Man I am jealous. Sounds like a great trip. If you get into western Virginia Carvins Cove and Douthat State Park are 2 good trail systems that are well marked and easy for a visitor to navigate.

That’s one hell of a vacation!
If you happen to make it to Northern VA and Southern MD, I suggest these:
Lodi Farm in Fredericksburg, VA [url:i2nr7mgh]http://www.singletracks.com/bike-trails/lodi-farm.html[/url:i2nr7mgh]
Fountainhead in Fairfax, VA [url:i2nr7mgh]http://www.singletracks.com/bike-trails/fountainhead-regional-park.html[/url:i2nr7mgh]
Rosaryville State Park in Upper Marlboro, MD [url:i2nr7mgh]http://www.singletracks.com/bike-trails/rosaryville-state-park.html[/url:i2nr7mgh]
Schaeffer Farms in Germantown, MD [url:i2nr7mgh]http://www.singletracks.com/bike-trails/schaeffer-farms.html[/url:i2nr7mgh]
At Schaeffer, there is also a brand spanking new pump track near the trails. I haven’t been to the pump track yet so I don’t know exactly where it is but if you asked the locals, I’m sure they could direct you. Edit: I’m also not 100% sure that it’s even open yet but it def will be by the time you take your trip.

I agree. Why go south into the flat, hot lands when you can go North to the mountains?!
Hit Pisgah, Dupont, Tsali, Chattanooga area, and if you have time, maybe Boone area.
Coming from Kennesaw, maybe do it in this order:
Chattanooga
Tsali
Pisgah
DupontOn second thought, there’s more than enough trails in Pisgah alone to have you riding for two weeks! 😄 It’s up to you.
As for specific trail information, just use the trail database, it’s there for a reason 😉

I just rode FATS for the first time last weekend. One word…Awesome! I only had time for 2 trails (Skinny and Brown Wave). You must check this place out. I know I will be back ASAP. Very nice camping on the lake at Petersburg Campground (GA).

I second "CraigCreekRider"s recommend of Carvins Cove. It’s just outside of Roanoke Va and about a 10 minute (easy to get to – 3 or 4 turns) drive from I-81 to the trailhead parking lot. You will pass a bike shop on your way (Just The Right Gear) that will sell you a day pass for the parking lot (2.00). They can give you a trail map and LOTS of first hand trail advice. The Cove offers a full range of difficulty/challenges.
If it’s a possibility, be sure to check out "CraigCreekRider"s excellent photo link in his post above. He’s got a folder of pics for each trail.
My wife and I love the place – just recently saw our first bear cubs out there.

And I’ll third it. I went last year and it was great. I hope to mark Douthat off my list soon, but everything I hear is fantastic. If you are coming through Richmond, VA, there are some nice trail systems here as well, including the JRPS system(north bank, belle isle, buttermilk, forest hill park) which is downtown, up and down the river, and home to the XTERRA East Championship and other races.

I rode FATS a few weeks ago also and I’d recommend hitting Bartram Trail too, http://www.singletracks.com/bike-trails … trail.html.
We stayed at the St. Petersburg campground which is where the trailhead is and just stumbled upon it. We were pleasantly surprised. 20 miles of fast and flowy trail, very much like FATS.

Going as far north as Pennsylvania? Definately hit Allegrippis Trail system. I just did a road trip to there this past weekend. Epic trip! Super fun fast downhills. Trails are pefectly marked. Guys over at Rothrock outfitters will give you some good advice. Boxers Cafe next door is great for lunch and a few beers! This trail is on a huge lake which provides for fishing, kayaking, boating etc. Plenty do to and the lakefront cabins are great at the Lake Raystown resort. They also have a ton of campsites.

I’d also suggest trails in NW Georgia to include the Pinhoti, Bear Creek, etc. before heading to Chattanooga. You can stay here. SW of Dalton you’ll find the new Dry Creek trails and Pilcher’s Pond that connect to the Pinhoti. Some sweet stuff for sure.
While in Chattanooga be sure to ride Raccoon Mountain and the Enterprise South Nature Trail system. On over past Cleveland, TN you can check out Chilhowee and Tanasi and then on over to Tsali and beyond.
IMHO you’d just be wasting time to drive great distances with all these options within 3-4 hours from your home. For more info check out SORBA Chattanooga, NWGA SORBA or the SORBA forum.
