end to represent. Ha! 🙂

I have rebuilt my entire bike from factory nearly 2 times. Most due to reason 1, some part of 2 and a few items being reason 3. But I think curiosity is a valid category. One reason I went to 1x.  I was curious mainly how it would effect my riding styel but, also wanted to shave weight a little, quite the ride and have less moving parts.  Same reason I went to a short cage rear, I could have rode a medium or long… but was mainly curious as to how it would ride and shift. The added clearance was a benefit.

I have the same curiosity in regards the oval chaining. Not sure it will be a performance enhancer as much as a conversation piece. But I could see me making the purchase to see what it is about.

in reply to: Right of way on hills? #187723

I have no idea what happened with my 4th sentence… lol..

I agree, being nice on the trail is not hard to do. Slowing your speed with a simple “Thank You” or “Enjoy the day” as you roll by helps. Lets them know you recognize them and are not trying to run them over.

in reply to: Right of way on hills? #187655

90% of the people I meet on the trail follow this line of thinking. There is about another 10% that don’t follow it, but I don’t let it bother me. A lot of time I just veer to the edge of the trail and stay in the peddle if there is room. I have had the we would each stop and urged the to pass. If I encounter a downhiller and he has a good run going or is riding a good line I will usually give him the right away as I would like the same, thought I don’t expect it. I do appreciate though when the guy coming down hill does take the time to stop if he sees me climbing and usually let him know as I pass.

Where I find it gets confusing is in the grey. Areas where there is a slight grade, or lots of back and forth and up and down. I don’t really consider somebody (or myself) peddling on a slight grade to be “hill” climbing…  Most of the times it works itself out as we will both make an effort to move to the side of the trail while still peddling.

OK… so of the 10 percent that don’t bother me… there is about 1% that does… You know… the guys that  are the ones that make zero effort and are content just to run ya flat over than make a move either way. Never understood that mentality.
