The video is trying to push for cycleways. kid on bikes is trying to scare the parents into imagining their kids being hit and then wanting a safe place for bikes too. so, Pathos.

For the bike injuries, I have needed stitches a twice from mountain bike crashes, and wound up in the hospital once after being hit by a car. So that is three trips to the hospital. IMO, that should count as 1 for this type of survey, but I would bet it is reported as 3, even though 2 of the incidents happened on the dirt and not related to traffic in any way. Makes me wonder about that type of statistic’s accuracy, since the reporting party would be the hospital.

The survey was done by the Center of disease control and prevention and national highway traffic safety administration. They were only counting road related accidents.
All except for the 49,000 injuries number idk the background of that one.

Funny, I just finished my speech about road car/bike safety half an hour ago. Those numbers are ‘real’ – as in they are actually study numbers. Accuracy of those numbers for what we assume they portray however, not so much. Cyclists do(only?) account for 1/14th of all road deaths. And those 49,000 injuries – yeah that were reported. You always have to look at statistics more closely to get the whole picture and don’t assume anything about the numbers. This isn’t to say that roads are completely safe for cyclists, but usually there has to be a load of people getting killed/hurt for people to give enough of a toss to do something.
The thing about being hit with helmets, yeah there’s actually a word for things like that but I forget it. It’s like when airbags were put in cars, more accidents happened. People think they’re protected so act more reckless. Argument being if people had a giant spike in the middle of their steering wheel instead that’d impale and killed you if they drove badly and got hit, everybody would drive carefully and never try anything stupid.

Why should you be scared of porcupines? Once I met a porcupine on the trail and had to chase him to take a decent picture. I thought these animals are relatively harmless.

Hahaha. I’m imagining someone running after a porcupine with a camera now. 😆

And wtf WHY are there random guys on mtb trails stealing bikes? That’s the randomest thing I’ve seen yet…

Canada’s my favourite place. Road trip through BC and Alberta with your bikes. You won’t regret it. It’s where I really got into mtbing.

Not to worry, Ginny, you’ll be fine.

It might be especially helpful if you have other high altitude states left in the queue right before Colorado. I wouldn’t go straight from Florida or Delaware to Co if I could avoid it. Maybe work through Wyoming, Utah, or New Mexico right before CO.

Also, CO has tons of riding that isn’t at extreme altitude. If you have a month to spend here, you’ll be able to acclimate fine, especially if you take it gradually.

The other states I’m missing at North, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. lol. I’m gonna storm chase through those states. Not exactly high up.

I hurt my lungs before, and though I patched ’em up, my lung capacity and breathing’s not great. Gotta keep it slower or I hyperventilate. So, I do more endurance 6+ hour rides than going fast. I probably should just loop around and go through New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah again before hitting Colorado. Work my way up. I wanna re-do a lot of states anyways. We’ll see how much money I’ve got to work with when I get there, lol.

My team mate’s shipping my new bike out from CO. They were suggesting I just fly out, ride, and them bring him home. Only if I had the time to stick around for more than a weekend I would. I want to spend a proper chunk of time out there.[/quote:3bztsm0k]

Ginny,
The best riding in South Dakota is in the Black Hills Altitudes there are around 5,000 feet. That would be a perfect intermediate step to Colorado.

I used to live in North Dakota, so I know a good bit about the best trails there. If you’re looking for fun in the southern plains states, check out these articles:

I know what it’s like to have diminished lung capacity. When your time in CO gets nearer, let us know if you need any trail recommendations. In fact, it might be a good excuse for a few of us Singltracks folks to get together.[/quote:3bztsm0k]

Thanks. Those trails look nice. Will definitely keep them in mind!

I usually get weird looks when I’m the slowest person in a group even though I’m the one who rides the most.

I promised myself I’d finish getting my college degree first before I run off again and travel. So I haven’t planned much other than what states to hit. It would be fun to meet some of yall along the way. It’ll be a good year or two before I’m free to run off again.

If you ever come up to State College, let me know. 😀
Then Penn State Cycling team mountain bikers are always happy to show people around. I help TA the cycling class and bring students out all the time. We’ve got some great rides up here. Well worth a weekend trip.

in reply to: Opinion: It should be hard, shouldn’t it? #125066

There needs to be a balance. There should be trails for everybody of every ability. You can’t leave anyone out. Easy to hard to suicidal – make em all. Is that so hard?

in reply to: Altitude #99920

I’m trying to travel through all 50 states. I’ve got 7 left. Colorado’s being left for last for a hopefully 1 month of mtbing. Reading this thread’s made me iffy on the idea now.

in reply to: Month long vacation…Where should I go? #125024

So come up north to Canada. 😛

in reply to: New Race Offers $1 Million Prize Purse #125043

Yeah, I read about that one. But 10k entry fee? Damn. If you’re willing to pay that as an entry fee for mtbing, a million probably won’t impress you as much.

in reply to: No more 26", now what? #121890

Found out my flight allows second baggage so I was able to take my MTB home without any extra cost. So I’m keeping my 26" hardtail and putting off any new bikes for now.

Thanks for the info though. I’ll keep it in mind when I get around to getting a new bike.
