Hey everyone, we just updated the photo pages on Singletracks and want to get your feedback. We added some new features and also reorganized some of the existing info. Here are a couple samples:
http://www.singletracks.com/photo.php?c=1&p=56474
http://www.singletracks.com/photo.php?c=1&p=61638Notes:
– Larger photos: click to enlarge the photo.
– Geotagging: Many photos submitted via the Singletracks app were already geo-tagged but we didn’t have a way to display that info. Now we do… and you can guess what’s coming next once we get a bunch of geo-tagged photos. 😀
– Photo ratings are back! We removed the ability to rate photos for a bit, though we retained all the old ratings. Gallery photo order and the trail thumbnail are chosen based on the highest rated photo.
– Camera/settings info: For serious photo geeks we’re displaying info about the camera used to shoot the photo.
– Improved notifications. When you "watch" a photo, you’ll get an email whenever anyone comments on your photo.
– More sharing options.
– Additional edit fields, including the ability to completely delete a photo you uploaded by mistake. -

I like how it now says the image size… before I would sometimes click an image to see if there was a (much) larger view (only sometimes to find it was the same size), now we can see exactly how much bigger it will be… good stuff

Wow, also liking, how you can go in and edit the exact location where the pic was taken!
Just tried it on one of my pics… the marker indicated it was fairly close to where it was taken, but on another nearby trail
By zooming in, I was able to place it exactly where I took the pic
😃

Haha, I meant the like button to like your forum post as a joke. But okay, good to know that too.

If you add the photo location – the image size no longer shows? Or is it just me?!

Hmmm… I’ll have to check into that.

Ok, I added location info to one of my pics and it didn’t delete the meta info. We’re not able to get the meta info for all photos so maybe the pic you located didn’t have the dimensions listed to begin with?

Just looked at the photos of mine I previously looked at, and no dimensions. Looked at some ones I hadn’t looked at recently, they had the size. Until I clicked the back button… Looked at a few other members pics. Most of thos showed the size, until I went back to them. This happening with firefox 23.0.1 and safari 6.0.5 on a macbook air. Probably not massively important in the scheme of things, but like I posted previously, I was interested in seeing the dimension of pics…

Could you post links to a couple of the pics that had dimensions then lost them?

Having loaded the same photo twice how can one be deleted? The edit button isn’t there.
All fixed now. Thanks.

Right now the only way to fix that is to rotate the image on your computer, the re-upload it using the edit form.

Looks good guys. I like it. The next plan should be a "trail view" system, like Google street view, where we can take a virtual ride down the trails. That would be sweet… lol 😎

So (unfortunately) this already exists.

And Google got in on the game a couple years ago starting with this "Street View" of the Bright Angel trail at the Grand Canyon:

Why do I say unfortunately? At the risk of sounding old fashioned, IMO this takes all of the fun out of exploring new trails. Nevermind the fact that you can already watch dozens of unedited helmet cam videos of entire trails. Maybe we should all just stop traveling to trails and enjoy them from the comfort of our laptops. 😀
Plus I don’t have the patience to sit and watch some of these things load. I’d much rather experience trails in real time!

Although I agree that riding a trail and exploring an area is the best way to experience things, sadly not all of us get to shred sweet Colorado singletrack on a daily basis. 😢
But, having looked at the other similar systems they don’t look as cool as the idea looked in my head. I guess it was just me thinking that when I try and scout new trails to go ride I want a good idea of what they’ll be like. Maximize the experience for my expenditure to get there. Sifting through the "trail photos" (which often seem to be loaded with people’s trip pics that don’t show the trail or surrounding scenery) doesn’t always reveal the awesomeness of a given place. Oh well… 😐
And please, PLEASE, don’t force me to watch unedited entirely POV helmet cam footage. Please… 😆

My thoughts exactly. Here’s how the 15-year evolution of Singletracks trail info has progressed:
We should add photos of trails! Done.
We should let people review trails! Done.
We should add maps of trails! Done.
We should add videos of trails! Done.
We should try to do some kind of virtual reality thing! Nevermind–not as cool as we thought it would be.😆

The only thing I’m still missing on the new pages, not related to photos, is no button to report a problem with the page. I like he "edit info" though. I guess i’s wiki now?

Oops, we left that off by mistake. The link is back under the "actions" menu at the top of the "about this trail" section. But yeah, in most cases it’s better to just update the info directly, wiki style.
