I know that I have read you expend more energy standing, and that you should stay in the saddle, but every time I try that I end up pulling up on the handlebars and pull the front wheel right off the ground, fall over and crash.

I read some good advise somewhere on climbing. Rotate your wrists down. You’ll be leaning over a lot more. That forces you forward and keeps your weight centered more.

I’ve got to break my recently acquired habit of getting off and walking 😮 I’ve been riding too many trails that are not ridable (up) for me.

I am convinced that dry lubes should be used pretty much on road bikes…

    Why is that?

I put the dry lube on my MTB, where I know I’ll be collecting dust every ride. Doesn’t gunk up as much. I use Pro-Link on my road bike, where I’m not getting much dust. Pro-Link on my MTB would be making mud soup every ride.

do you wear a helmet when you ride? always? why or why not?

Always. It’s just one of those things like seat belts. Just do it. I now use a Road-ID also, as I usually ride solo. Someone will know where to return the pieces when I really screw up..,

I can’t assume everyone has seen that before.

I hadn’t before this year. I took a nasty at Devils Backbone earlier this year. Put a nice temple dent in my helmet, although not quite as deep as yours. Did a number on my knee, which took 3 months for the fluid to go completely down. Luckily, it didn’t bother to ride on it. New helmet the next day.

I also picked up a full face helmet. Works great on the cold days and when we get the wind storms around here. Oh yeah, every now and then I also like to be humiliated and go do some lift serviced downhills. Those guys are insane…

Just got back into mountain biking. I built a pretty good xc bike and I need people to ride with around Fort Collins or wherever? Let me know if you want to ride.

I usually ride MTB one day on the weekend. I’m in Berthoud. I’d be happy to try and hook up with you. I’m waiting to see how much snow we get tonight to see where I’ll ride this weekend. I might try Coyote Ridge if the snow doesn’t stick around, as I need to complete that GPS track, but that one will be dangerous snowy. I’m riding an all mountain bike, so you’ll probably cook me on the uphill and flats. But I love the downhills 😃

I’m heading into my first winter in Laramie. Are there any trails in the Fort Collins area that are rideable for most of the winter??

Well, like most of Colorado, as long as the trail isn’t in the trees, the snow will be gone in a couple of days (generally). I’d think the trails along the eastern edge of Horsetooth would probably do quite well. I aim to find out this winter what remains ridable, even with snow 😀

Yeah, I used White Lightning for a while, and it just doesn’t last long enough for me, especially when it gets real dusty. I’ve a friend who uses graphite powder (just before every ride) as he loves a clean chain. Too much work.

Currently, I’m using T-9 Boeshield. So far (second application), it’s working fine. LBS recommended it. It’s not making a gooey mess, and I re-applied it to a rather dusty chain. It’s not building up a greasy mess on my sprockets or chain, even after my less than ideal use of it. My chain is not squeaking yet…

    Cheers,
    Rob

    Rob, no snow MTB rides?

I love riding in the cold. I just have to make it a priority. It’s easy to cop out when you cannot even find the trail head, let alone the trail, and it’s 20 degrees… But, I’m thinking of doing some real trail work this winter, and see how it goes. Might even pick up a pair of studded tires if we keep enough snow on the ground.

Depends on just how much fun I really have, and how much work it really is to stay on the trail.

‘Mo saddle time is the ultimate solution. I plan on pushing some iron this winter also, and see where that takes me.

I hope you get some good answers. I’m looking for them also.

I can say is that after 280 MTB miles and 250 road miles, I’m the second to last one up the hills in our group, not the last one like at the beginning of the year 😀 But, I can go longer, recover faster and just plain do more. I do ride with a couple of guys that are insanely fit (one rides 100+ road miles a week 😮).

I keep thinking if I only had a smaller gear…

Personally, I’m thinking the weight room holds part of the answer for me. It’s snowing right now, so less time riding.

Skiing won’t hurt – need strong legs for that.

I’m riding the Rocky Mountain Slayer 70, and am super happy with it. I’m a big guy (220lbs, 6’5"), and while a little heavy going up hills (35lbs), I have full trust in it going down. It has 6" travel front and rear, and I’ve had no problems with the air suspension (fork and shock). On our group rides, I’m the last one up (I’m out of shape), but the first one down, often by a wide margin 😉

So far I have 260 miles and 47 hours on it. The only problem I’ve had was air in the rear brake line while heading downhill. A bleed took care of that.

I spent about 4 months looking at bikes and looking at on line reviews, reading mags, etc. before settling on the Slayer. It is the right bike for me. But, you need to figure out what the right bike for you is. Also remember to take all online reviews with a grain of salt. I usually look for the extreams and see what they say.

I’d find a good LBS that has decent selection of bikes and talk to them about your riding style and price range. Then demo some bikes. My LBS (Sports Garage in Boulder, CO) will apply the demo fees to a bike purchase, so you’re not out any money, provided you buy from them.

    Luck,
    Rob

In your opinion, what are the top five trails in Fruita that I need to consider riding while I’m there?

I checked with a friend, and he recommended Kokopelli’s Trail / Loma

    Bring your GPS, as it’s un-tracked ;-)

    Cheers,
    Rob
