Warm-up or just hit it?

Subject line says it all – do y’all prefer to warm-up or just hit the trail?

Most of the time, I like a few minutes of warming up; some flat terrain to get the limbs moving, heart pumping and blood flowing. Then swoop my way in or climb my way up. But sometimes there is no warm-up and you’re just straight onto trail.

      Which do you prefer?

And, if it’s just hitting it from the go, I’m curious to know your age. 😀

Some rides have a little way to go to the trail head so I use that for warm up but if the trail head is at the parking area I just take off easy and pick up the pace in a bit. If I was racing the warm up is very important. I’m 57 and there may be very little difference between warm up and all out but I have fun and that’s why I go. 😄 Later,

46 and i usaully just hit it. and don’t forget to let r rip!!!

23 here. I hit it and quit it!

I’m 35, and for just a trail ride I just go. I probably don’t hit it as hard though during a trail ride with buddies.

For a race, I have to warm up or I will suffer the entire race.

Hit it, but I never warmed up in high school or college either (bad habits die hard.)
31, will be 32 at the end of this month.
IF I raced, I would warm up before hand. You’re paying money to ride, might as well get the most out of it.
I really want to get in the habit of warming up before a regular ride…but the trail keeps calling me!

For what it’s worth, I do warm up before I play paintball (my other addiction) whether it’s a tournament or practice.

Just hit the trail. maybe start a bit slower than my normal pace for the first few minutes.

Usually, I just start with an easier loop and consider it a warm-up. I do like to get the blood flowing and heart ready.

After work rides I just hit it and go.Most of the day I am on the go at work and time to ride is limited.Weekend rides I am can’t wait to ride so I usually forget to warm up.I feel better if I remember to warm up though.51

Usually I just hit it, but if I’m doing a longer ride, I’ll stop after 1/2 hour or so and take 15 minutes and do a full set of stretches.

Actually, I think I should be stretching more than I do….

    • #99340

      I just start riding. I’m 40.

    • #99341

I do some warm up, light pedaling, stretching, but man AFTER those long rides taking about 20 minutes to stretch everything real good can take the edge off a lot of future soreness. I ride my heart rate down a little, then open the door to the car and stretch it out to the radio.

I’m 21 from Boise Idaho! young and fresh! But I am always so tense and sore that I can’t even walk, so I have to stretch for a good 20 min before I even get on my bike. Then I like to start with an easy loop. usually a slight uphill climb to a nice smooth cruise down, then it’s time to really go hard and eat some dirt!! 😼

    • #99343

I do a few quick stretches, no more than a few minutes, and go for it. A little stretching goes a long way, I’d recommend it.

    • #99344

I’m 21 and I do a quick spin-up, hop off, stretch quickly, spin up one more time and then hit it. Maybe 5 minutes total?

    • #99345

Just got back from our Tues night group ride. I don’t think anyone ever stretches on our group rides, we just always sorta spin a little bit as we get going on the gravel road, and then drop the hammer when we hit singletrack.

I am 35 and it depends if it is early morning then I will do a quick ham and quad stretch and then put it in low gear on my way to the trail head, then I hit it.

If its mid-day, then I will just hit it.

    • #99347

44 myself and usually start with a low gear and gear ratio until my muscles are warmed up

    • #99348

Im 21 and I just use the early sections of a trail as a warm up. But I do agree with doing a nice set of stretches after my ride, seems to complete the whole thing kinda like that chime at the end of yoga (if you’ve ever done yoga). But yeah as long as your awake and alert, just hit it

    • #99349

      52 Just go for it

    • #99350

24 I usually just go for it. unless its a longer ride then I will stretch out a bit.

    • #99351

I try to spin in a low gear for awhile at the beginning of the trail to warm up the leg muscles. Living in Rockies makes that a little harder since most of the trails start straight uphill 😃

Hey Fitch, I like a warmup, it takes a while to get these 71 year old legs.
