I’m new to hydraulic disc brakes so how often is it suggested you change you DOT 4.

However, auto brake fluid is recommended to be changed every 5 years ,I believe. And they see way more use than any MTB.
But if your brakes start to feel sluggish or you find a dramatic change in the lever response then you need to service them – which typically will involve at least bleeding them. At that point you might just change the fluid completely. I would definitely check with the manufacturer of your specific brake set and see what is recommended by them.
