Help is needed for two new trails on Suffolk County’s North Shore.
One is the Port Jefferson/Wading River Rails to Trails ROW. It runs from just east of where the soon to be completed Setauket Greeway Trail ends in Port Jefferson to Wading River just north of the north end of the Calverton MB Trail. Suffolk County Gov’t is reluctant to push it because home owners adjacent to the ROW are afraid the existing vadalism and atv problems would be increased. Of course we know the opposite would happen. Plus the eastern end of the trail is a good place to rest and buy some refreshments which the local community always lizes to hear. The next public comment meeting will be set up soon. Please check out the links below to learn more and how to contact Sarah S. Anker to add your voice. Remember to emphasize this would attract responsible bikers to the area who would also act as trail monitors and would spend money in the community.

The other is the Hike/Bike Trail 11 miles around the former Grumman Calverton property in Calverton. This trail starts across the street from the start of the Calverton MB Trail on the north and passes by the entrance to hiking trails along the head waters of the Peconic River on the south side. Recently the Town of Riverhead has opened a town park on the north side with a parking lot and ball fields. The town though has not completed the trail because of infighting on the Town Board concerning the sale of commercial properties along the north side along State RT25. It’s always about the money. Adding a refreshment stand in the town park with the completion of the trail would make it a great place start or to end a ride from Calverton or Riverhead to Port Jefferson or Setauket. Please contact the Riverhead Town Board members with the links below to tell them you want to see this trail completed and are looking forward to visiting Riverhead Town.
