New to the forum and just looking for some advice on buying my first fat bike.
So I was pretty much convinced and was going to purchase a motobecane from bikes direct. BUT then I found an indiegogo campaign for Chub fatbikes. Current price is $459 and they say shipping late sept. It’s definitely cheaper than what I was looking at but I’m still a little paranoid about buying something from a crowdfund source. I’m pretty much new to anything about bikes so don’t know much about components or anything honestly.
Comparing this http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/motobecane/fat-bikes/fat-bikes-boris-x5-fatbikes.htm to https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/chub-fat-tire-bikes#/story what do you think?
I’m going to using it for a winter commute for a lot of the winter. 5 miles each way. But will use it for trail riding as well.
Like I said I’m pretty much still lost in picking out a bike and any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Alright, I was completely prepared to begin telling you how it was irresponsible to throw your money at something as insubstantial as a funding campaign and how you might as well light it on fire or better yet, mail it to me.
Then I visited the page.
I’ll probably be buying a crowd funded fat bike. I still can’t speak against you mailing me money, however.

Chub bikes are legit. A few of us have ridden their 29+ and it’s a great bike. I’m guessing these aren’t made in the USA like their previous bikes but having ridden with the guys, they’re good people and I would trust them.

Nice to hear it guys. Thanks for the advice and responses. Been hard to get a response everywhere else.

Dude, sorry. I was thinking Chumba when I wrote my response. 🙂 However, we did write about this campaign a little while back:
The price is low but there are less expensive fat bikes out there, making me believe it is entirely feasible for them to deliver the bikes at these prices.

Haha yeah those Chumba’s are WAY out of my price range. I’m just looking for something that will survive an Upstate NY winter and some light trail rides.
I just talked to them on facebook, they said they’re about 3 weeks out from delivery.

One of the Chub backers recently alerted us to the fact that the bikes weren’t delivered in September as promised. Not that it’s a big surprise–these crowd funded campaigns rarely come in on time. But still, it’s frustrating to anyone who plunked down the cash. Take a look at this comment thread to get caught up on the latest:
