So I’ve been thinking… with 16,412+ mountain bike photos here on singletracks, there are way way way too many photos for us all to sift through and look at. So, I was thinking, since we know have a super-slick "share" link on the photo pages, we should "share" photos on here.
Post up a photo that you think is pretty sweet. Could be one you’ve taken, or one you found; somebody riding, a snap shot of a sweet trail, or some epic scenery that you saw while riding. Whatever it is, we’ll all get to check out some of the sweetest photos on singletracks, including a whole bunch that maybe don’t have a whole bunch of "five" ratings and are pretty hidden.
Here’s one I took to start it off:
From Whitefish, Montana (in the northwest corner)

I will simply say this is CA. Legal to ride but almost always bike free, can’t advertise something like that and keep it that way.

Most of mine are with a cheap Kodak Easyshare.
A few are with my wife’s Canon Digital SLR.
All of these and these are with my Kodak.
My wife got me the Kodak at Walmart for the price linked above, but I have also seen it cheaper at online retailers.
I should also mention that I fix the colors and white balance in Paint.net, which is a freeware photo editing tool.
-
June 4, 2009 at 12:22 #79556
Yeah, I need to purchase a new camera to take on the trails. The digital I have is a little large (and expensive) to take out. Last week I used a Target disposable. I hope some of them turned out.

I use a Canon PowerShot A540. The whole Canon PowerShot line is excellent, and is a doable price range.
This isn’t one I’ve taken, but is going to be my next great bike expedition: Tsali. I have to ride it, if only to say that i’ve ridden it. My girlfriend and I are planning a trip up there in the not-too-distant future.

It isn’t the camera that makes the great picture, it is the person behind the camera. These pictures came from people who recognized something interesting and took a picture. If you want to create good pictures then watch what is going on around you and if you see something that might be visually interesting stop and take a shot using whatever camera you have. If you are like me a lot of it will be junk and will end up being deleted, but if you keep doing it eventually you will get lucky and capture something good. If you are really serious then you can take a photography course or read some books about photo composition — that can make a big difference. (Maybe someday I will take my own advice…)
So just have fun on the trail and keep the camera where it is easy to grab. You will get some good shots if you think about it and take the opportunity to take a picture instead of riding on without stopping.
-
June 5, 2009 at 09:37 #79562
I would disagree, but only a little.
90% or more of the picture us seeing something worth taking a picture of, like you said, but there are definitely some bad cameras out there that will not let you capture what you see.
I’ve learned a lot about framing and composition from watching my wife, who is a photographer, but you still need a camera with at least basic functionality.
I have a cheapy Kodak easyshare that is thin and fits nicely in my jersey pocket, but also accurately photographs what I point it at.
Another tip is to play with settings and presets on your camera, snap the same photo with several different settings and see what comes out the best.
Also, use your saddle or handlebars as an impromptu "tripod" to stabilize the camera.
Anyway, that’s all I got, and here’s another pic I took with the Kodak last night.
I edited this picture in the free program paint.net and darkened it 5 steps, increased the contrast 5 steps, and increased the saturation 10%. I apply those same settings to pretty much all my pics. -

Thanks you guys! I have to admit I am about a year behind in posting to it though.. D’oh! Check back in a few days and Ill have another folder for ‘09 trips.
Beautiful bike Maddslacker!
Reading through the posts here I could morph a lot of the ideas here and they pretty much spell out how I feel about my photography-Like Boinked said- always carry a camera. Probably why I have went back to the smaller P&S that are easier to pack along rather than the SLR’s. Plus todays camera technology is putting so many brains into smaller packages its really easy to get a nice camera that is also small enough to carry.
I use Irfanview photo program and have for years, I don’t even know much about any of the expensive/elaborate programs. I try too take a good picture in the field rather than fix it later, that said I always end up bumping up the contrast and tuning down the gamma settings just like everyone else.
And learn to stop and take the shot, even if your not sure its gonna work out, 1 out of 10 is my usual rate of return for good pics (hey remember when we all shot with film and had to pay for all them mistakes? I do… D’oh!). Composition is very important but somehting that you pick up over time with practice. Im quite often riding somewhere I may never be again so Im constantly reminding myself to capture some of it, plus I have a niece & nephew that need to understand it’s a big wild world and they should go see it! If I can influence them in a good way my time here is a success.

I realize that composition has a lot to do with the pictures and I have read several articles about taking outdoor/sport related pictures. It just always seems that the photo never does the scene justice; either the steep hills look smaller than reality, or the subject looks further away than they really are, or they appear washed out. There is only so much editing/enhancing that can be done. Oh well I’ll just keep at it and study as much material as I can. You guys really have some inspirational pics though.

Gnarly is pretty much the right description for Dragons Back. Layers and layers of flat rocks that protrude out of the ground at all angles make it a an interesting but pretty hard ride. The ridge is about 10-12 miles long and has patches of this type of rock scattered throughout.
Buddy of mine calls these Dragon Scales. I watch for those, but for some reason I don’t get any more flats there than other places I ride.
Some more photos here from the Dragon.

CCR, is that some form of shale or slate rock? As a gemologist, I get interested in rocks and minerals like those in your pic. Still looks like some sick looking terrain to have fun on. 😄
Mongoose, I don’t think its shale or slate. The lower slopes of that ridge have what we call shale. Rock that kind of delaminates into thin sheets when you hit it hard. The stuff on top is hard, more like limestone. Sorry, don’t know my rocks too well. Will have to ask my rocktomologist buddy sometime (did I just invent that word?). Rocks always intrigue me, wish I knew more about them. Some of Natures artwork.

Dude, turn around,I think were in the same boat, hahahahahahahahahaaha.
We have a place called Dinasour Ridge up at Dakota Ridge and somtimes when I’m up there I wish I knew more abut all that cool ass looking rock, especially where there are dinasour prints in the rock.Recently, they closed down the road that goes up and over Dakota Ridge to make it more tourist freindly and to probably help preserve the place as well since it is a huge tourist attraction. But man, somtimes I just have to ignore it so I can keep on riding, cant always have your cake and eat too I guess. -

I have rode Big Mountain, Bill Creek, and a couple other ones in the WhiteFish area. I have also rode Lone Pine, and a few more over in Kalispell area. Wolf Creek Trail near BigFork. Emerald Lake near Bozeman among a few other places I do not remember the names. When I do go to Montana, I am normally in the Helena, Butte, to Missoula area to follick for Montana sapphire. I also try to go and visit a friend whom has a ranch up in Whitefish, MT when I am that way. If you have lived in WhiteFish, you may know of them. Michael & Pam Rozell, which own and operate the Potters Field Ministries Ranch near WhiteFish. I noticed from your blog that you are a youth minister, so thats why I mentioned the Rozell’s. Thanks Goo and Mongoose for those Montana pictures. My favorite country is up in the Northwest quandrant. Thus far I only have ridden a little in Oregon, but use to work in Idaho and Oregon in pre-MTB days. It is truely Gods country (cept for the winters 😉 ). That country up around Libby looks like it would be good mountain biking, maybe not as steep as some of the other mountains in Montana or Idaho. Did a road trip around there a few years ago.

While we are visiting Snowshoe, just down the road from Snowshoe is Slatyfork. Pretty much the center of back country type cross country riding in that area. I think Goo and Mongoose were discussing riding down a creek bed. That’s what Slatyfork is all about. Little piece of Canada got lost in West Virginia. Wet, rocky, and muddy. This pic came from last years Slatyfork Shuffle. I can’t quite tell from the photo which one of our crew this is – maybe Outdoornut can help me on this.
An hour or so to the east is one of my favorite rides; along top of Middle Mountain at Douthat State Park in much drier Virginia.
This is a great post. Keep bringing the pics; its geat to see everyones’ playgrounds……..

A tribute to the CCC era. Sadly its all grown over now, hope we can fix that soon. Sandy Gap Trail north of Douthat State Park in the George Washington National Forest.
A little south on the Jefferson National Forest. Lucky enough to have this in my back yard. Patterson Mountain Trails; another CCC era trail system. Not nearly as well built as Sandy Gap Trail. That crew must have had an umemployed engineer on board. 😆
Any of you Singleltrackers driving up to Snowshoe, you may be going past my house in (I-81 to Rt 220 in VA). PM me if you want to do a day of XC riding in VA on your way up.
Mongoose, Santos is on my list. Had hoped to get there this April, but life got in the way. Maybe next spring. Best to bring your own wheels? Is it worthy riding for an old guy doing strictly XC, no hucking for me (but I’d love to watch).

Some thing nice about internet is, you can see people far….. away.
This is in the middle of China, In our county, Biking was just started. we have a very little community on the net, ride twice a week.Yes, the money limits us form buying fancy bikes and running really tough trail, but see, get out the polluted cities, we have beautiful landscape too. 😀

Wow, that is so cool brother! Beautiful scenery definitely makes for a great ride. Glad to hear you guys are starting out some kind of MTB’ing program, thats absolutely great. I have been to China once to follick for fluorite crystal clusters at the Yaoquangxian mine in the remote Hunan province of China (near Chenzhou). I loved it their, and the people were very nice. Good luck brother and wishing you guys and gals great riding! 😃 😃
Yes, biking is really a nice thing, even for men who is tired of riding to work everyday in their lifes. This is the pics of a 75 mile one day trip two weeks before. some of the guys are over 40, and some were the first time ride out of town. that’s really tough for them, but no one said quit after got home, all were exciting and exhausted.Nearby our county, is a major city, biking has started quite a few years, some yong man/woman ride all kinds of bike, even downhill, but i like our little community more, it’s none commercial, and we are all newbies.
And this is the yellow river.

Yea Goo – great piece of singletrack / forest, right in the city. Inspires me everytime I ride there. Just dark enough the autoflash probably should have come on, but didn’t. Oh well. Your Georgia resevoirs are looking a lot fuller than last year. Same here in VA, won’t quit raining.

Yes it is! There are a couple steep sections but the ground is so soft that most falls wouldn’t hurt. There is another trail called "Joe’s Ridge" in the same area that is very similar but not as steep.
Funny thing is I have all these pictures when I go out of town but none here on my regular rides. We never stop for pictures.
Steve – The ride up Rim Road in Co Nat’l Monument isn’t really that bad but the descent is so much fun with all the twisting curves! Well worth it my friend!

One a friend of mine took of me at Raccoon Mountain in TN. For those who haven’t ridden here, it’s probably one of the best rides in the south east. That’s a man made rock dam on the right side of the pic. The trail builders built the trail right into the dam by laying out paver stones and filling it in with sand and pea gravel; it’s pretty ingenious. It’s kind of hard to tell from the pic, but the dam is about 6-7 stories high at it’s apex. To give you some perspective, those are full grown pines on the left of the picture and I am 6 feet tall. The rest of the 17miles of trail has some pretty sweet views too. -

Cowles is pretty sweet. (at least coming down; up is a bit of a PITA. A bit over 1400′ in about 2 miles, see below, with a bazillion of those waterboards to hop. Been working to improve my game going up. probably close to 70% up, and now 99% down. There’s one spot I still chicken out and walk on the way down.)
And those AK shots by AKDan are very nice. Made me a bit homesick. We’ve been hanging out around San Diego since January. Really digging the weather, but after spendin almost my whole life in AK, I’m feeling slightly cheated out of daylight this time of year. 😛 Summertime days are supposed to be bright ALL day, darn it!.

Checked out the rest of the "24 hours…" pics you shot on your site. You have some SERIOUSLY awesome scenery out there! I’m REALLLLLLY jealous right now. 😢 Hope you don’t mind me linking a few extras you took.
I sat and stared at these pics for almost a half an hour in an emotional mix of what could be described as both awe and agony. [i:12yx2v9g]Awe[/i:12yx2v9g] because sometimes I forget about the immense beauty that’s at a our very fingertips as Americans. [i:12yx2v9g]Agony[/i:12yx2v9g], because there’s no way I can get out and enjoy these places right now. Work, class, family, and a nagging herniated disc in my back have all but ruined my summer. 😢
Thank God for places of beauty like those and websites like this one to share them with the rest of us.

That little skinny resides just a few km from me. In the DVP..There are alot of those…Some are a bit higher….Actually not too hard to ride…Just remember …..Bail to the left. They did remove that paticular one..There was two segments that started to rot. so they now changed it and cleared around it a bit more.
-
July 8, 2009 at 20:43 #79682
The trick to them bro is not to look at them but rather where they end. If you look to the left or right your eyes (and your body) will follow. Like you I have had issues with them but learned to keep my eyes focused on the exit of the skinny. Above all use your waist as the balance and not steering to keep yourself on track.

why bail to the left? couldn’t you hit your derailleur/drive train that way? or is there some better reason?

In South Central AK Aug and Sept traditionally get more rain as it gets closer to winter, also that late in the year a lot of trails will have been taken over by mother nature until winter kills off the brush and we start all over the next spring. This photo was also taken on the Johnson Pass tr that same day last week- can you say bear country?
Really there are many trails that are ridable all the way up to and after it snows, depends on elevation, ect.

Nope. Thankfully I’ve never even had to unholster it it in defense. (I have popped the snap a few times.) Had 4 bears on one ride once, up Eklutna Lake trail, but everyone behaved themselves. Your first guess was correct, it’s a .44.

[quote="ChiliPepper":gy3m10rg]Xerien, have you ever had the opportunity to knock down a bear with that, well what looks like a .44 or .357? Well, you sure do not have to worry about anyone bothering you at least.

You need one of these.

Think I’ll pass on the 50cal. That .44 with 4" barrel is bad enough with a bear load in it. 😉 I don’t even want to think about a 2 3/4" barrel popping a 50 cal slug…

No thanks..Its the falling I am worried about….Least on a bike it will break my fall to a degree…If I fall there I will just break.

Tell that to my friend who broke his back when he hit the ground.
The guy is ok now but had to have screws put into his spine.I’ve been indoor rock climbing before and it was fun but the outdoor stuff scares the crap out of me. I’m too much of a newb and the fact is, I don’t generally trust other people with my life.

Sorry Goo, but you fall off a bike, you just go ouch, but you free-fall off the side of a mountain….."You go splat!"…..or other words known as 6 feet under. I have rappelled many times in the military and in the fire department and I know how rope works bro. It can break, fray, and give! Sorry bro, I’ll stick to falling off a bike instead! 😉[/quote:24nbmkin]you have to know your equipment, and know how to take care of it. relatively safe sport if you know what you’re doing. (i’m not talking trad here)
worst mtb injury: serious concussion
worst climbing injury: scraped armbut then again, i’ve done a lot more biking than i have climbing.

Free falling? In climbing its "free climbing" which means you climb without pro (protection) In my opinion=stupid. The picture of the climber is leading a climb. You can tell this by no rope above but rope below. While he climbs he places pro in. If he falls he falls twice the distance of him to the last pro placed.
Having done both, climbing done correctly is safer than mt biking.

sir, you are correct on most points except one. "Free climbing" does not mean climbing without protection. Free climbing means that the only way you ascend the cliff is with the use of body parts. The use of gear in free climbing is ONLY for protection. This differs from Aid climbing, where gear is used in the ascent of the cliff. So basically, rock climbing=free climbing.
Now if you were to Free Solo, that would be climbing without pro.

I always heard it how I mentioned it. However I did check and you are right, what I always heard as "free climbing" is free solo. i actually never heard it that way when i climbed on a regular basis.

A few from my ride weekend before last – between rains. Ferrier Trail:
Site of my perfect Endo.
Not sure how I came out of it without a scratch.
Was a bit more careful after that.
Looped back on Lick Branch trail.
Lots of hike a bike with many creek crossings – but quite beautiful. -

Idaho seems like one of those places that’s flying under the radar for mountain biking. It has some sweet terrain but you rarely ever hear of any major trails out there and it never gets the love like Utah, and Colorado even though it’s right next door.

I’ve had this as my new desktop at work. Enjoy.
Yet another MUST ride trail before I die.

i think idaho flies under the radar for almost everything mountain related. i’ve heard a bit about it bc i lived less than a hundred miles from there, but still rarely heard little about biking, skiing, climbing, or much of anything in idaho.
ps that trail looks incredible!!!

These were actually in Virginia. Trails in the 2 states are similar, but WV trails are wetter and rootier and VA trails are shaley – especially on the sidehill trails.
Dauw – awesome Idaho pics and trails. Rode through Stanley a couple of years ago coming from Boise to see a friend in Sa
