    don’t look at the top!!! – get into a rhythm  that you can sustain, and just keep grinding away. I was always taught to stick my ass to the seat as this conserves your legs energy and allows you to ‘endure’ for longer (well at least to the top anyhow!!!)

    in reply to: mountian biking shoes #208188

    i use spd clips and have 3 different pairs of shoes

    Specialized Defroster – keeps my feet warm and dry in the winter – have been a really boon over this winter. they are quite bulky though. https://www.specialized.com/gb/gb/117599

    Shimano Mt34 – absolute cracking pair of spd shoes – very much like a comfortable trainer but with the added bonus of being light and breathable. took these on trip to Peru last year – very durable riding shoes. http://www.jensonusa.com/Shimano-SH-MT34-SPD-MTB-Shoes

    Shimano XM7 – these are my hiking / riding shoes – so if I’m going to be going up a mountain and doing some hiking as well, then these are the perfect choice  – alway carry the spd covers and then they are also waterproof. Vibram soles for excellent traction. http://www.shimano-lifestylegear.com/gl/fw/products/tour/016sh_xm7.php

    Once you go clipless you never go back 🙂

    in reply to: MTB gps unit vs. smart phone gps app? #207776

    i use a Garmin EDGE 1000 to track my rides, seamless integration with Strava and my iPhone. I also have a 20,000 charging pack and i have a solar backpack which i use on longer rides.

    this is the backpack – allows me to trickle charge the charging pack during the day, then i can use the charger to power up my devices overnight

    in reply to: HR zone training on a mountainbike #207553

    I’m following a training plan from british cycling (modified) – so my week is as follows:

    • rest Monday
    • light 10 miles Tuesday (train to HR zone 2)
    • rest wednesday
    • outside ride on Thursday 10-15 miles – (not to HR zone)
    • rest Friday
    • club ride on Saturday (pretty hard  20-25 miles)
    • light recovery ride on sunday (to hr zone 1-2)

    rest days i am doing some roller exercises, and will be doing swimming on a Friday evening. After a couple of weeks i will be upping my distances- plan will get me to 100 miles in 8-12 weeks (ready for some sportive in the UK and then a MTB trip in may/june).

    I was finding i wasn’t loosing as much weight as i wanted, because i was always going hell-for-leather on the trails, but curtailing the efforts into a structured plan will also get me in the ‘fat burning zone’

    Thanks fort eh reply Aaron!

    I don’t get on with road bikes – don’t like the drop bars, and feel very uncomfortable / unsafe on one! Also turbo isn’t a option for me – as its just too boring 🙁

    My current bike isn’t really setup for endurance rides – am considering one of these to travel along the canals / footpaths etc

    in reply to: Any gay bikers out there? #207475

    good luck in your search – or just ride it baby!!!

    in reply to: Busy Lives Call for Faster (Electric) Bikes–Retch! #205954

    I would feel like i cheated if i rode one up the trail. Part of the impetus for me to get my arse up the hill is the payoff on the down …

    I think E-Bikes would loose that for me.

    in reply to: Mudguards: faux par, necessary evil or never! #205730

    i confess to be a person who doesn’t like to go home with a ass-crack or face full of mud so i always have a rear guard and a front guard protecting me from the shit off the road/trail.

    in reply to: Mountain bike bar ends: Yea or Nay? #205309

    was a YAY – now a NAY! – just get in my way …. great for long rides to give different hand positions, not so great for nettles and blackberry bushes (in the UK :))

    £50 excess

    in reply to: Do you have insurance for your mountain bike? #205179

    hi Jeff, i imagine that that scenario would be covered, the theft bit has 3 conditions – (in possession, in locked building or secured to non-moveable object) – thats the only condition on there.

    this is from the policy document:

    What are the key benefits and features?
    <div class=”page” title=”Page 11″>
    <div class=”section”>
    <div class=”layoutArea”>
    <div class=”column”>

    This covers loss or damage to your pedal cycles anywhere in the world up to the policy limit.

    </div>
    </div>
    </div>
    </div>

    thanks for the replies. Im looking to ‘do’ a trail centre for 4-5 days, then move on to another one.

    Ideally i would like to get some tutoring to improve my skills, then do some trails – downhill and also some guided trails would be good. this would be over a week or so’s time (depending on the number of activities i could find to do), then move on to another base for a different experience the next week or so.

    was thinking of a combination of Whistler then onto a trail centre near Seattle.

    or maybe

    Denver / colorado springs then into Utah

    in reply to: Do you have insurance for your mountain bike? #205143

    I’m based in the UK and use http://www.tsb.co.uk for my bike insurance. it only cost £67 to cover my bike for a year. (upto £3500 value of bike). this is worldwide cover, so whenever i take my bike away with me its covered!

    normal conditions- like theft isn’t covered unless its in your possession, chained up to a non-moveable object or in a locked building. also give £2million of public liability insurance.

    in reply to: Tubeless MTB tires: Should the bead "pop"? #205101

    did you put any sealant fluid in the tyre? – if not then it will deflate very quickly …. you will probably need more than 50psi to seal it though
