My boyfriend has the Anthem SX and loves it. It’s a great all round bike.

    BR,

Congratulations on your weight loss. It sounds like you’ve got a solid cardio program in place with all your road riding. You should be proud of your progress.

I agree with gd. There are a lot of good riders who are on the bigger side, so that’s encouraging.

Please keep us up to date on your progress. We’re looking forward to hearing about your new build.

Excellent that you’re working on your skills! You might try clipless pedals. I know that I feel like I’m bouncing around when I use platforms. Clipless help me maintain contact with the bike when I’m going over bumpy stuff fast. I find they also help my climbing. I like SPDS and have never had problems clipping in and out.

Sometimes it’s hard to find the demo days. Sometimes the manufacturers list them on their websites. Or you may ask people on the SORBA FB page or forum if they know of any.

Another option is to rent a bike from a shop. Some places will let you rent for a day and then if you decide to buy in the future, they’ll apply the rental fee to your purchase.

    Are you using clipless pedals?

What would you say is your biggest concern right now? You mention bouncing around a lot. A full suspension bike would absorb the bumps for you. Definitely see if you can rent or borrow one and see if it makes a difference. Nothing wrong with going FS even if it’s not the "recommended" bike for your area. Are there bike shops you can rent from? Or look for manufacturer demo days in your area. Which part of TX are you in?

If I were you, I’d probably go with the 2014 Lust 1 if you can get a deal on it!

Wow, you sound just like me last year. I got a Lust 2 advanced last year and love it. Before I picked it up, I had the LBS put on 1×11 drivetrain, carbon bars, and a lighter seatpost and saddle. I also had them put on a set of Stans Crests that I bought on ebay. I kept the stock fork, shock, brakes and cranks. Later I added a Lev dropper seatpost.

I understand that Giant ‘s aluminum frames are not much heavier than carbon, so I guess it just depends on whether you think it’s worth a few extra hundred for carbon. Carbon is stiffer, so if you’re concerned about flex, that may be a consideration. I don’t worry about flex because I’m light and not doing big jumps or anything.

I’m 5’4 and have the small size. It fits me great and I love everything about the bike. They were hard to find last year and it sounds like they’re popular again this year. I noticed a lot of men around my area were buying them for their wives for Christmas. Nice gift!

Let us know what you decide.

My boyfriend just picked up the Anthem SX and loves it. It’s pretty close to a "do anything" bike. The suspension is incredible. The riders who’ve bought them really seem to like them. We ride in the southeast on all kinds of trails. He loves the 27.5 wheels. He tried 29 but didn’t like them (and he’s 6’1). You get a lot of solid components for the money with the SX. He’s also 54 and had been riding a hard tail for almost 20 years. He finds he can ride a lot longer and use less energy with full suspension.

There are so many options these days, which is both good and bad! Good luck with your decision!

The Sorella Cycling group is a good place to start. We have monthly rides and informal rides for all skill levels. There’s also a fairly active FB group called MTB Atlanta with lots of beginners. Members post rides.

Also, SORBA groups like GATR are very welcoming. Look up the Atlanta Outdoor Club website. Again, many beginner type rides are posted there.

That is so cool that you’re doing that. Do you have a local bike co-op place near where you live? They could give you a lot of hands on lessons for repairing bikes. Local bike shops also often have classes.

Yes, I did the women’s only BR clinic in the spring and thought it was worth the money. Also good to tap into local, free resources as well. REI also has some one-day clinics.

Before you spend that much on a clinic, why not join the Sorellas cycling club here in Atlanta? It is a great group of women riders of all levels. They often have free skills clinics for members. And you can certainly learn from the more experienced riders in a safe and supportive environment.

Thank you all for this inspiring thread. I’m in the over 50 group as well (just barely, and I can’t believe that, as a woman, I’m even admitting that!). I’m just getting back into MTB after not having done it for a few years. I’m glad to hear that with time and practice it gets easier. Seems to take forever though. I see a lot if middle aged men on the trail but not too many women!

I’m new to droppers and I can’t get mine to go down, LOL! My riding buddies are able to get it. I think I’m too light or something’s a little quirky in the works.

Ginny, I’m light and can get mine to go down easily. I think some models are more finicky than others, but my Lev is really smooth and pops up easily as well.

in reply to: Tips for Dropper Seatposts? #125726

Yes, I’ve heard that as well. The "default" should really be to have the seat down except when flat or climbing.

    It’s quite a quad burner. 😮

Do you just get used to it? Sort of like after the first time you’ve done squats in a while and the next few times after that don’t feel so bad?

I have a 2014 Lust Advanced 2 and love it. I might pick up a 2015 Avail this year to replace my Giant OCR 1 road bike.

I think it’s great that Giant is committed to 27.5 and I love their Liv line of bikes.

Thanks, Greg! We spent last week in Salida and loved it. Rented bikes from the cool folks at Salida Bike Co. The Little Rainbow route was great given weren’t yet altitude adjusted. We also spent a few hours on the Arkansas Hills trails.

We hiked the Poplar Gulch and Ptarmigan Lake trails. Still a good bit of snow at the higher elevations to wade through. My boyfriend ran the Tenderfoot Race at FIBARK and did quite well.

We plan to stay more than a week next time. Salida is awesome and there’s so much to do!

Thanks, John! This is great information. I’m really looking forward to this.
