are most effective when worn correctly

Haha, I did just see someone riding down the road today with a helmet on backwards. 😛
    Just saying.

Wearing safety equiptment should file under common sense.
Besides a helmet I also always wear glasses. I’ve had a bee fly into my eye while riding…not once, but twice. Luckily I had shades on when that happened. After that I got creeped out at the thought of it happening again and I’ve always had something protecting my eyes since. Plus it helps keep flying dirt out.

I literally just had a conversation with a friend where we agreed that we’ll go mountain biking sometime while carrying our bows and knives. Not sure what the heck we’d shoot at on our bikes…just thought it’d be funny.

I always wear a helmet when on a bike. My friends and I specifically go out in bad weather where there’s rain, things falling from trees, etc. and it’s nice that the visor keeps a lot of the rain off your face and you won’t get hurt by a falling branch. More things falling on me than me falling…
Also, being around collegiate races where they’ll get real mad if anyone who doesn’t have one on (even if you’re just sitting on a trainer and couldn’t possibly fall.) helps I guess.

But that bring up a good point now that I think about it.
I don’t always wear one when I’m inline speed skating. Mainly when I’m really racing someone. Not always when I’m just fuddling around.
And I never wore one when I used to skateboard as a kid.

Sure there are bike hotels in new zealand as well :-)

Huh, never heard of such a thing. I’ll check it out.

    Dear Ginny_Tory.

Yes, actually bike hotels, bike hostels and other types of accommodation do exist.
They are all specialized to a different extent in providing services and outdoor activities for bikers or for other segments of activities as well.

I do not know in which country you like so I can not tell exactly if that is developd in your country. :-)

I’m currently living in New Zealand.

I don’t know anyone from the board of tourism, sorry.

I have met and chatted with a number of DOC, Department of Conservation, workers while travelling. They are also involved in building and maintaining the tracks around New Zealand. They did say that more and more tracks are being built and connected up cause the tourism board has realized the significance of cyclists. There’s the Alps2Ocean mtbing trail that cuts through the fiordlands. There’s a path being build from the north to south along the coast, I forget what it’s called, but it looks beautiful. So bike tourism in this country is definitely growing.

On another note, why isn’t there the giant list of countries available for Bike Shop listings?
I have a habit of walking into all the bike shops and town and chatting with people there, so I’ve got a big mental list of them in my head for New Zealand. With how much the trails here eat up your tires, that sorta info will definitely help.
Though it really isn’t hard to just walk around the town here and just run into one either.[/quote:90ld0oet]

From everything I’ve heard and read, the mountain biking is off the chain in New Zealand. I would love to get to experience it for myself!

The bike shop section is relatively new, and we’ve been adding individual country categories if we think we can get info to fill them–we didn’t want to add a hundred empty categories to the database 😀

I just added a New Zealand bike shop section, so feel free to add as many bike shops as you’d like! Australia is already activated… if there’s another country you’d like to activate, just let me know.[/quote:90ld0oet]

Yeah I feel like NZ is known to be a great spot to ride but it doesn’t look like there’s been a huge flood of people travelling for it, but it’s picking up. The people are more locals travelling from the cities and such for the great rides. Probably cause NZ takes 2 days to fly there, haha.

Thanks! Oh, give me 2 days, the NZ database will be totally filled up. 😀

    ‘Bike Hotel"?

As in a hotel specifically for bike tourists? Will they be anything like hostels?

I travel all the time and always stay in hostels. I have an HI membership ontop of the always cheap prices. They always either have a bike storage or locker room where I can keep my bike and I can always find a bike shop in town if I need something. Quite happy with it. How would these bike hotels be better?

With the price of gas I may never go to the eastern US again, unless I can find a few to tour the Appalachians in autumn.

The Kingdom in VT is supposed to be amazing. I’ve got some friends renting a house up there for 2 weeks to just mtb the area. Eastcoast has some real nice spots.

Cool. I’ve got a ton of trails to add then.

Rode the South and Central South Island so far. Just bought my ticket to head up to the North Island next month! Just hope I have a reasonable way to get a bike box and getting to the airport seeing as I don’t have a car in this country.

I’m planning to ride the Northern half of the South Island sometime in Spring. And of course head back to Queenstown again. Such a wicked MTBing town.

I’ll be living in Australia for the month of December next, but it seems like they have a lot of trails already drawn in.

Haha, drats. I was just there the other day.
Well hopefully it’ll be open the next time I visit the area.
