April 28, 2013 at 12:54 #118611Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz has begun efforts to build a 4-mile flow trail in the Soquel Demonstration State Forest.
A flow trail is a purposely built trail for mountain bikes which emphasizes speed and rhythm and contains linked berms and rollers with some constructed features. The course is designed in a way that effectively utilizes the rider’s momentum to minimize pedaling and braking, offering an overall feel of a downhill pump track. The trail is expected to feature a 6- to 7-percent grade, 38 switchbacks, net elevation loss of 1,280 feet and a progressive bike skills area.
The project will be funded in part by raffling off an bike donated by Ibis Cycles of Santa Cruz. Tickets cost $5 and the winner can choose between the Ripley 29 or Mojo HD models. For information, visit http://www.mbosc.org/own-the-flow/

This will be a great addition to the Demo Forest! When I rode it last year, I was impressed by the awesome variety of features and the great flow already present, but it’s readily apparent with one ride there that these trails are of the home-grown variety. They lack that professional, quality construction that you find on most freeride trails at a resort. With the addition of a purpose-built flow trail, the Demo Forest is definitely taking a step in the right direction!

Sounds awesome! That area is great, and I’m sure the trail would get a lot of notoriety from the Sea Otter being in the area.
