I tried to go to the ODI site to check out the inscription feature and was blocked by my work filter for "weapons". Those must be some bada$$ grips!

WOW! Do you work for like the NSA or something? It worked fine for me at work and the filters that Navy Marine Corps Institute (they run our military intranet) has some CRAZY ass filters in place…

in reply to: GPS: Is a Garmin like a Timex? #90668

I have a Garmin ETrex Vista (B&W screen) that has made 2 combat tours to Iraq, and definetly seen it’s fair share of abuse. I think it’s safe to assume that they will keep on trucking after a few spills and tumbles.

After reading your post and looking at ODIs site, I’m gonna have to snag a set of these on payday. Now just gotta figure out what I wan enscribed on the lock ring….hmmmm….

    Welcome Devil Dog!

AF here. Got family in NoVa, on my last visit I got to check out the USMC musuem. BADASS! really well done

Indeed it is. I actually just got married up there at the Marine Corps Museum Chapel this past weekend.

in reply to: what to carry #86227

    I carry the following:

    -Extra tube
    -patches
    -set of 3 tire levers
    -mini pump (attached to frame)
    -tire pressure gauge
    -mulit size allen keyset
    -military ID
    -cell phone

Plan to start carrying when I get a Hydration pack with some storage abilities:

    -Items already listed
-IFAK (Individual First Aid Kit – essentially a fully stocked trauma first aid kit)
-few spare parts here and there
    -grubbage (everyone’s gotta eat!)

This may sound kind of crazy, but look at some of the websites that are geared towards the military/law enforcement community. I’ve got a backpack made by 5.11 Tactical gear that could probably hold my entire bike if I took it apart (joking of course, but it hold a LOAD of stuff). I know that Blackhawk, 5.11, Spectre, and Spec Ops all make really good bags and have a bunch of options.

I pretty much thought the same thing Badcrow…. This guys seems like he’d have the mindset of well the military trains in the woods, and that hurts Bambi’s feelings; so I’m gonna lie in wait and ambush a soldier or Marine with my mean hacksaw…..I actually just smiled at the thought of that… 😆 Some kooks never cease to amaze me.

Not a side note at all. I’m the one that got off topic. And I’m about to do it again. 3..2..1…is this where you ride: http://www.singletracks.com/bike-trails … trail.html

If so, I’ve been reading up on the trail network here: http://www.quanticomtb.org/index.php?op … &Itemid=26

Dang it! Another one to add to my list! 😃

Yes that is the trail that I was riding today. I’ll have to see about getting some updated pics of the various trail sections up here. I think I’m gonna ride it again this weekend (try and drag my buddy and his brother out). There are some parts that can get pretty challenging (Powerline trail has massive ups and downs) and there are parts that can get pretty technical as well. It’s a good ride.

Are the trails at Quantico open to the public, or do you have to be based there?

I’ll have to check on that one for ya, but I’m pretty sure that they are open to the public. You just have to let the Military Police at the gate know your intentions and have a valid drivers license. On a side note the Panaracer Fire XC Pros worked GREAT on the Quantico trails today…and it was a soupy run to say the least!

I’ve been riding trails for maybe a year now and I can definitely be over-cautious when it comes to a some obstacles because I’m a big guy (6′ 290ish) and it hurts when I fall. Someone already mentioned riding with buddies who are better than you so that they can give you tips and pointers. I’m still a total noob and until I get in better shape, I’m going to suck for a while but that has been my biggest help so far. It’s helped in tackling new obstacles and in pushing myself longer on the trails which has really helped in my weight loss.

I can attest to that fact….in fact I blame you Mr. Orlando for getting me started into this addiction!! hahaha Just come ride with me out at Quantico one day, and I’ll keep ya going!

I’m up in Northern VA and I just mounted up a set of Panaracer Fire XC Pro’s on my Fisher Marlin, and gonna give em a go at some of the trails here on Quantico after work today. Good to hear that they are pretty good tires for this region. I’ll let you guys know how they work out.

in reply to: Garmin Etrex #73592

I’ve got a Garmin ETrex Vista B&W, using a Marine engineered mount for it on my handlebars (rear reflector bracket with some double sided foam tape and a zip tie) and haven’t had any issues with it falling off my mount or turning off at any point.

Fleetwood – From what I can tell, I mean I only did my first singletrack yesterday (8 miles), and it was great! Lots of terrain changes, some technical parts, some easy relaxing sections, and just an overall great time! I’d highly reccomend it.

Glad to see such a good reception here! 😄

CraigCreek- you’re right, I’ll never be the same after discovering trail riding…I’m already addicted!

Thanks again for the warm welcome here!
