Measuring gaps and drops,what’s the proper way?

I have been wondering about this and how to go about it correctly.Do you measure from the lip of the drop,to the average back tire landing,at whatever angle that may be for a drop? Or would that be more like measuring vertical,from the rear tire landing to the height of the lip, as if putting a giant square on it?

I was thinking a gap would be from the lip of the launch,horizontally to the landing,be it a gap jump or a drop to transition.
