And now for Part II.
Well, last month we completed the new 1.2 mile long Cisler Trail in Marietta. It connects Cisler Dr. at Jackson Park in Marietta to the High School Trails. 1.2 miles of sweet singletrack that flows well in both directions even though you are actually climbing when going from the HS trails up to Jackson Park.
We have also added 1/2 mile of nice singletrack to the outer loop in the Kris-Mar trails. Plans are to add almost another mile that will tie the Kris-Mar trails to the new Cisler Trail.
We also have an agreement with a landowner (mountain biker) across from the High School where we have a few hundred acres to add more trails that will then tie in with the Broughton properties where we have obtained permission to utilize their trails for mountain biking. So more riding will come. It’s just going to slow down just a bit for the summer of course.
On a side note, we have also reclaimed / reopened 7 miles of trail in the Marietta Unit of the Wayne National Forest that ties on both ends of the Scenic River Trail near New Matamoras, OH about 20 minutes north of Marietta.

Well our forecast here in WV looks great so it’s off to the trails. Hope everyone has the opportunity to roll some sweet trails on such a fine day.

Welcome to the board and to this crazy sport that soon becomes a passion and quickly becomes an obsession. 😃

Know exactly where you are coming from CCR. Same thing here. Haven’t been out since last Sunday. Got out at 11:45pm for a night ride around town last night but no trails. Hope the rain is over this evening and I can get on the trails tomorrow. Hope you can get out this weekend.

"soezgg" wroteTry tightening up the bottom bracket, sometimes creaks can come from the bearing housings
Ditto ! That will also give you the chance to lube the splines and make sure the crank arm bolts are tight.

I’ve had very little problem with mine. I use tap water in it. When I get back from my ride I put the entire pack in the bottom of my refrigerator. I keep the temp just above freezing. I usually ride twice a week or more so it gets used alot. I just dump out the older water, rince one time and refill. If I’m going to be longer between rides I take the bladder out of the pack, dump out the water and put it in the freezer. Crap can’t grow in there. Just rinse it out and fill it before the next ride. I usually just put a little bleach in it once or twice a year with slightly warm water, leave it set for an hour and then rinse very well. Have been doing this for quite a few years now with no problems. Note: I never put anything other than water in my hydration pack. If I want sport drink, etc. I use a water bottle for those.

"Goo" wroteBut no music?
Well, the first short video I put together I thought turned out pretty good although you will notice the camera start slipping just prior to the finish. However, someone shot me a message and said I should watch about using music because I could be infringing on some groups patent/copywrite? I am still investigating that so that’s why no music on this one.

LMFAO ! ! ! That’s great !

Edit:, guess I didn’t get all the responses on email or I wouldn’t have needed this one. Thanks guys, sorry for the repeat. 😃
At 55 I always wonder how long I might be able to keep this up. This kind of story give me new inspiration. Problem is I’ve already gone through the stages of "It’s a sport" to "It’s a Passion" and am currently in the "Addicted" stage. I can’t picture that going in reverse order. I’ll keep you young folks posted. 😃

If you have a dealer in your area you might check out the Gary Fisher’s. I believe the components on the Paragon will be a bit better than the Giant. I purchased my Gary Fisher back in 2008 and my other bikes have collected dust since. I saw the Giant and it’s a nice looking bike I must say. I have an old Giant AC 6" travel full suspension and don’t ever plan to get ride of it. It’s been a solid bike. Still drag it out a couple times a year. As for the comment on 26". I’d go 29’er in a heartbeat.
Most important note is get the bike "YOU" want and like. If you don’t like the look and feel you won’t ride it as much.

Welcome to the board bbmfkp. Sorry I didn’t catch you number of posts on the other post I just replied to. I believe know you will enjoy the sport which will soon become a passion and then an addiction.
That’s a nice bike you have on order. I bought my son one in the middle of 2007 and he rode it HARD till early in 2009 when I got him a 29’er. I still have his F5 and use it to pull my Bob Trailer when doing trail maintenance or going bike packing. I also took it up to Rays Indoor Mtn Bike Park in January and had a blast. My son won the WV State XC Series 14 and under in 2008 on that bike.
Be sure to take a camera along and post up some of your rides for all of us to enjoy with you. Great bunch of folks here.
Life is short. Get out and ride.

"bbmfkp" wroteThat’s a sweet picture outdoornut. That looks like a blast riding in the winter. I just may be crazy enough to try that! 😃
Thanks bbmfkp, you’d like it. It’s a totally different challenge. One minute you are going good, next minute you have taken an abrupt turn off the trail and have to stop. My arms get more of a workout than riding through any of the nasty rock gardens I’ve ever ridden, which is many.

"CraigCreekRider" wroteHey Outdoornut, do you use any different tires for winter riding than the rest of the year?
Nope ! My Maxxis Ardents are awesome in everything I’ve thrown at them. I rode this past Sunday and in places I plowed through at least 8 inches of snow. See these pics.
Note where my feet were going about an inch or two into the snow while I was pedalling.
Couldn’t believe I was able to ride over these log overs in this deep of snow.
However there were just a couple places I couldn’t pedal.
And other places it wasn’t as bad.
It was 36 degrees all afternoon so the snow packed down and the Ardents grabbed right hold of it. I just lower the tire presure down to about 28 psi up front and about 35 in the back. With the snow you don’t have to worry about pinch flats.

The main saw I use is a Husqvarna 435 with 16" bar. However I also have an old Echo, small saw with a 14" bar. It’s only good for smaller trees or treetops that fall in the trail. It doesn’t see much use since I got the Husky. Our club just purchase a Husky 435 as well and two other members of the club have their own Husky’s. One other member has a Stihl 025 I think.

Glad you had the opportunity to ride in the snow. It is awesome, till it gets too deep… 😢

The love of the outdoors rings best to me, however if I knew why I was so addictied maybe I could stay home once in a while. It has been the most awesome continuous adventure I’ve ever had, yet it’s also been the most pain I’ve ever suffered several times, so it can’t be just good things. Maybe we need to start BA meetings for Bikaholics? Not !
Life is short………………… Ride Hard ! and be proud of the battle scars.
ODN
I shattered my dreamin’ today. Enough snow had melted that I could ride through my yard so I headed for the trails. It was awesome to be back on the bike after only being off it for a week and 1/2.
Gotta love it….. Yeeehaw !

February 12, 2010 at 08:55 in reply to: Good article on MTB & Wilderness areas in Outside this m #87474"trek7k" wroteJust read a great article in Outside mag by John Bradley about the ban on mountain bikes in Wilderness areas. Some key points:
A 2006 National Park Service study found "The proportion of trails with severe erosion … is 24% for ATV trails, 9% for horse trails, 1.4% for hiking trails, and 0.6% for bike trails."
Wow, why haven’t I heard this before? The article mentions the things you [i:1uydia11]can[/i:1uydia11] bring into Wilderness areas like skis and kayaks and they also bring up potential loopholes: What about mountainboards? Wheelbarrows? Kick bikes?
Banning bikes in Wilderness areas is bull but even IMBA is convinced it’s impossible to get that changed. Talk about frustrating…
I think is stinks as well. We just fought this fight with The North Sods here in WV and lost it to wilderness. AS for mountain boards, kick bikes, etc, I think they covered it well and have shut off all those as well. See the quote below and the link to the page I found it. Then the wonder why some folks bootleg.
"Sec. 6301.5 Definitions.
Terms used in this part have the following meanings:
Access means the physical ability of property owners and their successors in interest to
have ingress to and egress from State or private inholdings, valid mining claims, or other valid occupancies. It does not include rights-of-way or permits under section 501 of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 (43 U.S.C. 1761) (FLPMA) or parts 2800 and 2880 of this chapter.
Inholding means State-owned or privately owned land that is completely surrounded by Congressionally designated wilderness.
Mechanical transport means any vehicle, device, or contrivance for moving people or material in or over land, water, snow, or air that has moving parts. This includes, but is not limited to, sailboats, sailboards, hang gliders, parachutes, bicycles, game carriers, carts, and wagons. The term does not include wheelchairs, nor does it include horses or other pack stock, skis, snowshoes, non-motorized river craft including, but not limited to, drift boats, rafts, and canoes, or sleds, travois, or similar devices without moving parts."

We lost some awesome trails to wilderness last year and my heart still aches when I look at the photos. See North Dolly Sods in trails section.
