I have been wheel shopping this whole off season and I can not make my mind up. I was looking at these Easton’s and I am worried because I am a Clydesdale. With gear I may be close to 225-230 (losing as we speak) but I want some strong wheels, I ride in the Appalachians and there are plenty of drops into rock gardens and root clusters so with my weight, trail conditions, and my budget I am afraid of buying a weak wheelset.

Any suggestions? I was also considering Fulcrum Red metal 5’s, and Mavic Crosstrail’s…HELP!

I’m not to familier with the Fulcrums but i would definitely recommend the Mavic Crosstrails. I have them on my bike (upgraded from Bontrager Duster) and they are awesome so far and they look great. I’m about 230lbs with no problems.

Thanks brother. I will definitely check them out. My buddy got some nevegals and he said he liked the panaracers fire xc pro better. Said he thought the nevegals grip was good but the panaracers were faster. Ever get over here to lakeland?

Ride them both. Pick which one you like better. Can’t go wrong with either.

Thanks. Those look sweet. I’ll have to check them out.

Thanks. Leaning towards Mavic because of their reputation but will definitely give Stans a look.

Goose….XC riding, weigh around 235lbs, and would like to stay around $500.

in reply to: Giant Trance X1, Trek EX 8, or Santa Cruz Blur XC? #88212

For me… warranty is a selling point. I know Trek & Giant have a lifetime warranty on the frame. Santa Cruz is only a 2 year warranty i believe and not sure about Titus. Fact of the matter is they are all awesome bikes so i can’t tell you which to buy but for me….that piece of mind that comes from having a lifetime warranty goes a long way.

If i’m gonna spend upwards of $2,000 or more i can’t leave it dirty. Clean & lube after every ride.

Maddslacker….Being as i ride a hardtail, the very noticable difference for me was the vibration dampening. When riding with my aluminum bars my hands would go numb after a while even after i put on Ergon grips. Since i changed to carbon it has helped alot. I don’t think i need to explain the benefit of a carbon seatpost on a hardtail.
These benefits might not be as noticable on a FS bike. I don’t know. For me it made a difference.

I got TITEC Pluto Carbon bars and a Bontrager Carbon seatpost on my Fisher. No problems and they are awesome compared to the aluminum ones i replaced.

I have a 09′ Hoo Koo E Koo and it handles awesome. Rode a Giant similar in comparison and it didn’t handle half as well. Frame is very sturdy and i haven’t had any problems. It’s been upgraded quite a bit since i got it. IMO i would buy the Fisher. G2 geometry is awesome.

in reply to: Scott Genius, thoughts? #85583

Scott makes nice rides but they are overpriced IMO.

Gotta agree with Chili. Plenty of sweet tea around here and i consider myself somewhat of a sweet tea conisour. As far as trails, other than Tsali i can’t imagine much better riding than Santos or Alafia. I would throw Carter in there also since that is my home trail. It’s not long but definitely worth it.

PMC, Congrats on your new purchase. Specialized does make a good bike even though it’s probably made by Giant. I’m a Fisher man myself. Their new G2 geometry frames handle so well. But honestly they are all solid bikes with lifetime frame warranties which you can’t go wrong there.

    Enjoy it!

    That’s one sweet looking trail.

Don"t know who Cujo is but i"ll be on the lookout for him.

Hey ChiliPepper. Thanks for the compliment on my Fisher. I’ve done quite a few upgrades since that pic was taken. SHimano LX cranks, Bontrager Carbon seatpost, Selle italia saddle, Ergon grips, Titec stem and carbon bars. I’ve definitely developed the MTB sickness. My riding buddy just bought a brand new Trek EX 8. We’ve been hitting the trails regularly.

Thanks for the welcome reception. Chilipepper…You ever come out this way to ride? Also what have you got riding wise over on the coast by you?

HanSolo…There is also some nice singletrack over in Tampa called Flatwoods. It’s off Morrisbridge road. Not real technical but nice singletrack. Good place to put in some miles.

Hey fellas. Been lurking around on here for a while now. Thought i would finally chime in. Hansolo, you definitely need to get over here to lakeland and try Carter. Not a very long coarse but definitely rocks.
