So I’ve been thinking… with 16,412+ mountain bike photos here on singletracks, there are way way way too many photos for us all to sift through and look at. So, I was thinking, since we know have a super-slick "share" link on the photo pages, we should "share" photos on here.
Post up a photo that you think is pretty sweet. Could be one you’ve taken, or one you found; somebody riding, a snap shot of a sweet trail, or some epic scenery that you saw while riding. Whatever it is, we’ll all get to check out some of the sweetest photos on singletracks, including a whole bunch that maybe don’t have a whole bunch of "five" ratings and are pretty hidden.
Here’s one I took to start it off:
From Whitefish, Montana (in the northwest corner)

I will simply say this is CA. Legal to ride but almost always bike free, can’t advertise something like that and keep it that way.

All right, I know there have been threads on this before but what cameras are you guys using to get these shots?? If nobody minds post that with your photos like in the magazines. I apparently need to go camera shopping soon…

Most of mine are with a cheap Kodak Easyshare.
A few are with my wife’s Canon Digital SLR.
All of these and these are with my Kodak.
My wife got me the Kodak at Walmart for the price linked above, but I have also seen it cheaper at online retailers.
I should also mention that I fix the colors and white balance in Paint.net, which is a freeware photo editing tool.
-
June 4, 2009 at 12:22 #79556
Yeah, I need to purchase a new camera to take on the trails. The digital I have is a little large (and expensive) to take out. Last week I used a Target disposable. I hope some of them turned out.

I use a Canon PowerShot A540. The whole Canon PowerShot line is excellent, and is a doable price range.
This isn’t one I’ve taken, but is going to be my next great bike expedition: Tsali. I have to ride it, if only to say that i’ve ridden it. My girlfriend and I are planning a trip up there in the not-too-distant future.

It isn’t the camera that makes the great picture, it is the person behind the camera. These pictures came from people who recognized something interesting and took a picture. If you want to create good pictures then watch what is going on around you and if you see something that might be visually interesting stop and take a shot using whatever camera you have. If you are like me a lot of it will be junk and will end up being deleted, but if you keep doing it eventually you will get lucky and capture something good. If you are really serious then you can take a photography course or read some books about photo composition — that can make a big difference. (Maybe someday I will take my own advice…)
So just have fun on the trail and keep the camera where it is easy to grab. You will get some good shots if you think about it and take the opportunity to take a picture instead of riding on without stopping.
-
June 5, 2009 at 09:37 #79562
I would disagree, but only a little.
90% or more of the picture us seeing something worth taking a picture of, like you said, but there are definitely some bad cameras out there that will not let you capture what you see.
I’ve learned a lot about framing and composition from watching my wife, who is a photographer, but you still need a camera with at least basic functionality.
I have a cheapy Kodak easyshare that is thin and fits nicely in my jersey pocket, but also accurately photographs what I point it at.
Another tip is to play with settings and presets on your camera, snap the same photo with several different settings and see what comes out the best.
Also, use your saddle or handlebars as an impromptu "tripod" to stabilize the camera.
Anyway, that’s all I got, and here’s another pic I took with the Kodak last night.
I edited this picture in the free program paint.net and darkened it 5 steps, increased the contrast 5 steps, and increased the saturation 10%. I apply those same settings to pretty much all my pics. -

Thanks you guys! I have to admit I am about a year behind in posting to it though.. D’oh! Check back in a few days and Ill have another folder for ‘09 trips.
Beautiful bike Maddslacker!
Reading through the posts here I could morph a lot of the ideas here and they pretty much spell out how I feel about my photography-Like Boinked said- always carry a camera. Probably why I have went back to the smaller P&S that are easier to pack along rather than the SLR’s. Plus todays camera technology is putting so many brains into smaller packages its really easy to get a nice camera that is also small enough to carry.
I use Irfanview photo program and have for years, I don’t even know much about any of the expensive/elaborate programs. I try too take a good picture in the field rather than fix it later, that said I always end up bumping up the contrast and tuning down the gamma settings just like everyone else.
And learn to stop and take the shot, even if your not sure its gonna work out, 1 out of 10 is my usual rate of return for good pics (hey remember when we all shot with film and had to pay for all them mistakes? I do… D’oh!). Composition is very important but somehting that you pick up over time with practice. Im quite often riding somewhere I may never be again so Im constantly reminding myself to capture some of it, plus I have a niece & nephew that need to understand it’s a big wild world and they should go see it! If I can influence them in a good way my time here is a success.

I realize that composition has a lot to do with the pictures and I have read several articles about taking outdoor/sport related pictures. It just always seems that the photo never does the scene justice; either the steep hills look smaller than reality, or the subject looks further away than they really are, or they appear washed out. There is only so much editing/enhancing that can be done. Oh well I’ll just keep at it and study as much material as I can. You guys really have some inspirational pics though.

Gnarly is pretty much the right description for Dragons Back. Layers and layers of flat rocks that protrude out of the ground at all angles make it a an interesting but pretty hard ride. The ridge is about 10-12 miles long and has patches of this type of rock scattered throughout.
Buddy of mine calls these Dragon Scales. I watch for those, but for some reason I don’t get any more flats there than other places I ride.
Some more photos here from the Dragon.

CCR, is that some form of shale or slate rock? As a gemologist, I get interested in rocks and minerals like those in your pic. Still looks like some sick looking terrain to have fun on. 😄
Mongoose, I don’t think its shale or slate. The lower slopes of that ridge have what we call shale. Rock that kind of delaminates into thin sheets when you hit it hard. The stuff on top is hard, more like limestone. Sorry, don’t know my rocks too well. Will have to ask my rocktomologist buddy sometime (did I just invent that word?). Rocks always intrigue me, wish I knew more about them. Some of Natures artwork.

Dude, turn around,I think were in the same boat, hahahahahahahahahaaha.
We have a place called Dinasour Ridge up at Dakota Ridge and somtimes when I’m up there I wish I knew more abut all that cool ass looking rock, especially where there are dinasour prints in the rock.Recently, they closed down the road that goes up and over Dakota Ridge to make it more tourist freindly and to probably help preserve the place as well since it is a huge tourist attraction. But man, somtimes I just have to ignore it so I can keep on riding, cant always have your cake and eat too I guess. -

I have rode Big Mountain, Bill Creek, and a couple other ones in the WhiteFish area. I have also rode Lone Pine, and a few more over in Kalispell area. Wolf Creek Trail near BigFork. Emerald Lake near Bozeman among a few other places I do not remember the names. When I do go to Montana, I am normally in the Helena, Butte, to Missoula area to follick for Montana sapphire. I also try to go and visit a friend whom has a ranch up in Whitefish, MT when I am that way. If you have lived in WhiteFish, you may know of them. Michael & Pam Rozell, which own and operate the Potters Field Ministries Ranch near WhiteFish. I noticed from your blog that you are a youth minister, so thats why I mentioned the Rozell’s. Thanks Goo and Mongoose for those Montana pictures. My favorite country is up in the Northwest quandrant. Thus far I only have ridden a little in Oregon, but use to work in Idaho and Oregon in pre-MTB days. It is truely Gods country (cept for the winters 😉 ). That country up around Libby looks like it would be good mountain biking, maybe not as steep as some of the other mountains in Montana or Idaho. Did a road trip around there a few years ago.

While we are visiting Snowshoe, just down the road from Snowshoe is Slatyfork. Pretty much the center of back country type cross country riding in that area. I think Goo and Mongoose were discussing riding down a creek bed. That’s what Slatyfork is all about. Little piece of Canada got lost in West Virginia. Wet, rocky, and muddy. This pic came from last years Slatyfork Shuffle. I can’t quite tell from the photo which one of our crew this is – maybe Outdoornut can help me on this.
An hour or so to the east is one of my favorite rides; along top of Middle Mountain at Douthat State Park in much drier Virginia.
This is a great post. Keep bringing the pics; its geat to see everyones’ playgrounds……..

A tribute to the CCC era. Sadly its all grown over now, hope we can fix that soon. Sandy Gap Trail north of Douthat State Park in the George Washington National Forest.
A little south on the Jefferson National Forest. Lucky enough to have this in my back yard. Patterson Mountain Trails; another CCC era trail system. Not nearly as well built as Sandy Gap Trail. That crew must have had an umemployed engineer on board. 😆
Any of you Singleltrackers driving up to Snowshoe, you may be going past my house in (I-81 to Rt 220 in VA). PM me if you want to do a day of XC riding in VA on your way up.
Mongoose, Santos is on my list. Had hoped to get there this April, but life got in the way. Maybe next spring. Best to bring your own wheels? Is it worthy riding for an old guy doing strictly XC, no hucking for me (but I’d love to watch).

Some thing nice about internet is, you can see people far….. away.
This is in the middle of China, In our county, Biking was just started. we have a very little community on the net, ride twice a week.Yes, the money limits us form buying fancy bikes and running really tough trail, but see, get out the polluted cities, we have beautiful landscape too. 😀

Wow, that is so cool brother! Beautiful scenery definitely makes for a great ride. Glad to hear you guys are starting out some kind of MTB’ing program, thats absolutely great. I have been to China once to follick for fluorite crystal clusters at the Yaoquangxian mine in the remote Hunan province of China (near Chenzhou). I loved it their, and the people were very nice. Good luck brother and wishing you guys and gals great riding! 😃 😃
Yes, biking is really a nice thing, even for men who is tired of riding to work everyday in their lifes. This is the pics of a 75 mile one day trip two weeks before. some of the guys are over 40, and some were the first time ride out of town. that’s really tough for them, but no one said quit after got home, all were exciting and exhausted.Nearby our county, is a major city, biking has started quite a few years, some yong man/woman ride all kinds of bike, even downhill, but i like our little community more, it’s none commercial, and we are all newbies.
And this is the yellow river.

Yea Goo – great piece of singletrack / forest, right in the city. Inspires me everytime I ride there. Just dark enough the autoflash probably should have come on, but didn’t. Oh well. Your Georgia resevoirs are looking a lot fuller than last year. Same here in VA, won’t quit raining.

Yes it is! There are a couple steep sections but the ground is so soft that most falls wouldn’t hurt. There is another trail called "Joe’s Ridge" in the same area that is very similar but not as steep.
Funny thing is I have all these pictures when I go out of town but none here on my regular rides. We never stop for pictures.
Steve – The ride up Rim Road in Co Nat’l Monument isn’t really that bad but the descent is so much fun with all the twisting curves! Well worth it my friend!

One a friend of mine took of me at Raccoon Mountain in TN. For those who haven’t ridden here, it’s probably one of the best rides in the south east. That’s a man made rock dam on the right side of the pic. The trail builders built the trail right into the dam by laying out paver stones and filling it in with sand and pea gravel; it’s pretty ingenious. It’s kind of hard to tell from the pic, but the dam is about 6-7 stories high at it’s apex. To give you some perspective, those are full grown pines on the left of the picture and I am 6 feet tall. The rest of the 17miles of trail has some pretty sweet views too. -

Cowles is pretty sweet. (at least coming down; up is a bit of a PITA. A bit over 1400′ in about 2 miles, see below, with a bazillion of those waterboards to hop. Been working to improve my game going up. probably close to 70% up, and now 99% down. There’s one spot I still chicken out and walk on the way down.)
And those AK shots by AKDan are very nice. Made me a bit homesick. We’ve been hanging out around San Diego since January. Really digging the weather, but after spendin almost my whole life in AK, I’m feeling slightly cheated out of daylight this time of year. 😛 Summertime days are supposed to be bright ALL day, darn it!.

Checked out the rest of the "24 hours…" pics you shot on your site. You have some SERIOUSLY awesome scenery out there! I’m REALLLLLLY jealous right now. 😢 Hope you don’t mind me linking a few extras you took.
I sat and stared at these pics for almost a half an hour in an emotional mix of what could be described as both awe and agony. [i:12yx2v9g]Awe[/i:12yx2v9g] because sometimes I forget about the immense beauty that’s at a our very fingertips as Americans. [i:12yx2v9g]Agony[/i:12yx2v9g], because there’s no way I can get out and enjoy these places right now. Work, class, family, and a nagging herniated disc in my back have all but ruined my summer. 😢

That little skinny resides just a few km from me. In the DVP..There are alot of those…Some are a bit higher….Actually not too hard to ride…Just remember …..Bail to the left. They did remove that paticular one..There was two segments that started to rot. so they now changed it and cleared around it a bit more.
-
July 8, 2009 at 20:43 #79682
The trick to them bro is not to look at them but rather where they end. If you look to the left or right your eyes (and your body) will follow. Like you I have had issues with them but learned to keep my eyes focused on the exit of the skinny. Above all use your waist as the balance and not steering to keep yourself on track.

why bail to the left? couldn’t you hit your derailleur/drive train that way? or is there some better reason?

In South Central AK Aug and Sept traditionally get more rain as it gets closer to winter, also that late in the year a lot of trails will have been taken over by mother nature until winter kills off the brush and we start all over the next spring. This photo was also taken on the Johnson Pass tr that same day last week- can you say bear country?
Really there are many trails that are ridable all the way up to and after it snows, depends on elevation, ect.

Nope. Thankfully I’ve never even had to unholster it it in defense. (I have popped the snap a few times.) Had 4 bears on one ride once, up Eklutna Lake trail, but everyone behaved themselves. Your first guess was correct, it’s a .44.

Think I’ll pass on the 50cal. That .44 with 4" barrel is bad enough with a bear load in it. 😉 I don’t even want to think about a 2 3/4" barrel popping a 50 cal slug…

Tell that to my friend who broke his back when he hit the ground.
The guy is ok now but had to have screws put into his spine.I’ve been indoor rock climbing before and it was fun but the outdoor stuff scares the crap out of me. I’m too much of a newb and the fact is, I don’t generally trust other people with my life.

Free falling? In climbing its "free climbing" which means you climb without pro (protection) In my opinion=stupid. The picture of the climber is leading a climb. You can tell this by no rope above but rope below. While he climbs he places pro in. If he falls he falls twice the distance of him to the last pro placed.
Having done both, climbing done correctly is safer than mt biking.

sir, you are correct on most points except one. "Free climbing" does not mean climbing without protection. Free climbing means that the only way you ascend the cliff is with the use of body parts. The use of gear in free climbing is ONLY for protection. This differs from Aid climbing, where gear is used in the ascent of the cliff. So basically, rock climbing=free climbing.
Now if you were to Free Solo, that would be climbing without pro.
-
July 19, 2009 at 11:42 #79719
I always heard it how I mentioned it. However I did check and you are right, what I always heard as "free climbing" is free solo. i actually never heard it that way when i climbed on a regular basis.

Idaho seems like one of those places that’s flying under the radar for mountain biking. It has some sweet terrain but you rarely ever hear of any major trails out there and it never gets the love like Utah, and Colorado even though it’s right next door.

i think idaho flies under the radar for almost everything mountain related. i’ve heard a bit about it bc i lived less than a hundred miles from there, but still rarely heard little about biking, skiing, climbing, or much of anything in idaho.

These were actually in Virginia. Trails in the 2 states are similar, but WV trails are wetter and rootier and VA trails are shaley – especially on the sidehill trails.
Dauw – awesome Idaho pics and trails. Rode through Stanley a couple of years ago coming from Boise to see a friend in Salmon. Thats wonderful country out there.. I think Idaho has some of the steepest and wildest country in the lower 48. I worked in White Bird for a fire season once. You couldn’t even pick up a radio station there.
Those trails look pretty buff and bermy. 😀

Bet you’ll like it. They’re grippy little buggers, esp if you run the rear "backwards." I really like the front end performance as well. Since I mounted these, I’ve yet to wash out the front on steep loose downs under heavy braking. Can’t say the same about the priors. (course, now that I said that, I’ll probably eat it tomorrow. 😛

Post up a photo that you think is pretty sweet. Could be one you’ve taken, or one you found; somebody riding, a snap shot of a sweet trail, or some epic scenery that you saw while riding. Cool pics. We were just talking about how slick wood bridges are on another post. Do these have some kind of texture to keep them from getting slick? The wood bridge I’ve been on in the Monoghelia (sp?) National Forest are like covered in soap suds hahaha. One tap on a brake or just lean the wrong way and you are face down pulling splinters out of your teeth.
Is the whole trail wooden, or just parts over swampland? Anyway – cool stuff, thanks for sharing the pics.

August 27, 2009 at 15:38 #79773
This trail is the only one in Alaska that I have seen the wooden threads at other than a few small bridges. Most the trails here are good old dirt paths. So I doubt the perm-a-frost has anything to do with the decision to build most of this trail out of above ground wooden bridges. Most of it is build out of wood above the ground but there are sections that are plain old dirt, the only terrain it might have been built to avoid is roots. It’s more likely it was done this way to be unique; because this trail was built by and maintained by Alyeska Ski Resort (It’s free to ride any of their trails in the summer).
Other then the wire mesh in places where you will need to brake there is no real texture to the wood but the first time I rode it, it rained the night before and I had no trouble with slippage. The trail is brand new so that might have something to do with it.
😼 If you ever find yourself up here it is one of many trails to ride! 😼

Most wooden features kind of intimidate me, but the trail you have pics of looks inviting and fun. Those West Virginia bridges I mentioned earlier are probably so slick because it rains there almost every day and moss and other organisms move in giving the banana peel effect. I went out ridding the STA trails here in Anchorage and took the time my 2nd time through the network to stop and take a few pictures. These trails are new (opened this spring) and they are becoming very popular because they are right here within the Anchorage city limits.
The trail head… Had to show off the ride lol
The climb to get into the network
One of the many steep root covered climbs
One of 4 rock climbs in the network
A nice little root obstical.
The view from the highest point in the network
A 6 inch wide log bridge
Your choice, jump off the rock or root or go around
Fast and steep downhill with a rock jump
One of the many banked curves through out the network
Me getting a little air time
The reason I need to learn how to ride clipless pedals! lol
I posted this trail to the Alaska trail reviews this morning , check it out… http://www.singletracks.com/bike-trails/sta-trails.html

Yeah, those are some grandiose pics JDH.Deffinately post up some more if you got em,I cant get enough of that Alaskan wilderness.I got an itch to ride there for sure.Me and CCR will be up before it snows, hahahahaaha.
Not sure if the state could handle both of us at one time Steve, but maybe we should give it a try. JDH whats for dinner hehehe?
JDH thats a nice looking new trail system. Its really great when you have a trail system close by – just makes you ride more . Many riders in the area?
Goo – thats some rooty looking stuff. Caked in Georgia clay too.

LOL CCR, I think Alaska is plenty big enough for both you and Steve. As for dinner, well any respectable Alaskan or anyone that’s been here for a year or more, would be able to pull either Salmon or Halibut out of the freezer for dinner.
The STA trail system is very nice and super close. I find myself there 3-5 days a week but it is starting to get crowed after work. Good thing they have a second phase already in the planning/approval process.
Goo, sorry I broke the thread rule “1. One photo per postâ€

Yes.
Made use of my helmet there. The ground was slightly damp and when my back tire hit that root at the bottom left of the pic (at an angle), the bike slid out from under me. Being clipped in, i had no chance to do anything and my head hit the root in the middle of the pic. Had i not been wearing a helmet, i might have been laying there for a bit.

By linking together the Primrose Tr, down the Lost Lake tr, 6 miles north on the highway and then the Iditarod tr back to the Primrose Campground we were able to put together a 30 mile route with just under ‘4000 of climbing all in the pouring rain. Good Times!

Maybe a little off topic, but, is there a way to tell if a pic has been edited or not without the poster having specifically mentioned it? Is it somewhere in the code of the pic or is there some sort of software that would have a "resort to original" option. I’m always wondering how some people come up with their shots and just how much editing they do before the final version.

I use a Canon SX10is but I will be upgrading it to the SX1is or the SX20is some time soon. Just so I can post better photos for all you folks.
-
November 8, 2009 at 20:20 #79843
Yea Im also shooting with the Canon, and SX 100 IS.
Mine is almost 3 years old so the model #’s may have changed in recent years. I have found that IS (image stabilization) is the key, that and set the camera to save the largest file possible, even if you are going to shrink it later it still makes a big difference. -
November 9, 2009 at 07:53 #79844
I’m not sure how serious you are about photography but for about $200 bucks more you can get into Canon’s DSLR models and really step into the beginings of a pro model camera. The DSLRs allow you to change out lenses and come standard with a lot more options that will help your picture taking out immensely. Trek7k and I both frequently carry around our DSLRs on rides and we have yet to have any issues. However, a nice camera and nice glass in your pack does tend to make you think twice about bombing down certain rocks and jumps. 😉

I was reading an article on that stuff and it said that it is some of the best stuff that any rider could ever ride on. i dont know if it means permafrost or not. i’m just going off what it said in the article…i think it was in teh recent issue bike magazine.

thats cool. yeah the article used the term "heavenly traction". but you have better experience with it than some writer probably.
-
November 25, 2009 at 15:54 #79888frozen mud"?
It’s cool because your actually riding on ice and think your gonna slip at any moment but never do,hahahaha,so yeah it’s cool. You can really feel the bike’s geometry kick in when your on the frozen mud as well,it’s like the bike is standing up and is full of energy and it just bee lines it’s way down the trail all the while riding through this really cool off road terrain that seems like pavement but is forgiving at the same time, and is just a fun and challenging to ride because although the bike never slips or anything, you still need to pay attention while riding it.
If you’ve never ridin frozen mud you should, ahahahaha. This is kinda funny because I’m a colorado native and have ridden frozen stuff my whole life and never thought of it as a cool magezine buzz feature that get’s written up for all to read and try..hahahaha. -

I seriously love that drop bro, and you make it look even more fun than it looks. I would have some real serious fun on that one, though I am not too game on the sugar sand down below, but its still do-able even so. Great pics pics once more bro! 😄You da gravity man![/quote:20rg4j5y]Thanks, yeah it was a fun ass drop I did it several times but the big wheel kept getting buried 10" in the sand so i couldn’t roll out. I even brought in some thick cardboard sheets to lay over the drop area, but still no go. oh well, made a good still though.

Well this isn’t scrap-booking, a smelly candle party or rock climbing- this is Mountain Biking! Statistically it is 85% male dominate, go figure. However I have to add here I spent last weekend photographing a race outside of Phoenix that had more women participating than I had ever seen before.
Looking through the photos afterward its easy to see the smiles and the genuine fun all the ladies were having. Its not just that women instinctively know to smile when you point a camera at them (men still have to be reminded), but they were really enjoying being out there on the trail, was great to see.
Here is a link to the pics. Fair warning; there are over 300 pics here in order for al the riders to see thier pics http://www.pbase.com/takeyouphotography … ltdown2010

ak dan, what do you do for a living? do you photograph professionally?
-
January 16, 2010 at 17:50 #79912ak dan, what do you do for a living? do you photograph professionally?
No, I sure don’t, if I were to make it a job I probably wouldn’t enjoy it so much. Photography has just been an ongoing hobby for the last 30 years, its one of them that if your not careful you can dump a whole lot of money into. Kinda like… hmmm.
LOL!My employment the last few years has granted me a lot of free time to roadtrip, hike & ride the mountain bike and I always carry a camera of one sort or another. I now find myself unemployed so that means a lot of free time, I just got lucky being in Phoenix at the same place they were holding the race at. Most of these riders are members of the MBAA who puts together trail crews and maintains a lot of the trails I have enjoyed riding while in this area, this is a way I can give back.

AKDan,
Were you at the Jan 31 race at White Tank Mountains? That’s a nice track out there. I’m in Phoenix too, usually out at North Mountain, Hawes, or McDowell Mtn. track. Nothing fancy, but if you wanna tour anything lemme know. I usually get away on Sundays and Mondays for longer rides.
I have a tough time making it out to the races, as I work on Saturdays. I remember you saying you want to do Black Canyon Trail, I am going to try to get out there in about 3 weeks on a Sunday. Let me know if you’re interested.

So Im wandering around the Red Mountain trails network in Mesa last week and run across a little used trail that is unsigned and not on the map. Turned out to be a newly built loop off of the main trail that was only a mile long but a very fun ride! There was a lot of advance planning and labor involved in making this trail as fun as it is and also built to be sustainable over time. I love these kinds of trails but while traveling very seldom get to meet the people who actually did the work to build them. So if you are part of a local trails organization or even just get out there and volunteer a weekend or two a year in your area, thank you. I do try to volunteer when Im in one place long enough to do so, and if you haven’t yet remember, we are all in this together-

Yea no doubt. I watch the news when I can and see the country getting hammered weather-wise. A whole lot of this country has been in a drought state for several years, all this snow has got to help that. Hang on, it cant last forever. Staying in a tent during an El Nino year even in the SW has been an adventure to say the least. This roadtrip Im on is the result of being laid off months ago and has lasted longer than I thought it would for sure. But in doing my best to travel cheap and stay positive about things I have ventured into some country and ridden some areas I never thought I would see. Im not sure when or where this is all going to end, but it’s a new day here.
Life is a trip, take it.

Like a monkey maybe, one that is trying to hang onto a vine. Funny, I think its the look of concentration. Probably like the look Shawn White had on his face when he was 20+ feet above the top of the half-pipe yesterday. 😆 Anyway, very cool. Glad your son enjoys ripping the same stuff you do. Kuddo’s to GIRO.
In hindsight it was clearly a case of not enough momentum to carry the appropriate angle of lift far enough forward resulting in premature decrease in the attack angle landing my front wheel in the deep gap well before the anticipated safe zone.- Yes it hurt.
I hit my head harder than I can ever remember hitting it before. The gushing of blood from my elbow and alarming amount of pain from inside my shoulder made me forget all about my head within seconds. After all said and done the Giro helmet took one hell of a hit, and left me with not so much as even a slight headache. (20 hours later the shoulder is still questionable)
Im sure other helmets could absorb this too but having actually test drove this particular one myself Im off too town in hopes of finding the exact same model.
See you on the trail. -

I think Giro has a crash replacement program. Get in touch with them. I think they’ll sell you a replacement at a big discount…not sure what the time line is on something like that.

OUCH, I did something similar on Johnson Pass last summer… The trail was over grown and I was tired, ended up missing one of those small 2 foot wide wash outs close to the Moose Pass exit, endo’d into a nice sized rock. It wasn’t fun.
Hope the shoulder is ok.

Hey thanks gang. The shoulder is getting better, not ride ready yet but getting better by the day.
In my search for a new helmet I wasn’t able to locate the same exact model but I did run across a RIFT which is the same one I have and really like in Alaska. Flat black which is good but it had this annoying yellow stripe- closer inspection revealed it was part of the LIVESTRONG line up. You know, Lance’s cancer org. Talking with the young guy at the shop he said it didn’t really match his bike and was overkill- even I wondered if maybe the helmet was a little ‘much’, and bought a different model that was nothing special.
Last night laying in my tent trying to find a position that wasn’t killing my shoulder I wondered what answer I would get if I asked that question of someone who has cancer – ?
See you on the trail. You will surely be able to see me… -

Off to the right it is level, but it looks like directly behind him is a drop off which he could have jumped going his direction. Of course, years ago I was cruising down a non-technical section of singletrack and somehow grabbed my front brake. I went over the bars and my bike went 20 feet down the hill side resting against a tree. I was glad it wasn’t the other way around. My point is, sometimes stuff just happens!

My wife and I have very much been considering moving to Oregon next year around late spring or at latest 2012, and this pic just entices me even more to take the leap. Just so much beautiful landscape for MTB’ing, but especially for FR & DH. I can also go gem follicking in SE Oregon. My three favorite hobbies…..MTB’ing, gem follicking, and camping in the great outdoors. We were going to move to Montana the other year for MTB’ing and gem follicking, but Montana is not a very bike friendly place, though the gem follicking and great outdoors is great. Oh well![/quote:27wm00by]

Bend is such a cool place. I think if I ever move West that is probably where i would go too. A dry spot in a wet state. Much of eastern Oregon looks more like Nevada than what you normally think of for the Northwest. When I lived in Oakridge, we would go to "The East Side" to dry out after several months of rain. Lava tubes there are neat too. Never really heard too much about the free ride stuff there, but they have a strong mountain bike scene on both sides of the mountain. Idaho and Montana are great too. Only down side I have heard of Bend is the cost of living and employment opportunities. If you move there Chili I might just come visit sometime.

Chicopee is still my favorite "in-town" ride. Well maintained, but not overly maintained like Blankets. It may be 45 minutes outside of the perimeter but anything within an hour is in-town by my standards. 😀

Caldwell is right in the Snake River Valley, I cannot wait to spend summers up there riding those trails. Going up to Wyo. on the 20th for a nice pack trip riding horses about 60miles just south of Yellowstone NP. Closer to Dubois…These pictures are keeping me sane until then…Not a fan of Texas.

rode Keg Creek and part of Bartram (11/23)
the "rock crossing" on one of the many creek crossings. You drop in about 2-3 feet (both sides) and ride across on the rock which is about 15 feet). It is very slick when wet. First is looking up stream at it. the second is how it looks when riding ccw

Indeed, this is a sweet photo!
Now for one of mine:
Sticking with the theme of a cloudy panorama, this is the view of the Maroon Bells Wilderness from the top of the Trail 401 ride in Crested Butte, Colorado

Haven’t read all the pages, but you can actually use google to crawl images on the site if you want.
Just put site:singletracks.com at the end of your google search. So, for BMC full suspension pictures, just put
bmc full suspension site:singletracks.com
into the google query bar.
You guys need to post more pics of BMC FS bikes 🙂
